The 2009 Espinar bus crash occurred in Espinar (near Cuzco), Peru, on 24 December 2009, when a bus rolled over the edge of a cliff, killing 41 and injuring 22.

The accident

[edit]

The bus had been transporting passengers between the provinces of Arequipa and Chumbivilcas in Southern Peru. While traveling a mountain road in the Andean Mountains along the Altoandiana highway, the bus veered off the road and plunged down a 200-metre ravine. The cause was believed to be a wet road due to heavy rains, technical failure, and speeding. 40 passengers were found dead, and 22 were injured, one fatally. 10 of the wounded were taken to a hospital in Espinar and 12 were taken to a hospital in Velille. One of the wounded later died in the hospital.[1]

Subsequent investigation

[edit]

According to an officer of the Peruvian police interviewed a few days after the accident, the bus was travelling on an alternative route to that typically taken by interprovincial buses, one that was poorly maintained. The officer also stated that the bus may have been set on fire by relatives of the deceased victims after the accident.[2] However, it was later discovered that the fire, which had burned 5 corpses of people trapped under the bus, had been started by the bus-owners using a blow-torch to remove part of the chassis where the chassis-number was in order to disguise the ownership of the bus, and removing the licence plates of the bus at the same time.[3]

The driver of the bus was arrested four months after the accident, following an investigation that found him responsible for the deaths of the passengers. The driver had fled after the crash, and the bus had been over-loaded.[4] The bus owners, Guapo Lindo, also lacked insurance for their vehicle, meaning that no compensation was paid to the families of the deceased.[3]
