Per discussion at WT:WSS: 54 stubs marked with {{Israel-artist-stub}} plus another 12 marked with {{Israel-painter-stub}} = a threshold-load of stubs for a new category. Speediable, too? Grutness...wha? 10:22, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

As below. I've been doing quite a bit of winnowing, and {{Sweden-painter-stub}} should now be on more than the requisite 60. I'm still looking, too, so that's likely to grow by a bit. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:23, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Should be speediable. I've eyeballed, and if there aren't 60 articles tagged with {{Denmark-painter-stub}}, it'll be a small matter to push them over the necessary amount shortly. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:21, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

For some reason, Category:Prehistoric bony fish stubs/{{paleo-bony-fish-stub}} was created before the non prehistoric category/tag set, Category:Bony fish stubs/{{bony-fish-stub}}. I think we should fix that by creating the latter - note that Category:Ray-finned fish stubs fits into it, as well as 166 stubs currently in the parent, Category:Fish stubs (many of these may fit into either the Ray-finned fish or the prehistoric category, I didn't check). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 11:32, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Along the lines of the catch-all categories we have for sports biographies (and, for that matter, with things like Category:Pre-1930 drama film stubs). There are some 55 articles loose in Category:Film stubs by decade, which is too few for separate 1900s and 1890s categories, but which could easily be brought up to threshold - a lot of films of this era seem to have been simply marked with silent-film-stub with no by-decade template. Some templates by decade already exist, but we could probably do with more (see below). Would solve the problem of these templates appearing in a maintenance "needs attention" category for being in a category which doesn't end in "stubs", too.
Extra templates which might be useful:
- {{1900s-comedy-film-stub}}
- {{1900s-Germany-film-stub}}
- {{1890s-film-stub}}
- {{1880s-film-stub}}

There are the best part of 100 New York City streets, roads, avenues and boulevards parcelled up in various NYC and NYstate categories. A single template that could put them all together somewhere useful would be a good idea IMO. Grutness...wha? 23:40, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

504 at the moment - not severely oversized but could stand paring. Tradition dictates separate tags for Scotland, England, Wales, etc., but I'm not sure that will help matters much. I'd suggest a by-century paring down, thus:
- {{UK-painter-18thC-stub}} - 100 articles, according to CatScan
- {{UK-painter-19thC-stub}} - 205 articles, according to CatScan
- {{UK-painter-20thC-stub}} - 149 articles, according to CatScan

Category:Roman Catholic Church stubs is oversized - a {{RC-document-stub}} / Category:Catholic Church document stubs (without the "Roman" - the parent is at Category:Documents of the Catholic Church would probably go a long way towards fixing things up - there are a dozen beginning with A alone! There are a lot of bulls and encyclicals in there... BTW, am I the only one a little nonplussed that we have Category:Roman Catholic Church stubs for Catholicism and Category:Roman Catholic church stubs for the actual buildings? It's a little confusing... mind you - the problem almost certainly lies with the permcats, where the terms "Roman Catholic", "Catholic" and "Catholicism" seem to be thoroughly mixed. Propose the following categories:
- Category:Paris RER stubs ({{ParisRER-metro-stub}} 78)
- Category:Ukrainian rapid transit stubs ({{Ukraine-metro-stub}} 17; {{Kiev-metro-stub}} 34; {{Kharkiv-metro-stub}} 20)
- Category:Spanish rapid transit stubs ({{Bilbao-metro-stub}} 30 ; {{Seville-metro-stub}} 27 ; {{Madrid-metro-stub}} 15)
- Category:Russian rapid transit stubs ({{Russia-metro-stub}} 20 ; {{SaintPetersburg-metro-stub}} 55)
- Category:Italian rapid transit stubs ({{Milan-metro-stub}} 45 ; {{Naples-metro-stub}} 11 ; {{Turin-metro-stub}} 7 ; {{Rome-metro-stub}} 36)
- Category:Brussels Metro stubs ({{Brussels-metro-stub}} 60)
- German rapid transit stubs
- Category:Stockholm Metro stubs ({{Stockholm-metro-stub}} 106)
This should tidy up the category nicely. My questions are:
- Should we create a France category to house Category:Paris RER stubs and Category:Paris Métro stubs?
- Should we create a country template for categories that don't have country templates (i.e. {{Italy-metro-stub}} and a possible {{France-metro-stub}}; {{Spain-metro-stub}} is already proposed below)?
SeveroTC 10:39, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, not to mention a Sweden category (for Category:Stockholm Metro stubs) and a Belgium category (for Category:Brussels Metro stubs).
- Definitely if there are any stubswhich should be tagged with them (that is, belong to the country but not to any of the cities with their own tags), probably not otherwise.
- עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 17:09, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm, can't say I see the point in a Sweden or Belgium category (or Norwegian for the existing Category:Oslo Metro stubs or Czech for Category:Prague Metro stubs) as there wouldn't be any other articles to go in them. Inoticed that some articles have ENGVARproblematic stub tags on them. For example, American Public Transportation Association (American English), has a stub tag which says "This article about transport is a stub" (transcluded from {{transport-stub}}). Since American English uses "transportation", not "transport", this is a problem. My solution is to do what was done with {{color-stub}} - make the main template accept parameters which allow for ENGVAR forks; create these fork templates at the ENGVAR-appropriate names (for example, {{transportation-stub}} - just like we have {{colour-stub}}); and then choose which template to use for each article based on the article and ENGVAR. Note that this won't affect any subsequent renaming of stub categories; this will just need to be done at the main stub tag page. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 06:49, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

I've proposed renaming this category at WP:SFD to either Category:Cooking utensil stubs or Category:Kitchenware stubs, the names of its two possible parents. Just templates for now, categories upon the size of the templates whether to go system based or country based:
- Belgium: {{Brussels-metro-stub}}

- Italy: {{Milan-metro-stub}}, {{Naples-metro-stub}}, {{Rome-metro-stub}} and {{Turin-metro-stub}}
- Russia: {{SaintPetersburg-metro-stub}} and {{Russia-metro-stub}} (lots of systems with potential for growth so a country-level template seems best)
- Spain: {{Barcelona-metro-stub}}, {{Bilbao-metro-stub}}, {{Madrid-metro-stub}}, {{Seville-metro-stub}} and
{{Valencia-metro-stub}} (small but completes the Spain set) - Sweden: {{Stockholm-metro-stub}}
- Ukraine: {{Kharkiv-metro-stub}} and {{Kiev-metro-stub}}

- {{Globularprotein-stub}} / Category:Globular protein stubs
- {{Scleroprotein-stub}} / Category:Scleroprotein stubs
Any thoughts? Grutness...wha? 01:13, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not very scienticsally minded either and I can't find perm cats for these so not to sure at the moment. Waacstats (talk) 13:43, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
- It's hard to type with a cat on your lap :) Yeah, I couldn't find permcats either (apart from the one on my lap)... but protein states that this is the main way that proteins are divided up. Perhaps someone with some knowledge of the area should see whether permcats are a good idea there. Unfortunately, chemistry is not my forte. Grutness...wha? 00:36, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

A slightly unusual way to split plants, but judging by the first page of the oversized Category:Western Australia stubs, this would be very useful indeed, taking some 700 of the 950 stubs in the category. And WA is a unique ecosystem within Australia, owing to the desert between it and the east. Grutness...wha? 10:14, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Currently stands at 539. Not over-oversized, but it's getting there, and I think it would be a good idea to try and get it under control. CatScan reveals the following, along the lines of Italian painter stubs:
- {{France-painter-17thC-stub}} - 65
- {{France-painter-18thC-stub}} - 150
CatScan is no longer cooperating, but there may be more viable; I'll check again later and add a note to that effect. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:13, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Having scratched the surface, I realised that there is a lot of undersorting here. So here's part one - the easy sports:
- {{Americanfootball-competition-stub}} (150) Category:American football competition stubs
- {{AFL-competition-stub}} (45) Category:Australian rules competition stubs
- {{Badminton-competition-stub}} (110) Category:Badminton competition stubs
- {{Basketball-competition-stub}} (175) Category:Basketball competition stubs
- {{Canadianfootball-competition-stub}} (90) Category:Canadian foootball competition stubs
- {{Cue-sports-competition-stub}} (35) Category:Cue sports competition stubs
- {{Darts-competition-stub}} (60) Category:Darts competition stubs
- {{Fencing-competition-stub}} (90)Category:Fencing competition stubs
- {{Fieldhockey-competition-stub}} (35) Category:Field hockey competition stubs
- {{Gymnastics-competition-stub}} (150) Category:Gymnastics competition stubs
- {{Rugbyleague-competition-stub}} (90) Category:Rugby league competition stubs
- {{Rugbyunion-competition-stub}} (220) Category:Rugby union competition stubs
- {{Softball-competition-stub}} (25) Category:Softball competition stubs
- {{Volleyball-competition-stub}} (160) Category:Volleyball competition stubs
Numbers are rounded from CatScan. Categories if 60-threshold is met and it doesn't decimate the parent category. If no category, upmerged to Category:Sports event stubs and the respective sport's stub category. SeveroTC 15:24, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

These took more than I thought they would so de-upmerging is possible:

I propose the following structure of mayor stubs:
- Category:Mayor stubs
- Category:Asian mayor stubs - upmerged by several national templates; scans by country give a total of 211 upmerged stubs, but the actual number here will probably be slightly smaller due to Category:Mayors of Jerusalem being double categorized
- Category:European mayor stubs - upmerged by several national templates; scans by country give a total of 452 stubs
- Category:British mayor stubs/{{UK-mayor-stub}} - Done
- Category:Dutch mayor stubs/{{Netherlands-mayor-stub}} - 87
- Category:French mayor stubs/{{France-mayor-stub}} - 79
- Category:German mayor stubs/{{Germany-mayor-stub}} - 81
- Category:Irish mayor stubs/{{Ireland-mayor-stub}} - 127
- Category:Norwegian mayor stubs/{{Norway-mayor-stub}} - 479 - already proposed
- Category:Slovenian mayor stubs/{{Slovenia-mayor-stub}} - 86
- Category:African mayor stubs - upmerged by several national templates; scans by country give a total of 92 stubs
- Category:North American mayor stubs - upmerged by several national templates; scans by country give a total of 70 stubs
- Category:American mayor stubs - Done
- Category:Canadian mayor stubs - Done
- Category:South American mayor stubs - upmerged by several national templates; scans by country give a total of 135 stubs
- Category:Australian mayor stubs - Done
- Category:Oceanian mayor stubs - populated, in addition to the subcat below, by the single {{Marshalls-mayor-stub}} (scan)
The totals for the upmerged national categories, as well as the sizes and stub tag names, can be seen at User:Od Mishehu/mayor stubs. All scans on that page are acurate as of when I made them; the numbers inthis proposal are updated now. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:30, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- Support - Oceanian (with an "e" ;) would also contain the Australian cat as another subcat. Grutness...wha? 11:43, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- I didn't ignore these. The French Polynesia one wasn't tagged as a stub when I did these scans; and neither of these permcats is directly in Category:Mayors by country (they're both in Category:Mayors of places in France), which is where I got my list of countries for this scan. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 12:05, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- FP is in "by country", and since French Guiana is too New Caledonia probably should be as well. We also usually do regard it as a separate entity from the point of view of stub sorting, and certainly link it into any Oceania cats. So it's almost certainly also worth having a template. Should I maybe group the Middle East in a sinlge subcat of Asia? Based on the scans I did, they should total 76. Given the 10 in Category:Mayors of Jerusalem, which is double-categorized in the Israelli and Palestinian categories, that would make it be more like 66 - and if a few were deleted or expanded, that's cutting it close to the 60 level. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:36, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Have just sorted through Category:Europe road stubs, the following have passed the 60 threshold and can now be de-upmerged:

Also propose two city-level templates to upmerge here (we already have a London one):
- {{Paris-road-stub}} (to France)
- {{Stockholm-road-stub}} (to Sweden)
The following country level templates should also prove useful:
The other European countries don't look worthwhile for templates at the moment.
One last one to think about: a split of Category:United Kingdom road stubs. If roads that are wholly within one constiuent country of the UK are split (i.e. leaving all roads that cross a border at {{UK-road-stub}}), we could make:
- {{England-road-stub}} +
Category:English road stubsCategory:England road stubs (152 articles) - {{Scotland-road-stub}} (29)
- {{Wales-road-stub}} (27)
I'm not so keen on these, as I don't think it's preferable to have articles marked with two of the above templates when the UK-level one will do. But it's out there to consider. (Northern Ireland, by the way, only picks up 8, but if we were to go with the others, we could do NI to complete the set.)

"Well George, I think we've knocked the bastard off." Victoria Land, with its 2000 stubs, neatly divides into three sections: the Scott Coast, the Borchgrevink Coast, and the Pennell Coast. Normally the Scott one would still be too big, but I've already proposed taking out the McMurdo Dry Valley stubs. So I'd like to propose:
- {{ScottCoast-geo-stub}} / Category:Scott Coast geography stubs (750 stubs plus one subcat)
- {{McMurdoDryValleys-geo-stub}} / Category:McMurdo Dry Valleys geography stubs (310 stubs - already proposed in Antarctica "fit the 8th")
- {{BorchgrevinkCoast-geo-stub}} / Category:Borchgrevink Coast geography stubs (320 stubs)
Theoretically, we could complete the set with {{PennellCoast-geo-stub}} to take the remaining 500 stubs, but the definition of the Pennell Coast's a bit more hazy - some sources just list the coastal area, others list the interior hinterland as well. In any case, that would drop the main Victoria Land category down to only a handful of stubs.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is just about it for Antarctica! Grutness...wha? 04:01, 1 August 2011 (UTC) (bows, waves at crowd, refuses any encores)
