Fatima Ainee Limbona-Sinsuat is a Filipina politician who currently serves as the Vice Governor of Maguindanao del Norte.[2][3] She was the last Vice Governor of Maguindanao prior to its dissolution into two provinces in 2022.[4]

Maguindanao del Norte governor

[edit]

Under an act of Congress, Sinsuat was expected to become the first Governor of Maguindanao del Norte, following Maguindanao plebiscite that split Maguindanao into two provinces.[5] However, the postponement of the plebiscite caused uncertainties regarding the leadership of the new province. The relevant provision of the Maguindanao del Norte charter that dictates the initial province officials presumed that the plebiscite would be held before the May 2022 national elections, but the division vote was postponed after that date.[6][7] This led to the Commission on Elections to come up with a legal opinion.[8][6] The position was issued on September 28, 2022, where the election body conclude that only the Department of the Interior and Local Government could appoint the first officials of the province.[7]

On October 13, 2022, Sinsuat assumed the position of governor of Maguindanao del Norte despite the national government's refusal to release funds due to the leadership dispute.[9][10] The Bangsamoro regional government refused to recognized her as governor taking note the "legal controversy" arising from postponing the plebiscite.[11]

On April 5, 2023, Sinsuat was designated as Officer in Charge (OIC) vice governor of Maguindanao del Norte by President Bongbong Marcos. Abdulraof Macacua was named OIC governor.[12] On April 28, 2023, President Bongbong Marcos reappointed Sinsuat as the full pledged vice governor of the Maguindanao del Norte together with other officials of the provincial government.[13]

On August 14, 2023, Sinsuat vacated her position as vice governor and revived her claim as the legitimate acting governor of Maguindanao del Norte once again citing a June Supreme Court ruling. Shariffudin Mastura also reassumed the position of acting vice governor.[14] The Bangsamoro regional government does not recognize Sinsuat's claim.[15]

  1. ^ Served as Officer in Charge from April 5, 2023 to April 28, 2023.
  2. ^ Maguindanao was abolished following the 2022 plebiscite on September 17, 2022, to divide it into Maguindanao del Sur and Maguindanao del Norte. However, Mariam Mangudadatu continued to exercise the gubernatorial position[1] until the officials for both provinces including the governor were to be determined.
