About
[edit]The Berlin 11 Student and Early Stage Research Satellite Conference on November 18 in Berlin will feature a lightning talk and a workshop on the Signalling OA-ness project.
Abstract
[edit]References cited on Wikipedia or in scholarly publications come with several kinds of metadata but none of them consistently exposes whether a cited source is free to read or free to reuse. We want to change that by introducing a system that signals this information to Wikipedia readers and editors as well as to machines. This requires community discussion on what exactly should be signalled for what purposes under what conditions, along with technical development to gather, validate, store and display that information, or to build applications on top of it.
Workshop
[edit]In the workshop, participants will work develop an understanding of the issues around degrees of openness, how they can be signalled, for what purpose this might be useful, and how this all plays out in a Wikipedia context. They will also be gathering licensing information for references cited on a Wikipedia of their choice, and exposed to potential avenues for doing this automatically. More detailed information will be made available iteratively at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Open_Access/Signalling_OA-ness/Berlin_11 until the event.
