Brno-Žebětín is a city district in Brno, Czech Republic, located on the western edge of the city. It consists of the municipal part and cadastral territory of Žebětín (German: Schebetein), originally an independent municipality that was annexed to Brno in 1971. It has an area of ​​13.60 km². The city district was established on November 24, 1990. About 6,000 people live here.

For the purposes of the senate elections, Brno-Žebětín is included in electoral district number 55 of Brno-City District.

Etymology

The name of the village was derived from the male personal name Žeběta, whose older form Žabata was derived from the name Žába, identical to the Czech word for 'frog'. The meaning of the local name was "Žeběta's property".

History

The oldest mention of the village of Žebětín dates from 1235 (Sebetin). From the Middle Ages until 1848, Žebětín was divided into 3 parts under different authorities, which then merged into one municipality. Žebětín was annexed to Brno on November 26, 1971. Then, until 1976, Žebětín with its entire territory formed an independent district with its own local national committee, which was first called Brno XVI-Žebětín, but as of May 1, 1972 was renamed Brno-Žebětín. From July 15, 1976 to November 23, 1990, Žebětín was part of the Brno II municipal district. In 1979, the cadastral border between Kohoutovice and Žebětín was changed due to the overlap of the newly built Kohoutovice housing estate on the Žebětín cadastral territory. Žebětín lost the eastern edge of its territory, which included, among other things, a grove, and on the other hand it acquired parcel number 2957 from Kohoutovice. On November 24, 1990, the Brno-Žebětín city district was established. On February 19, 2015, the new cadastral and administrative border between Žebětín and Bystrc in the locality of Kamechy entered into force.

Geography

Žebětín has three protected areas: Augšperský potok (stream), Pekárna forest, and Žebětínský rybník (Žebětín pond). In the forest to the east of Žebětín there is a memorial oak tree "Troják".

Transport

The connection with the city of Brno is provided by the Public Transport Company of the City of Brno using bus line 52 from Mendlovo náměstí, through Žebětín to Bystrc and back again. A circular drive through the Kamechy housing estate is provided by route 54. Part of the route of the unfinished extraterritorial highway Vienna - Wrocław planned by Nazi Germany passes through Žebětín, on the body of which a four-lane road to Bystrc was partially built here in the 1980s.

Sport

The most important sports club is the football club SK Žebětín. In addition to two adult teams, it also has several youth teams. Another important representative of the Žebětín sport is the Žebětín Pétanque Club (ŽEPEC), which organizes the tournament O žebákovu kouli every year, also starting the activities of the junior team since 2009.
