Ahmer Rasheed Bhatti
Ahmer Rasheed Bhatti is a Pakistani politician who has been a Member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab since 2024.
Biography
[edit]Bhatti was born on 15th March 1986 in Lahore, Pakistan. He received his early education from LACAS and secured straight As in A Levels. He got scholarship from the Western University the erstwhile University of Western Ontario (UWO) Canada. He received a degree of Business Management and Organisational Studies (BMOS) with a Specialisation in Finance and Administration.[1]
He was elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab as a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independent candidate from constituency PP-165 Lahore-XXI in the 2024 Pakistani general election.[2][3] He received 29,390 votes and defeated, a candidate of Pakistan Muslim League (N) who bagged 28,427 votes.[4]
After the election, he was arrested by police in connection with the May 9 riots. Criticism arose on social media regarding his arrest, as it occurred nine months after the riots. PTI supporters argued that his detention was aimed at coercing Bhatti into switching his allegiance to other political party.[2]
When presented to the court after his arrest, he was brought into the court with his head covered in a shopping bag which elicited a lot of criticism from human rights organisations across the world.
Bhatti was once again arrested on 5th October while peacefully protesting at Minar-e-Pakistan. He remained n jail for one month and was released after his bail from Lahore High Court.
Bhatti is member of several Standing Committees of Provincial Assembly Punjab such as Law Reforms and Delegated Legislation, Labour and Human Resource, Planning and Development, Advisory Committee on Parliamentary Development Unit and Ethics, Special Committee # 1.
Bhatti has been vocal about human rights and is an advocate of minority rights and rule of law. Recently, the Committee on Law Reforms and Delegated Legislation, took up a question raised by Bhatti in Punjab Assembly about the non constitution of Public Safety Commissions at the provincial as well as district levels despite the lapse of over two decades. The committee has unanimously decided that these commissions need to be established and directed the government to report on their establishment within a fortnight.
