Wikipedia:WikiProject WikipediaWikipedia:WikiProject Wikimedia – The topics covered by this WikiProject is not limited to Wikipedia itself, but also other topics of projects under the Wikimedia Foundation. The new name would more accurately describe this WikiProject. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 12:37, 28 July 2015 (UTC) Relisted. Jenks24 (talk) 12:55, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

I would prefer Wikimedia to Wikimedia Foundation as it is about more than just the work of WMF. --Varnent (talk)(COI) 17:20, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

Now that there is a new WikiProject at Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia, should the old WikiProject stay at Wikipedia:WikiProject Improving Wikipedia (as it is right now) or moved to some other title? Any input is welcome. CabbagePotato (talk) 02:25, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

I am fine with this changing names but it is attatched as a parameter to about 150 talk page templates that you have to change by hand and I am not going to take that up. I am already changing the templates from the move to here from wp:wp wikipedia and will not do so again. And I do oppose the if it is back to WP:WP Wikipedia as I have created a wikiproject there already that matches the name.Tortle (talk) 02:51, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

If there is consensus for a change, then somebody (or maybe even myself, if I have time) can move those pages. You don't have to move them yourself. CabbagePotato (talk) 02:55, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
Names of WikiProjects are really up to the actual participants, not the community at large. An RFC might not be entirely appropriate. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:06, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
@WhatamIdoing: I guess you're right; an RfC probably wasn't the best choice here. I just thought it might be confusing for some users to see WikiProject Wikipedia (the old one) moved to a new name after it became inactive, assuming it might have been better to leave it at "WikiProject Wikipedia" as a historical record. Since this WikiProject has already been moved, though, I suppose the best way to approach this now is to just leave it alone at the new title. If someone else wants the WikiProject to be moved, I guess it's up to them to decide. CabbagePotato (talk) 01:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

anon:registered editor ratio

Hello, I just came across an old study on anonymous edits from 2007 referenced in WP:IPHUMAN. It's pretty old and the sample set is small, so I was wondering if there are any more up to date statistics on the relative proportion of anon to registered editors for English Wikipedia? Thanks! Nomination of The Signpost (Wikipedia) for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article The Signpost (Wikipedia) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Signpost (Wikipedia) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. Deletion to Quality Award

I've created the WP:Deletion to Quality Award.

This recognizes editors who've taken a page previously considered for deletion — to Featured Article or Good Article quality.

The award is inspired by the Wikipedia:Million Award, the Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron, and the Wikipedia:WikiProject Quality Article Improvement.

Please see Wikipedia:Deletion to Quality Award.

Thank you,

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia/Archive 2/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Wikipedia.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Wikipedia, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia articles at PROD

Notifying the project, as the nominator didn't. Articles for several of the smaller Wikipedias have PROD tags on them as "not notable, no 3rd party source":

Also tagged by the same IP editor, but de-PRODded:

  • Mongolian Wikipedia - they tagged it then immediately removed the tag
  • Sundanese Wikipedia - Train2104 declined it with the note that "AFD was closed as redirect so return to redirect"
  • Xhosa Wikipedia - I removed the tag having found a published discussion of the experiences of non-Xhosa speakers' attempts to edit it.

Kumari Kandam & Lemuria

Hello,

I am NOT AT ALL VERSED with Wikipedia's processes & procedures )they always look TOO COMPLICATED to me..(plus, do NOT have the luxury of time to learn all of that) but, have just (accidentally) watched a FASCINATING episode of What on Earth (on Science cable TV channel) called: "Lethal Intelligence". This program deals EXCLUSIVELY with what satellites reveal about our EARTH what's (often, inaccessibly) hiding from our naked eyes/knowledge. In THIS episode, there have been irrefutable evidence suggesting that the above-referenced names are part of (a REAL-NOT MYTHICAL) LONG-LOST (SUNKEN!) CONTINENT...!!! THIS MUST be UPDATED & REFLECTED on Wikipedia. Thank you. AK63 (talk) 01:50, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

a sort of FYI for this project

A large number of wikipedians have in the last 10 year plus - self identified with philosophies, religions, apparatus used to edit wikipedia, and other strange and wonderful things in relation to their wikipedia identity. Have been including these into this project as they are like parts of wikipedia - not aligned with a particular project. It seems relevant, and have continued into the more gristy technical identifications as well. JarrahTree 10:33, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   11:02, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. María Sefidari's missing biography

Since this is WMF and Board related, I tried starting this discussion on Jimbo's talk page, but was redirected here by User:Iridescent. A couple of weeks ago, I created an article here for María Sefidari, the Chair of WMF's Board. She has articles on three other language wikis so I thought it was time for someone to start one here. It was speedy deleted as lacking notability. While I thought this was a bit insulting, I understood, since it was a very short stub. I have expanded it bit since then. I think it is ready to be put back into mainspace but it would probably benefit from someone fluent in Spanish to find other sources. It is at User:Bitter Oil/María Sefidari. Thanks. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

What is the best place to store alternate landing pages for offline use ?

Hello everyone,

I'm one of the folks at Kiwix, the offline Wikipedia reader, and one of the things we've been struggling with is the amount of clutter on the current landing page that does not fare well in a completely offline archive (starting with the Word/Image of the day (after a while they are not so much of the day than stale), or links to external projects that won't open, etc.).

The workaround we have is to create a simpler, leaner landing page as a user subpage There is a mild issue with the URL being displayed on top of the browser, but even though this is more a matter of looks than inconvenience I'd like to move this somewhere more generic (in French and Spanish it is an alternate page in meta. Currently on enwp wikipedia:offline is a redirect to wikipedia:offline sources, so I guess we could use this one but I wanted to ask for other people's opinion on the matter.

Another thing is that a team at Arizona State is working on a curated list to replace Wikipedia:Wikipedia for Schools which is getting really outdated. I am going to suggest they create a subpage of it so that it can easily be found. Any objection to that?

Thanks, and happy to answer any question if something above isn't clear. Cheers, The other Kiwix guy (talk) 16:29, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Draft bio

Hello! This is perhaps an odd request, but I'd like to invite editors to review a draft biography about, well, me! Draft:Jason Moore

The history of this page is a bit difficult to explain, but in short, now-blocked editors created two stubs with some inaccurate and unsourced details about me after CNN Business published an article focused in part on my Wikipedia work. In addition to the draft Talk page, editors may wish to review Draft talk:Jason Moore (writer) and this deletion discussion for more context. To address these issues, I've shared a draft replacement biography on the Talk page after the stub was moved into the draft space. I've been completely upfront about my conflict of interest and have avoided editing the entry directly. Instead, I've submitted requests and suggested text additions on the draft Talk page for others to review and implement appropriately.

I invite editors to review and improve the draft entry, or contribute to the notability discussion. I understand some editors have a strong aversion to COI influence. That's fine, healthy COI skepticism is a good thing, but I felt inclined to intervene given how this page was created. I've tried to help draft an accurate, complete, and neutral biography, based on Wikipeda-appropriate sourcing, but obviously I'm biased so I welcome others to polish further.

In addition to this post, I'm pinging all 21 of the registered editors who have edited Molly White (writer), which was created around the same time: @Czar, Jprg1966, TheresNoTime, Sdkb, X-Editor, TJMSmith, Valjean, Bilorv, Tbhotch, Dr.Swag Lord, Ph.d, Somers-all-the-time, Ser Amantio di Nicolao, Iamreallygoodatcheckers, Nick Number, WanderingWanda, Muboshgu, Newyorkbrad, Wbm1058, InedibleHulk, Danbloch, and Innisfree987: My apologies if you are uninterested, but I figured reaching out to select folks individually could be interpreted as "cherrypicking".

Again, I'd like to acknowledge my COI and invite (any and all!) editors to make improvements and/or contribute to Talk page discussions. I'm willing to address concerns on the Talk page. Please, there's no need to "shame" me for intervening here; I agree, my involvement is not ideal, but I felt a need to do something given the initial page creations. This hasn't exactly been a pleasant process, so try to cut me a little slack if possible. My goal all along has just been to help draft a quality entry about me if Wikipedia's going to have one. Thanks in advance to those who are willing to make improvements.

Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:44, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

That article looks great! X-Editor (talk) 20:45, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
I was about to accept this article at AfC, as I would had I encountered a draft with this sourcing on a different topic with a person I had never interacted with, but... the "Accept" button on the AFCH tool isn't working for me. (On two different browsers, never happened before. Will have to chase this up if it continues.) And I'm in two minds about whether I have a COI due to our past interactions but it's going to be hard to find an editor with no relationship to someone of Another Believer's prolificity. Anyway, it looks notable to me, and at least meets AfC's standard of a 50% chance of surviving AfD.
I think you've acted very professionally (or whatever the equivalent term for a volunteer is), Another Believer. The unpleasantness that poor actions by editors has caused you should be an opportunity for us all to reflect on the importance of BLP and the effects of our actions on living people. The sensitivity with which the subject matter is handled is as crucial to many other BLPs as it is here, though other subjects may fail to express themselves in ways that can be understood by Wikipedians. — Bilorv (talk) 21:44, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
@Bilorv might AFC issue be that the draft first needs retitling to avoid the Jason Moore dab page? In any case I agree it’s notable and I am relatively uninvolved here. As such I went through and made some BOLD cuts to deal with what I saw as some overinclusivity but I won’t take it personally if anyone thinks something should be added back. Sorry this has been a painful process @Another Believer; I agree with Bilorv that you’ve handled it admirably. Best, Innisfree987 (talk) 01:24, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
This shouldn't have been it: you can choose the new title in the AFCH script on the "Accept" button screen. Left a comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation#Draft:Jason Moore (writer); I'm increasingly convinced it's some problem with the templates on the page, rather than on my end. — Bilorv (talk) 08:02, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
Now accepted: Jason Moore (writer) (though there's talk page discussion over what disambiguator to use). — Bilorv (talk) 19:50, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 22:32, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Just a note that this WikiProject uses standard quality assessments, so it should be no action required and an "opt-in". — Bilorv (talk) 06:28, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Complete lead change requested in an RfC at Wikipedia

A total rewrite of the lead to replace the present lead is being discussed at the talk page of the Wikipedia page, which may interest readers of this project. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:51, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:58, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
The editor who insists on boldly redoing the lead is still reverting to his version. One main problem of the first sentence being a run-on has been solved. The RfC does not have the input I'd think such vast changes at the flagship article on Wikipedia deserves. The lead seems fine as is, with some tweaks, but the entire rewrite replacing it doesn't seem, in my opionion, to improve the page and its long-term language. Greetings - At WikiProject Wikipedia/Assessment, Requesting an assessment that section is quite long, and increasing in size. Time-wise it goes back to requests from 2022. Here are my questions:

  1. Is there any criteria for deleting old completed requests?
  2. Can 100-percent completed months be archived (or deleted)?
  3. Would it be Okay to make Year-Month sub-sections?

Over the last few months, I've added month dividers to help seperate requests, added Progress percent-complete, and added 🔶 symbol to mark past unanswered requests. I'm asking for help & discussion to improve the assessment request section. Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 01:37, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

@JoeNMLC: thanks for raising this. I'm really surprised to find a "Requesting an assessment" process for all Wikipedia articles (not those under the scope of WikiProject Wikipedia) at this title; perhaps it's to do with the historical origin of the assessment system. Maybe a move to something like Wikipedia:Requesting an assessment would modernise it. We can then set up a (modern) archive system by year.
Do you know where most traffic to this page comes from? I see it's linked at Wikipedia:Content assessment#FAQ. I wonder if it's worth advertising more specific assessment pages like Wikipedia:WikiProject Television/Assessment#Requesting an assessment (which I monitor) or Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Assessment (requests made through talk page banners). Or maybe trying to streamline and provide links between project pages where these features are actively used. — Bilorv (talk) 13:26, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
ω Awaiting - Any additional feedback? Or action to get this done? Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 15:00, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
