Amir Shurush (Hebrew: אמיר שורוש; born 9 July 1984) is an Israeli actor.
In 2021, he won the 'Best Actor – Comedy Series' award at the Awards of the Israeli Television Academy.[1]
He is known for his acting in the Israeli comedy show "Checkout" which aired on Kan 11,[2] and his satirical impressions of Mansour Abbas, Ayman Odeh and Yoseph Haddad in the Israeli comedy show "Eretz Nehederet" which aired on Channel 12 (Israel).
Early life
[edit]Shurush grew up in Eilat, Israel. He is the son of Anwar Shurush, an Arab Christian, and Meira Shurush, a Jew of Yemeni descent.[3] He grew up speaking Hebrew, and despite his accent does not speak fluent Arabic.[4]
He served in the Israel Defense Forces under the Kfir Brigade. Following his military service, Shurush enrolled in the Beit Zvi Performing Arts and Theater School in Ramat Gan, from which he had graduated in 2009.[5]
Before his acting success Shurush had worked as a waiter, bartender, cook, and even as a sailor on a ship in Eilat.[6]
Career
[edit]During his career in theater, Shurush performed in the Beit Lessin Theater, Orna Porat Children's Theater, and in the Israeli musical "Billy Schwartz" at the Haifa Theatre.
In 2010, he played in the satirical drama series 15 Minutes, which aired on Yes. He performed the role of 'Amir Dirar', a fictional Arab contestant in a reality show.
In 2011, he played the role of Rifat Dahlak, in the series Downtown Precinct which aired on the now-defunct Channel 10.
In 2014, he played in the series Temporarily Dead which aired on Hot 3.
In 2018, he played in series The Psychologist, and the comedy show Checkout, both of which aired on Kan 11.
Since 2020, Shurush has participated in the Israeli comedy series Eretz Nehederet, imitating the likes of:
- Ayman Odeh (chairman of Hadash and Joint List)
- Mansour Abbas (chairman of United Arab List)
- Ali Salam (mayor of Nazareth)
- Benaia Barabi (singer)
