Jamal Mohamed College is a Government-aided and self-financed institution founded in 1951 by M. Jamal Mohamed Sahib and N.M. Khajamian Rowther.[1] The college campus is located in Tiruchirappalli, India and is affiliated to Bharathidasan University. The Day session is for male students and the Evening session is for female students.

History

College Building Opening

The college was started in 1951 and it was affiliated to University of Madras. Later, Since 1982 it is affiliated to Bharathidasan University.[1] The college is administered by the Society of Jamal Mohamed College. It operates as a religious minority institution and spans 87 acres. The college was founded by M. Jamal Mohamed Sahib and N.M. Khajamian Rowther.

In 1963, the institution achieved postgraduate college status. It received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1972 under sections 2(F) and 12(B) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. In 1977, the University of Madras recommended it as one of ten "Lead colleges" within its jurisdiction.[citation needed]

The college received accreditation from the NAAC in 2002 and was granted autonomous status by UGC, New Delhi and Bharathidasan University in 2004–2005. In 2009, NAAC awarded it an A grade (second cycle) with a CGPA of 3.6 out of 4.0. The institution was designated as a "College with Potential for Excellence" (CPE) by the UGC in 2011 and 2016. In 2015, the college retained its A grade in NAAC's third accreditation cycle.[citation needed] According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the college ranked 59th among Indian colleges in 2024.[2]

The college received Three Star status from the Institutions Innovation Council (IIC), MHRD Innovation Cell, Government of India, in 2019. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) awarded its FIST Scheme to various departments, including Zoology, Botany, and Physics in 2004, Mathematics in 2008, and an extended scheme in 2019. In 2020, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) awarded the Star College Scheme to five science departments.[citation needed]

Over seven decades, the college has grown into a multi-faculty institution, offering 23 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate programs. Nineteen departments function as approved research centres, with an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. The teaching faculty includes 145 government-aided staff and 354 in the self-finance stream. The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1971, Golden Jubilee in 2001, and Diamond Jubilee in 2011. The college was able to become a multi-faculty institution with 11 UG programmes, 11 PG programmes and 2 M.Phil. Programmes under Government Aided stream and 11 U.G. programmes, 13 P.G. programmes, 17 M.Phil. and 16 Ph.D. programmes under self financing stream. The college also offers 13 U.G., 14 P.G. programmes, 16 M.Phil. and 15 Ph.D. programmes exclusively for women as part of women empowerment during the second shift of the college. During 2021–22, the college offers 23 Under Graduate, 20 Post Graduate, 7 UGC Sponsored Career-Oriented programmes, 17 M.Phil. and 16 Ph.D., programmes. The present student strength is around 12,000, of which 4605 are women students. There are about 494 Teaching and 297 Non-teaching staff.

  • During the academic year 2018-19, B.A. Arabic and B.Sc., Zoology for women and M.Phil., Social Work Programmes were started. The Affiliation was also granted for UGC sponsored B.Voc., Food Processing and Safety and B.Voc., Apparel and Fashion Design programme under NSQF.
  • During 2018-19, Innovation and Incubation Centre and Intellectual Property Rights Cell were established.
  • Our College was ranked as one of the Top hundred Colleges (59th rank) in the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2018-19 by MHRD, New Delhi.
  • The Department of Visual Communication took initiative to release a News Letter-Jamal Insider in 2018-19.
  • The government of Tamil Nadu identified our College to sanction infrastructure grants under RUSA Scheme.
  • DST sort listed our College to sanction FIST Level “O” grant under the PG Colleges for College as a whole
  • Under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Scheme (from IIT, Delhi), our College was granted permission to transform local communities through participating envisioning sustainable growth, healthy practices among the public and private sectors to make better India.
  • DST sanctioned FIST Level "O" grant of Rs. 1,10,00,000/- (Rupees One Crore and ten lakhs) for a period of 5 years to support financially 6 Departments of our College namely Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Computer Science in 2020.
  • Thiru Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Honble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, presented The New Indian Express "Think Edu Award" to our College on 9th January 2020 for our consistent efforts in providing quality education.
  • Five Science Departments such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology have been short-listed after a meritorious presentation, among many competing institutions and awarded the Star College Scheme by the Department of Bio-Technology (DBT) in 2020.
  • During the academic year 2020-2021, Our College was ranked as one of the Top hundred Colleges (65th rank) in the National Institutional Ranking Framework -2021 by MHRD, New Delhi.
  • The syllabus was revised with the introduction of Outcome Based Education for all UG, PG and M.Phil Programmes to be implemented from the academic year 2020-2021.
  • B.Voc Tourism and Hospitality Management and B.Voc Media Production were started during the academic year 2020-2021. Besides, Diploma programmes in Aquaculture, Horticulture and Insurance and Actuarial Science were also started for men students in this same academic year 2020-21 under UGC NSQF Scheme.
  • JMC Alumni Association Chapters were formed in UK, USA, Tenkasi, Kongunadu and were inaugurated through online in the academic year 2020-2021.
  • Global Alumni Job Search Engine exclusively for Jamalians was created with the support of the alumni spread all over the globe during the academic year 2020-2021.
  • Our college has secured 79th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022.
