Welcome to WikiProject Oceania. Several Wikipedians have formed this collaboration resource and group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Oceania and the organization of information and articles on this topic. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list below.
Goals
[edit]This project seeks to create, improve, and maintain content relating to the broad topic of Oceania, including its people, history, geography, and cultures, in a neutral, cooperative manner.
Portal
[edit]Scope
[edit]- Oceania consists of the island groups of the Pacific Ocean.
- Some of the island groups have their own projects - this project is an overview of the component projects.
- WP:ASIA is a sister project in that it covers a large area and is basically an amalgam of a range of sub-regions.
- The specific scope of this project is the articles contained in the Category:Oceania and its various subcategories.
Details
[edit]- Oceania is a name used for varying groups of islands of the Pacific Ocean.
1.) In its narrow usage it refers to:
- Polynesia (including New Zealand and the Hawaiian Islands),
- Melanesia (including New Guinea and the Solomon Islands),
- Micronesia
2.) In a wider usage it includes Australia.
Not used in this project:
3.) It may also include the Malay archipelago, however this is a redundant usage/meaning.
4.) In uncommon usage it includes islands such as: Japan and the Aleutian Islands, but these are not included in this project.
- Continent: Although the islands of Oceania do not form part of a true continent, Oceania is sometimes associated with the continent of Australia for the purposes of dividing the whole world into continental groupings. As such, it is the smallest "continent" in area and the second smallest, after Antarctica, in population.

- John Carter (talk · contribs) - will try to work on getting together a list of articles in other reference sources on the topic as a basis for our own content, particular personal interests probably include the history and religious history of the region, including the largely "historical" religions
- SatuSuro (talk · contribs) - my enthusiasm is for project tags on talk pages - so that the articles and categories designated as being oceania actually are linked to the project and assessable
- Jason Rees (talk · contribs) - i am currently working on pages for several tropical cyclones that affect this region.10:31, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- MargaretRDonald (talk · contribs) I am looking to improve the coverage of plants in Malesia (although at the same time looking to improve plant coverage in Australia)
