The popularity of bandura ensemble music is relatively recent. The first documented formation of a bandurist ensemble dates back to 1902 to an ensemble that performed at the XIIth Archeological Conference held in Kharkiv. The first semi-professional enemble was formed in 1918 in Kiev by Vasyl Yemetz. In the post war years the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus has done much to popularize the artform.
