In the source, please change:

(writing <nowiki>[[User:Example]], {{u|Example}}, {{User|Example}}, {{user link|Example}}, {{ping|Example}}, {{Yo|Example}}, or {{reply to|Example}}</nowiki>)

to:

(writing <nowiki>[[User:Example]]</nowiki>, {{tlxi|u|Example}}, {{tlxi|User|Example}}, {{tlxi|user link|Example}}, {{tlxi|ping|Example}}, {{tlxi|Yo|Example}}, or {{tlxi|reply to|Example}})

so that the template names would be links in the rendered page. Thanks. 2A0D:6FC2:6A90:4D00:0:0:0:5F9 (talk) 20:22, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done. (I was looking for something else, but it was an easy enough edit, especially the way you presented it.) ^_^ —DocWatson42 (talk) 03:04, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to display more notifications than fifty (or to search them)?

[edit]

Greetings and felicitations. I'm looking for a (probably) pre-2017 notification. Is there a way to display more notifications than fifty at a time, or to search old notifications? I have a decent idea of what I am looking for, but not one for searching this page's archives (I browsed this page, and pages 7 and 8 of the archives, but as yet to no avail). —DocWatson42 (talk) 03:17, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DocWatson42 Unfortunately not. It's still 50 at a time, since your & I's last discussion about it at phab:T203632. And whilst there's interest in building a search (phab:T132804) it hasn't been done yet (and I suspect would be relatively high-effort?).
Tangentially, I'm reminded of "Zawinski's Law of Software Envelopment, also known as Zawinski's Law, states: Every program attempts to expand until it can read mail. Those programs which cannot so expand are replaced by ones which can." -- Which doesn't help you, but does hint at the explanation about why complex features like this don't exist in every tool!
I hope that helps a bit, if only to save you time digging through talkpage archives here. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 00:06, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, and I'm sorry that I forgot that I've brought it before—I'm glad you remembered. :-) —DocWatson42 (talk) 02:47, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Late followup: Just FYI, I didn't remember either! I outsource my memory to computers, hence my love for wikis! I only remembered after I searched for any existing related tasks, and found our old discussion there. :-) Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 00:22, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unsubscribed from a notification. How do I delete previous notifications from that talk page?

[edit]

I contributed to a talk page that had a huge amount of responses to a proposal in one section of that talk page. Then I subscribed. Then I started receiving dozens of notifications about that section of that page, so I unsubscribed from the notification.

I'm still left with about 30 notifications that I received during the time I subscribed. It's a lot of clutter that I don't need or want. Please advise. Thanks in advance. Ajk1962f (talk) 04:36, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please update documentation

[edit]

We just had an incident on enwiki where a user account did a minor edit to 600 user talk pages using AWB (automated editing). I think this issue could have been avoided if the documentation on this page mentioned that any edit by a non-bot to a user talk page truggers a notification. At the moment Help:Notifications#Messages_on_your_talk_page isn't clear to me. Commander Keane (talk) 08:41, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Design problem and possible bug

[edit]

Firstly, I had a quick look on Phabricator and didn't see anything and I won't be reporting anything on Phabricator. Getting a grip on the notification system is really difficult as you can't reproduce notifications, and I don't get that many to test for bugs/usability. Two issues I think I have found:

  1. Submenu disappears: when I get a new alert from commons while reading enwiki I get the red bell, but when I click on it I have to open the submenu "for other projects" to view the alert. If I accidentally dismiss the alert from commons, the submenu disappears and is iretrievable while on enwiki. In other words the submenu should always be visible at the top of the notifications list on every wiki. If I miss the initial alert, the only workaround is to visit every wiki and check for notifications.
  2. Notices on mobile don't show: when I get a mention the red bell alerts me right away. The only way I can see thanks is by switching to desktop mode. Seems to be broken.

I would like to add that the notification system is the best thing since sliced bread, it could just use some tweaks. Commander Keane (talk) 04:30, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding (1), if I see the "More notices from another wiki" box, I note down which wiki that is. Assume that it's Commons. I then switch to another tab, navigate to Commons, and click the notification icon there and deal with those messages that are specific to Commons - any "More notices from another wiki" boxes are left alone. Repeat for each different wiki. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:55, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I am glad someone reads this page! Your technique is good, I just got into trouble by clearing the cross-wiki notice (which is rather easy to do by accident, on a phone at least) before noting it down. I would like to see the "More notices from another wiki" box a permanent addition to the drop down (just shouting/summarising for developers, not aimed at you Redrose64). To be honest, for my use case, I would prefer a sequential listing of notices regardless of which wiki they came from (like the global watchlist). But I can appreciate others get more notices than me. I do wonder how many people miss cross-wiki notices because of this issue. Commander Keane (talk) 23:13, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
