The 2024 Lethbridge-West provincial by-election is scheduled for 18 December 2024 following the resignation of New Democratic Party (NDP) member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta Shannon Phillips.[1]
Background
[edit]Shannon Phillips represented the constituency since 2015.[2][3] She resigned her seat in summer 2024 citing family reasons.[4] The new NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi repeatedly urged Premier Danielle Smith to call the by-election as both candidates have been selected since September.[5] Voting stations will be open on December 18 with official results announced on December 28.[6]
Candidates
[edit]The NDP candidate is Rob Miyashiro, who served on Lethbridge City Council from 2013 to 2021, contested Lethbridge-East in the 2023 Alberta general election.[7]
The United Conservative Party (UCP) candidate is Lethbridge city councillor John Middleton-Hope.[8] He is a former police officer and Lethbridge police chief.[9] He beat Erin Leclerc and Shauna Gruninger in the nomination race.[10]
Campaign
[edit]Issues in the by-election include healthcare[11], pensions and affordable housing.[12]
