Abdul Hannan Masud (Bengali: আব্দুল হান্নান মাসউদ) is a Bangladeshi activist.[1][2][3] He is one of the coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Students Movement,[4][5] which led the Student–People's uprising led to the overthrowy of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.[6][7][8] Abdul Hannan Masud, as the chief organizer of Students Against Discrimination, has been instrumental in raising awareness about issues related to discrimination within educational institutions and countrywise. He has led various initiatives aimed at promoting inclusivity and equality, often organizing workshops, seminars, and events that bring attention to topics like racial, gender, and socioeconomic discrimination.[9] Through his leadership, Students Against Discrimination has successfully campaigned for policy changes in Bangladesh and some institutions of the country, advocating for fair treatment and representation of all students and general people. His work has garnered attention and support from other social justice groups and helped create more inclusive spaces in the new Bangladesh. [7] [10]

Early life and education

Abdul Hannan Masud was born in 1st January, 2000 in Hatiya Dwip , Noakhali . His father's name is Amirul Islam Mohammad Abdul Malek and his mother's is Ayesha Khatun Bilkis. Abdul Hannan Masud passed his SSC from Burirchar Ahmadia Madrasah and HSC from Tamirul Millat Kamil Madrasah. Masud studies BA in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at the University of Dhaka. [11]

Abdul Hannan Masud was one of the coordinators of a student movement; Anti-discrimination Students Movement, which opposed quotas in government jobs and evolved into a campaign to remove Prime Minister Hasina from power.[12] He served as the Finance Secretary and Joint General Secretary of the People's Right Council (গণ অধিকার পরিষদ ). He was one of the founding members of Democratic Student Force (গণতান্ত্রিক ছাত্রশক্তি) . Later on, Masud along with Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmud, Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, and others gained national recognition in mid-July 2024 when police detained several students of Dhaka University [13] as the protests became violent.[14][15] In the aftermath, on August 5, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country.[16] Abdul Hannan Masud stated that their goals weren't fully met, and following Hasina's resignation, the group aimed to "abolish fascist systems forever".[17] He and his organization called Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to lead an interim government.[18][19] He prefers moderate politics.[20][21][22]
