Baltazar Kuncz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baltazar Kuncz (1580-1650, German: Balthasar Kuntz) was a Polish sculptor and wood carver of German ethnicity.

His father Johannes († 1588) was a carpenter (and wood carver), his mother's name was Barbara. The brothers Sebastian and Adalbert also became wood carvers. Balthasar probably did an apprenticeship with his father and then spent some time in Breslau.

Kuncz built and decorated altarpieces in Kraków.[1] An altar in the church of St. Mark (1618-1622), the altar in the church of the Holy Cross, and the altar of St. Anne in the Corpus Christi Basilica in Kazimierz are all attributed to him. He was part of the local artist guild, and is known to have had a workshop in Kleparz. From 1623 to 1642 Kuntz was a member of the Kleparz city council and mayor in 1630. He owned at least two houses in the town.
