Background
[edit]Background information
[edit]Austria Wien finished the 2013–14 season in fourth place[1] and failed to qualify for a spot in Europe.[2] The club would have gone into the Europa League if they had maintained third–place.[2] The Club received their licence on 30 April 2014.[3] Austria Wien signed Marco Meilinger,[4] Mario Leitgeb,[5] and Jens Stryger Larsen.[6] Rubin Okotie, Tamás Priskin, and Martin Harrer returned from loan spells.[7] However, Okotie eventually transferred to 1860 München.[8] Pascal Grünwald,[9] Marko Stanković,[10] Tomáš Jun,[10] Emir Dilaver,[7] Kaja Rogulj,[7] Lukas Rotpuller,[11] Thomas Murg,[12] and Philipp Hosiner[13] left the club. The clubstarted pre–season on 10 June.[14] They were without Heinz Lindner and Markus Suttner, who were still on vacation, and James Holland, who is on the squad for Australia at the FIFA World Cup, and Rubin Okotie, who was missing for "another reason."[14]
During the 2013–14 season, Nenad Bjelica was sacked as head coach.[15] Herbert Gager was named interim head coach.[15] However, he was sacked[16] after the season and didn't get the permanent job. The club wanted Adi Hütter to become head coach.[17] But he eventually was hired by Red Bull Salzburg to become their new head coach.[18] Then they had talks with Manfred Schmid about the vacant head coach's job.[19] However, 1. FC Köln refused to release him.[20] Köln had demanded a €400,000 transfer fee.[17] Gerald Baumgartner was announced as the new head coach on 27 May.[21] He received a two–year contract with an option year.[21] He had been head coach of St. Pölten.[21] Renato Gligoroski was named the assistant coach on 6 June.[22] He had been Baumgartner's assistant at St. Pölten.[22]
