Translation Project for Sources

[edit]

I previously asked this question on Talk:Records of Three Kingdoms, but I believe it is appropriate to pose the question here. As an English speaker with no knowledge of Chinese, I find it difficult to provide sources for information on Three Kingdoms articles sourced from appropriate sources. I am aware of the Zizhi Tongjian's partial translations available, but a translation of Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Han or Book of the Later Han would be of great aid if translated into English, allowing this WikiProject to be far more accessible to English speakers. Are there any movements within any of the Wikimedia divisions to attempt a complete translation of any or all of these works by the community? - Benjitheijneb (talk) 15:04, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Home Dubs did a translation of the annalistic sections of the Book of Han, published in two volumes in 1938 and 1944, but of course this only goes up to Wang Mang's interregnum and has very little bearing on WP:3K. Proper translation of long historiographical works takes an insane amount of person-hours. William Nienhauser has a group in UIUC that has been working on the Shi Ji for decades, and it is composed of legitimately accredited Chinese historians, philologists, and research assistants. Such an effort for wikisource would require the efforts of hundreds of editors or tens of thousands of dollars in funding. Benjitheijneb, I was once in the same boat as you. I majored in Chinese specifically due to the dearth of English-language translations of Chinese primary sources. There are no easy answers while machine translation of classical Chinese remains in its current stage of uselessness, except download and read everything by Rafe de Crespigny. Snuge purveyor (talk) 00:34, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for the reply. I have almost no hopes of learning Chinese in the near future - not even of Standard and Written Vernacular, let alone Classical - so I'll just have to make do with de Crespigny's works. However, I don't see why small translation efforts would be impossible; even if a few Chinese- and English-language translators could find time to translate a few choice biographies, it would be more beneficial than nought. If this were to be the case, as is usual with Wikitranslations, standardising could be achieved later. I'll put forward the idea on Wikisource community, and if that gets any response, I'll post it here if any of the WP:3K editors want to contribute.
On a separate point, I have several times seen the translations of the SGZ biographies on kongming.net - all of which can be found in the SGZ section of this page - being shot down as "unreliable". I am confused as to why this is; could any provide a reason why the translations cannot be considered reliable? Benjitheijneb (talk) 23:39, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
kongming.net the website itself is not an academic source. Though it's okay to refer to it to get some basic facts, they don't make it very clear whether they are talking about fiction or reality. _dk (talk) 23:47, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I quite agree that their "Comprehensive" biographies mix fact and fiction, but surely those biographies explicitly stated to be from the SGZ are acceptable as sources; especially since they are, after all, translations of a reliable primary source (the Records) rather than kongming.net's own tertiary source. To my memory, there aren't Wikipedia guidelines on what constitutes a reliable and unreliable translation, are there? Benjitheijneb (talk) 00:03, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If they are just translations from the Records, then I guess it's okay to cite it as Chen Shou's Records of the Three Kingdoms, and provide a link to the translation. Those with access to the original Chinese material (myself and others) can then check the information. _dk (talk) 09:50, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

TV series

Hi! I found a source describing a TV series based on Three Kingdoms.

Book - Campaigns of the Three Kingdoms

[edit]

Hi, everyone. I did this originally out of personal interest, but after learning that I can share it, I'd like to present to you my book - Campaigns of the Three Kingdoms. This is intended to provide information on the battles, sieges, conflicts or incidents of the era (and nothing else). If any of you are interested, you can find the book here. Enjoy. Benjitheijneb (talk) 13:48, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for sharing with us. User:Kamek98 also did something similar here. I previously created a sandbox page listing all the military conflicts in the Three Kingdoms period, but had it deleted when I discovered that people were indiscriminately copying from it (including mistakes I had deliberately made to serve as a deterrent measure against plagiarism). Lonelydarksky (暗無天日) contact me (聯絡) 14:42, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks LDS! Oh, and I enjoyed your compile of these articles Benjitheijneb. I'm currently ordering mine off the internet. Although I am doing editions since this project is far from done. Also, I'm doing another compile of each kingdom's biographies. --Eric - Contact me please. I prefer conversations started on my talk page if the subject is changed 17:24, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Assassination plots in the Three Kingdoms

[edit]

I'd like to bring a new article Assassination plots in the Three Kingdoms to the attention of all members in this Wikiproject. The page contains not only assassination plots (including fictional ones) mentioned in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but also loads of random information on the deaths of certain people. The article is also poorly written. Would anyone here like to do something about it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.255.1.172 (talk) 16:23, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've proposed a delete, as I don't think it fulfils notability guidelines at all and serves no use to the Wiki; the additional issues of poor writing and inaccuracy (as well as the fact that it does not distinguish between history and fact, despite the author's apparent intention for its use for fiction) are moot points in comparison, and alone would only require re-editing and re-writing segments. The discussion page is available here; if anybody is able to provide a reasonable argument for relevence, then I'll happily support a simple multiple issues tag, or at worst article incubation. Benjitheijneb (talk) 01:08, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Zhong Hui's Rebellion

[edit]

Hi, all. I'd like to raise the issue of the new article I wrote based on the article requests section, Zhong Hui's Rebellion. I don't think it's one of my worst article starts, all things considered, but there is a great deal I cannot do for it (for example, I only have Romance and a few small excerpts of Records translated into English, so the most I can do is check the historicity of involved officers, rather than detail their actual roles.) If anybody can spare some time to review and edit it as needed, please do. Thank you! Benjitheijneb (talk) 22:39, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: List of people of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms

[edit]

I saw a new article List of people of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in the see also section of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This resembles an older version of List of people of the Three Kingdoms dated February 2011. See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_people_of_the_Three_Kingdoms&oldid=416044813. Should it be nominated for deletion as well because it is a duplication of an existing page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.255.1.85 (talk) 09:58, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Haha... an example of Tattletale. I remembereed hi IP address 220.225.x.xx; (Gauge00 (talk) 14:01, 24 June 2012 (UTC))[reply]
Hey if you have any brain cells, visit List of people of the Three Kingdoms and List of people of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, do 'control + F' to search words. In the search box, type for example "Liu Bei", see the result. In the my pgage, you prompty can go to Liu Bei, however in the List of people of the Three Kingdoms, you have to wait many seconds to reach Liu Bei!!! How cumbersome the List of people of the Three Kingdoms page is!!! Your head 's brain could not configure out this yet. (Gauge00 (talk) 12:11, 29 June 2012 (UTC))[reply]
Hey 220.255.1.85: if you have any brain cells, don't listen to this abusive annoyance who clearly doesn't know how to not be a dick, how to treat IPs as humans, how to not lash out at people or even how to be a decent person. But clearly you do have brain cells, and hopefully you are level-headed enough to ignore his comments.
Gauge00 created the page as a retaliation towards the differentiation between List of people of the Three Kingdoms and List of fictional people of the Three Kingdoms and his views on the fictionalised characters of historical figures (eg. Cao Cao), as you can see on the talk page for his last article which was deleted. While this is arguably a violation of WP:POINT, I must admit that I do not know whether the notability guidelines would find Gauge00's list relevent or not - there may be reasonable academic use for a list of characters in the novel, as neither all historical figures nor all fictional characters are present. However, since you've raised the point, I'll create the AfD discussion page (some parts of the AfD process cannot be done by an IP), and the discussion can continue from there - that is, after all, the point of an AfD discussion. When I have created it, I will provide a link to the discussion page for you to comment. Benjitheijneb (talk) 20:03, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here it is. Please feel free to comment. If you have any further questions, please leave them on my talk page. Benjitheijneb (talk) 20:17, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see the page can be considered a content fork of the List of people of the Three Kingdoms and may be dealt with as such. Is there any valid justification for maintaining three lists and one main category of people of the Three Kingdoms the way we have currently? I myself don't think so, though I must note that the Chinese and Japanese Wikipedia both have a list for all RoTK characters and one for all historical personages of the period. And Gauge00 has done enough damage to himself that those willing can go directly to WP:ANI where things actually get done. _dk (talk) 20:48, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am very happy. That meat 220.255.1.85 does not seem to visit my page any more. In those good old days, that flesh used to propose AfD tags whenever he met my pages. (Gauge00 (talk) 06:23, 17 July 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Greetings to everyone here, thank you all for your responses. I really appreciate them. Now, I see that the AfD for List of people of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms has been closed with a consensus to merge the content into List of fictional people of the Three Kingdoms. I do not object to the result of the AfD. However, it's been more than a week since last Monday (9 July 2012, the date the AfD was closed), and I don't see any form of merging taking place. There is also no discussion about the merger at Talk:List of fictional people of the Three Kingdoms. The notice at the top of the page says: If you find that such action has not been taken promptly, please consider assisting in the merger instead of re-nominating the article for deletion. Looking at the page's edit history, it appears that our misguided fellow editor User:Gauge00 is still actively adding content to the list. I'm wondering, why don't you (User:Gauge00) channel your efforts into doing something more productive - stick to the result of the AfD and assist in the merger - instead of wasting your time and energy expanding List of people of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms? On a side note, I'm curious to know why people who do not make appearances in Romance of the Three Kingdoms (such as Qin Shi Huang and rulers in earlier dynasties) are listed as well. Once again, I thank you all for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.255.1.102 (talk) 02:19, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is really disgusting and vomitorious or gutt woozy to see that some inferior fellows are whining so many times in wiki, and now I was so astonished that I could see the childish actions in wiki. For some children, though rare, whining in front of his mother or her granny is the most efficient tatics to make them to change food dishes, to make add some more salt, to make bring them some toyes, or to make them buy icecreams, or to make them buy 1 million buck helicopter. Now he is whining to others that he did not know the some quesitons and it seems that he use the whining method to amke others to answer his personal question, why Qin Shi Huang should be exist?. Should I add some more salt on his trough to make his mouth calm down? If Benjitheijneb was in wiki, he surely promptly put something his feed trough, since he seems that he felt, boastingly and proudly, resposible on 3kingdoms as he was the man who created the his treasury, WikiProject Three Kingdoms. Really another woozy thing is that his mouth once said that it should be nominated for deletion as well because it is a duplication of an existing page.... Does he still think that the page is the duplication of a existing page?? Anyway the law of life of wiki, is this, if you don't like, don't visit that page. Probably the main reason that you dont like that page is that you are incompetant or prerequisite-deficient to understand that page. As if the one reason I dont like heavy methal, is that I could not understand the heavy metal. It is a problem of my music capabability, not the problem of the heavy metal itself. Therefore I do not whine about heavy metal. If your beak is small, please search the small grains, like those of millet or sorghum; never peck pumpkins or mellons as your beak was not designed to peck them. Similary dont whining about weather or today's temporature, or the national economy or the size of planet of Mars, cause they are too large grains. Though I understand your feeling; the feeling that you felt you could peck large grains whenever you put AfD tag on some pooryly written pages of wiki. Sometimes I got the news that someone was caught on street while doing the drunk test wielding forged police licence in the street. AfD tag was similar to the police ticket.(Gauge00 (talk) 05:30, 18 July 2012 (UTC))[reply]
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Making ad hominem remarks without directly addressing the issue - following the outcome of the AfD and focus on merging List of people of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms to List of fictional people of the Three Kingdoms - is not a good method of resolving your differences with other fellow editors. 220.255.1.28 (talk) 16:24, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, all. Only just re-entered the process. My original concern with a merge is that the "fictional people" list already distinguishes between Romance and non-Romance characters. Perhaps the issue is shared with everybody else? I'm happy to accept the result of a merge, I just want to know what's being merged, or what this merge involves; is that the problem everyone else faces? Benjitheijneb (talk) 23:20, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The answer is rather straightforward. We compare List of people of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms with List of fictional people of the Three Kingdoms and move from the former to the latter the names of characters that are missing from the latter. Of course, I don't see a point in including characters who do not even make appearances in the novel, like Qin Shi Huang, King Wu of Zhou, Liu Bang etc. I noticed that User:Gauge00 removed the AfD tag from the top of the page, but I've restored it. It's worth noting that he recently added not just the names of characters from the novel, but also the names of animals, and a list of battles. Is this not a violation of WP:NOT? 220.255.1.75 (talk) 14:02, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I can understand that, but the fictional list is almost entirely Romance characters anyway - the non-Romance characters are even in a different section. Of course, any fictional Romance characters not in the fictional list should be added to the latter, but I believe that most were there anyway; the Romance list includes fictional characters, but is mostly made up of historical characters as well (eg. the "Lu Bu related" list features only two fictional characters, Lu Lingqi and Diaochan - the rest are all historical, in the historical list).
So without trying to sound too offensive, I don't see what new information is offered in the Romance list to transfer to the fictional list. If I could, I would move it across immediately, but I unfortunately don't. Perhaps my comparison of the two lists has not been comprehensive enough; I hope you will be able to show me what it is that the Romance list has which the fictional lacks. As for the animal names, battle list and list of Chinese names, these are all irrelevent to the article and to its intention, and so I'd agree with you. I will delete that immediately, to leave solely the list of characters (as was the intention of the article in the first place.) Benjitheijneb (talk) 14:37, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
JUST FOR NOTE. Visit 2012_July_7 version of the list, figure out what the NEY tag on many names of the chinese names mean. (Gauge00 (talk) 23:05, 29 July 2012 (UTC))[reply]
The main reason why Benjitheijneb hates and deleted list of Chinese names of other page is simple. The reason is this. He can not read the chinese characters. Very simple childish actions. If you dont have PhD degree, one method that makes you feel good is advertising and emphasizing the uselessness of PhD. I think he did that kind of thing.(Gauge00 (talk) 05:01, 2 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]
Is it possible to start a second AfD? Since there's nothing worth salvaging from the Romance list, then there's no purpose in keeping it. But right now, the problem is that any person who lays a finger on it will incur the wrath of its creator. 220.255.1.37 (talk) 15:14, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When I voted for a merge, I was thinking mainly of the chapter citations from the novel as the information List of fictional people of the Three Kingdoms lacks. Snuge purveyor (talk) 23:14, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think now the Benjitheijneb is suffering some kind of mental illness now. One day his mouth spewed off words that eg. the "Lu Bu related" list features only two fictional characters, Lu Lingqi and Diaochan - the rest are all historical, in the historical list, if he has still have the brain that functions properly, should check whether or not 李封, 龐舒, 薛蘭 ,張超, 田氏, 昌豨, 吳敦 of Lu Bu related section exist in the List of people of the Three Kingdoms. It is really disgusting that someone that has contributes NOTHING to the List of people of the Three Kingdoms keeps to tell others what to do. Does he think that all thewiki users are his students in his elementary school? Now I have to figure out what the word demented really means.(Gauge00 (talk) 05:28, 2 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]
Words cannot describe just how laughable you are. Firstly, I have changed your quotes to stop calling me a "she" (I'm male), despite the fact that you have been addressing me as a male elsewhere; I can forgive your poor grasp on the English language, and I bitterly regret that this is not my only problem with you. Secondly, the fictional characters list does not list characters by faction, but by chapter of first appearance. That's why there's no "Lu Bu faction" list... BECAUSE IT'S NOT ORGANISED BY FACTION. And a list of Chinese surnames serves no purpose on a list of named characters, and you have not shown any reason why it should be present on the encyclopaedic article. I have no intention of harming your reputation (though you are managing very well to do that yourself); your self-proclaimed "PhD equivalent" means no more to me than the rest of the meaningless abusive drivel you spit out. I'd like to say I want your response... but I'd be lying. _dk,Snuge purveyor and 220.255.1.37, please continue to deal with this list without me; I have no patience or civility left to deal with this moron. Good luck, you three. Benjitheijneb (talk) 22:34, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Benjitheijneb, I believe every one of us here (except maybe one, who is obviously beyond the pale) has his own limits on how much nonsense and abuse he can tolerate. It is indeed tragic to see that when WP:CIVIL - one of the five fundamental principles of Wikipedia - is being so blatantly violated, very few members of the community actually bothered to intervene. However, I must commend you, Siafu and Snuge purveyor for your earlier attempts to resolve the problem on WP:WQA, even though the outcome was rather disappointing. 220.255.2.31 (talk) 02:07, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, 220.255.2.31, what is your opinion about the Qin Shi Huang (秦始皇) in the novel Romance of 3k? What is your poor opinion about the animal names,Red Hare Horse (赤兔馬)? Can you see that the red hare could be a good character of the novel of Romance of 3k? Visit 赤兎馬 and 名馬一覧. Anyway if you do not like the page of mine, dont visit it. What on earth you DO NOT stop visiting that page? It is disgusting to think that you two foolish people are eager to prove your incompetence. You two are obstable to making the page. Go away with your teacher benji the reverse. Is he your relative? (Gauge00 (talk) 02:32, 3 August 2012 (UTC))[reply]
I don't see anything wrong with visiting that page. If you don't like that page to be seen, then why did you even put it up in cyberspace in the first place? I believe you read the following line each time you clicked on "save page" - If you do not want your writing to be edited, used, and redistributed at will, then do not submit it here. Anyway, I hope you will spend some time doing self-reflection and become a better person by the time your block expires. Hurling abuse at others will not resolve problems. 220.255.1.57 (talk) 13:05, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly have never had to create a second AfD, so I'm not sure whether it's acceptable or not. However, if the consensus of Wikipedia editors found that it was worth merging, then I'll wait at least until August to see if anybody actually finds anything to merge. The wrath of the creator should not be of any concern to anyone; it certainly means nothing to me. Benjitheijneb (talk) 16:10, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think a second AFD is necessary. The decision has already been made, we only need to carry it out. If there is nothing of value to merge, then we can go ahead to redirect the page. _dk (talk) 08:34, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Let's visit User_talk:Deadkid_dk/Archive13#Lu_Su. French Wikipedia (Wikipédia?) Three Kingdoms

[edit]

Hello, everyone. At long last, I've made the jump to French Wikipedia as well (gotta practice my Babel Level 1 French somewhere!), and I've noticed that the Three Kingdoms (Trois Royaumes) pages on French Wikipedia are extraordinarily few and far between, and those that are tend to be lacking the detail of the English equivalents - for example, the summary on the page for the Romance of the Three Kingdoms ("Histoire des Trois Royaumes") is essentially copied from the French version of the Dynasty Warriors games, with only three quarters copied at that. With the dual aim of improving the French Wikipedia and improving my own French, I will be starting to work at these articles. I'm aware that even the English Three Kingdoms WikiProject is undermanned and thus in no position to start a French project, but if any of you happen to have any spare time and competency with French (the latter of which I myself lack), please try to drop by and neaten up or start an article or two (even if it ends up as a stub after your attention). Thank you! Benjitheijneb (talk) 22:27, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
PS. I will create a page in my user space on the French site to list articles in need of creation or attention (eg. cleanup, more information to be translated, correcting citations etc.); I will provide a link to this page on this talk page after I have created it. Benjitheijneb (talk) 22:38, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the personal project page on the French Wikipedia. It is in my user space, as I do not think it should be proposed as a WikiProject equivalent without sufficient support. If you would be willing to join, please feel free to add your names to the list (it's not a binding contract to help, simply a display of interest). Benjitheijneb (talk) 23:16, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My own knowledge of French is woefully inadequate (I've returned all knowledge learned from those compulsory French courses years ago back to the respective schools), so I can only wish you the best of luck in your endeavour :) _dk (talk) 10:18, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello all! I’m working with the Saylor foundation to create a series of original, crowd-sourced textbooks that will be openly licensed and freely available on the web and within Saylor’s free, self-paced courses at Saylor.org. We are using Wikibooks as a platform to host this project and hope to garner the interest of existing members of the Wikibooks and Wikipedia community, as well as bring in new members! We thought that some of your members may be interested in contributing to our book Saylor.org's Ancient Civilizations of the World. (talk)--Thomas Simpson (talk) 16:04, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FfD Notice

[edit]

I am unsure how much this project is involved with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (video game series), but File:ZhenJiart_DW5.jpg, a KOEI-produced artwork image of Lady Zhen (Zhen Ji) is currently at FfD on en.wiki & Commons. I however think it is an interesting piece of artwork, hopefully someone will be able to find a use for it. Salvidrim! 07:56, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unless the image is being used or put to use on a page related to Dynasty Warriors characters (or, less likely, on Lady Zhen's own page, though its use would be confined to the section concerning her appearance in popular culture), there is unfortunately no rationale for keeping it on the wiki. If someone thinks it appropriate to add the image to any of these pages, the FfD notice might be contested. But at present, this is not the case, and I cannot say I think such use is appropriate. Anyone else? Benjitheijneb (talk) 14:21, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone help me improving this article Tenbu (video game series) a little bit? Cheers. --Hydao (talk) 09:32, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced additions by IP users

[edit]

Hey guys, some of you may already know these incidents, but I'm still posting a message here for the benefit of those who are not aware of them. Starting last year (2012), there have been many anonymous IP users adding unsourced birth and death dates to articles on Three Kingdoms persons, especially for persons whose birth dates are stated as (unknown). Dates taken from works of fiction, the Koei games and anywhere else, except for historical sources (e.g. Records of the Three Kingdoms, Zizhi Tongjian, Rafe de Crespigny's works), are not acceptable because they are not historically attested.

Besides, these IP users also have a tendency to list out the family members of certain Three Kingdoms persons in full, including members of their extended families and so on. Although this is not wrong per se, I feel that it's very redundant to provide such superfluous details. Therefore, I've been attempting to limit these lists to only members of the persons' immediate families. Let's take the Sun family for example: The family section on Sun Jian's page already lists out his children, so it's unnecessary to list out siblings on the pages of Sun Ce, Sun Quan etc. I don't hope to see very long lists that do not serve any purpose other than to regurgitate what has already been included on other articles. An example would be this. (A very short article on Cao Jun suddenly became longer after a list of his siblings, directly copied from Cao Cao#Family, was added. This doesn't help to improve the article in any way.)

I'm somewhat convinced that these IP users are actually the same person editing from various IP accounts, due to the similarities in editing patterns and the pages they typically edit. Some of these IP addresses include:

I've posted messages on at least two of their talk pages (see here and here), warning them about their edits. However, it appears that either they have not received the messages or they ignored the warnings and persist in their edits.

Please help by reverting such unsourced or unnecessary changes if you spot any. Thank you. LDS contact me 05:39, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Leaflet for Wikiproject Three Kingdoms at Wikimania 2014

[edit]

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live!

[edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

[edit]

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

[edit]

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   11:02, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Project-independent quality assessments

[edit]

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
