Amir Akiva Segal (Hebrew: עמיר עקיבא סגל; born in 1980 in Tzippori) is a poet,[1][2] literary critic, and an Israeli sociologist.
Biography
[edit]Segal holds a BA in psychology and philosophy from the Hebrew University, and a master's degree in organizational development from the College of Management. He completed his doctoral studies in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on 2023 in the department of Sociology and studied transnational migration to Israel from North-America.
Amir Segal is married to Anya Zhuravel Segal,[3][4] they have three children and live in Jerusalem.
Literary activity
[edit]His poems have been published in several journals, "Iton 77", "Maayan", "Mita'am"[5][6] Shvo[7] and others
Produced and presented the radio program "Shirat Mecha'a" at "All for Peace"[8] radio station, dealing with Israeli protest songs and poetry.
Served as editor and host of series of evenings "Song of Pain" that dealt with protest songs at Beit Avi Chai in Jerusalem.[9]
Since 2010, serves as a literature critic at Israel Broadcasting Authority.
Since 2013, publishes a weekly poetry review column in the weekly Kav LaMoshav.[10] Segal was named "the most important poetry critic in Israel today" by Ilan Berkovich.[11]
Research in the field of migration
[edit]Segal is a researcher of immigration and globalization, completed his doctoral studies in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and studies immigration to Israel from North America as a transnational migration. A novel he wrote called "Shir al America" and published in 2017 by the Iton 77 publishers, dealt with the immigration experiences of an Israeli in the United States as well as insights into the nature of immigration. In the middle of 2023, he began serving as a research fellow at the Institute for Immigration and Social Integration at the Rupin Academic Center as well as serving as a lecturer at the Israeli branch of the International University of Economics and Business. In the same year, he published two articles based on his doctoral dissertation, one of which dealt with Israeli baseball and the influence of immigrants from the United States on the assimilation of the game in Israel[a]. The second one dealt with immigrants from the United States and Canada working in Israel as fundraisers [b].
Political activity
[edit]During his undergraduate studies Amir Segal chaired the Israeli Labor Party students organization at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Segal served as a member of the Board of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel.
Segal was deputy chairman of the junior faculty staff union at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba.
In June 2021 Segal was elected as a member of Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry Board – as the doctoral students representative.
