AVS Futebol SAD is a Portuguese association football club, currently playing in the Liga Portugal Betclic (the first tier of Portuguese football league system). They are based in the town of Vila das Aves, and they play in Estádio do CD Aves. Founded in 2023, the club results in the renaming of former UD Vilafranquense SAD after moving to Vila das Aves.[1]

History

[edit]

The club was founded on 5 May 2023 after UD Vilafranquense's SAD relocated from Vila Franca de Xira to Vila das Aves due to poor stadium conditions. Vilafranquense went to the AF Lisboa district championships while Vilafranquense SAD (now AVS) secured their spot in the 2023–24 Liga Portugal 2. The new club has no relation to the defunct Clube Desportivo das Aves or its phoenix club Clube Desportivo das Aves 1930 apart from the sharing of its infrastructures. This situation is similar to the Belenenses and B-SAD case which happened in 2018.[2]

In 2024–25 Primeira Liga, they made their debut in the top tier of Portuguese football for the first time by winning the playoff in Liga Portugal 2 after finishing third in their league. They secured their historic promotion to the top tier by defeating Portimonense.
