The battle of Bodrum[a] was a naval battle fought on 15 April 1774 at the Ottoman city of Bodrum. The Ottoman force was led by Kelleci Osman Pasha, whilst the Russian navy was commanded by Alexei Orlov. The battle was part of the Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774), and resulted in an Ottoman victory.[1]

Prelude

[edit]

Bodrum was attacked twice previously. Once between 10 and 11 August 1773,[2] and a few months before that;[3] both ended in Russian failures, and in both battles the Russian navy was commanded by Andrey Elmanov.[4]

Battle

[edit]

On 15 April 1774, Alexei Orlov bombarded Bodrum. However, he was repelled by the forces of Kelleci Osman Pasha. Before retreating, Orlov had lost 300 men.[1]
