Amjad Shawa is a Palestinian civil society leader and humanitarian advocate. He has been the Executive Director of the Palestinian Non-Governmental Organizations Network (PNGO) since 1999. Under his leadership, PNGO has worked to strengthen local NGOs, advocate for community needs, and improve life for the residents of Gaza amidst ongoing conflict and restrictions. Shawa is committed to empowering local leaders and localizing humanitarian aid to effectively address the unique and critical needs of Gaza’s population.[1]

Early Life and Education

Amjad Shawa was born and raised in Gaza, Palestine. He holds a BA in Business Administration and Marketing, an MA in American Studies, and a diploma in Teaching Deaf Children. Before his work in humanitarian advocacy, Shawa worked as a teacher for deaf children in Gaza from 1992 to 1999.[2]

Career

Shawa has been at the forefront of addressing humanitarian issues in Gaza. As the Director of PNGO, he has played a key role in coordinating aid efforts and advocating for lifting the blockade on Gaza, which has severely affected the availability of essential goods, such as food and medicine. He has criticized both Israeli policies and Hamas's control over aid distribution. His advocacy includes pushing for more international support for Gaza and addressing the needs of its citizens during times of crisis.[3]

Humanitarian Work

Throughout his career, Shawa has worked to strengthen civil society organizations in Gaza and has emphasized the importance of sustainable development, especially in addressing the challenges posed by overpopulation and fragile infrastructure. He has organized conferences and initiatives to address these issues and promote solutions that can help improve the quality of life for Gaza’s residents.[4]

Advocacy and International Work

Shawa has also called for international pressure on Israel to respect international law and lift the blockade. He has been an advocate for humanitarian organizations to have better access to Gaza’s population and has frequently highlighted the devastating impact of the blockade on food and medicine supply chains.[5]

Personal Life

Amjad Shawa's personal life is closely tied to his work in Gaza. He has devoted his life to advocating for human rights and humanitarian causes in his home country. He has also been involved in various initiatives aimed at improving the lives of disabled Palestinians, including his involvement in setting up the "Smile of Hope" camp in Deir al-Balah.[6]
