He first established a successful village store, and eventually owned land and other businesses.[2] He was described as the paragon example of a burgher.[3]
Oster married Elisabetta Becker, with whom he had five children, Adam Oster Jr., Fredrich, Margarethe, Theresa and Elisabetta. One of his grandsons, Adam Rettinger (1902 - 1921) was killed when a plane crashed his fishing boat at Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan.[4]
