Purpose

Why a feminist editathon?

From Wikipedia's page on its systemic bias:

The Wikipedia project strives for a neutral point of view in its coverage of subjects, but it is inhibited by systemic bias that perpetuates a bias against underrepresented cultures, topics and groups within society....[resulting] in an imbalanced coverage of subjects on Wikipedia.

With its global reach and circulation, Wikipedia is one of the current social experiments where people who care about making knowledge accessible to everyone can help disseminate information that is presently available only to a minute part of the world. The Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies committee at LaGuardia Community College would like you to become part of the Wikipedians who "mind the gap," by creating and expanding articles focusing on notable women and gender issues.

The event will be held at Computer Lab E106, E Building, LaGuardia Community College, on Wednesday, March 25 from 2:15 - 5:30.
If you haven't edited Wikipedia before, we will help you register for a new Wikipedia editing account.

Suggestions for entries to work on

• Gender Gap Red List and Women Redlinks: Two lists of biographical entries existing in various other reference works with no articles in Wikipedia.
• Women in Red and Gender Gap: Two lists of biographical articles to be created in the English Wikipedia by translating Wikipedia entries from other languages into English.
• Indigenous Women Redlinks: List of indigenous women who have either no article in the English Wikipedia or the article is not very extensive.
• WikiProject Feminism Open Tasks: List of articles and tasks related to feminist content on Wikipedia to create an expand.
• Women's History Article Request: A page to suggest articles about women which do not yet exist in Wikipedia, whose creation might be taken on by WikiProject Women's History.
• Gender-related Non-biographical topics: List of gender gap-related topics missing from Wikipedia.
• Female Philosophers: List of missing notable female philosophers.
• Women Scientists (to create) and Women Scientists (to improve): Two lists of women scientists to be created or expanded.
