Alison Elizabeth Bennett is a British Liberal Democrat politician who has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Sussex since 2024.
Education
[edit]Bennett was privately educated at The King's School, Gloucester before graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1999 with a degree in social and political sciences.[1]
Political career
[edit]Bennett contested Arundel and South Downs for the Liberal Democrats at the 2019 general election, coming second to the Conservative candidate Andrew Griffith.[2]
She has served as a member of Mid Sussex District Council, representing the wards of Hurstpierpoint and Downs from 2019 to 2023 and Hurstpierpoint since 2023.[3][4] Bennett was the council's deputy leader when she was selected to stand in the 2024 general election.[5]
In the 2024 General Election, she was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Sussex with 21,136 votes (39.6%) and a majority of 6,662 over the second place Conservative candidate.[6] On 26 July 2024, she made her maiden speech in the House of Commons during a debate on "Making Britain a Clean Energy Superpower".[7]
Personal Life
[edit]Prior to her election, Bennett worked for British Airways and then E.ON.[8]
Bennett decided to enter politics following the election of Donald Trump in 2016.[9]
