Hi all, I didn't personally get the welcome from Spinboy (my brother did, who's the one who introduced me to wikipedia) but his introduction was actually more interesting so here I am... I am a psychiatry resident so that's one area of interest/expertise for me, the other would be int'l history and politics, especially arab-Israeli conflict... though taht area seems to be overloaded at this moment. djheart 02:25, 1 October 2005 (UTC) P.S. I seem to be unable to make my user hyperlinked, what's the trick?

Hi everyone! I've been using this site for a while now, (I think its awesome!) and decided it was time to see if I could help out. Im a recent graduate of Southampton University (UK) where I studied mathematics and astronomy. Am a complete programming novice but as long as you're reading this message I'm improving. Take care everyone, and keep learning!

Hey everyone. I've used the site for almost all of the information that I need for a long time, but it wasn't until today that I decided to become a member. I consider myself a nerd, a geek, or whichever term you prefer. I also find myself constantly watching the news, and I'm interested in geopolitics and government. I also like the military and most things having to do with it. I'm a Boy Scout and very much so enjoy Scouting activites. I like a lot of music, but I particularly enjoy rock, both modern and classic. I don't necessarily have a favorite band, but I do have more songs from The Who than any other group. I have, however, recently started listening to Andrew W.K. and Dropkick Murphys. I'm looking forward to becoming an active member of the site. Sam 23:20, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello to all. I'm jackmohr, living in Pennsylvania, enjoying life with my wife and two dogs. I dabble in children's literature and write for various literacy programs. I have taken an early retirement to write the 'Great American Novel' or somesuch nonsense. My avocation is health and fitness. I am not sure how I came to know Wikipedia, but have found it invaluable so far, and now find this forum. Bonus! Looking forward to many hours of interplay and exchange of ideas.

Hola!

[edit]

I've used Wikipedia for quite awhile now, and I'm eager to begin adding my own contributions to the site. I'm a technical student currently, majoring in Information Systems Security. Having used computers since the start of their major peak in our society, I like to think I know enough about them to hopefully add to the common knowledge and those seeking research materials. Hopefully, I'll be able to contribute something worthwhile in the near future :)

Greetings... This is one of the finest sites I have ever experienced on the internet. The concept is of orginal thought and motivation. This is what makes history. I will participate, admire, and find so much that will better my life and intellect. I hope I can contribute, as an engineer and psychologist of human nature that has traveled the world.

I've enjoyed reading Wikipedia for over a year before ever starting to wonder what arduous trials you would have to go through to start editing, but it was surprisingly simple. Although being exposed to some of the behind-the-scenes plumbing does detract from it's mystery glow. ;)

My userpage already lists something about my area of experience and Wikipedia interest (which seem to have little in common), and the larger edits I've made so far.

Genuine and Authentic Discordian Pope. So please treat him/her right.

To finish, I'm going to take this oppertunity to shamelessly promote a userbox I created:

I'm very curious and excited to experience Wikipedia at work. I'm interested in using Wiki technology for other websites, and I want to see where Wiki can benefit a site most and what probems to look out for. I'm convinced that Wikipedia is one of the leaders in the latest movement of the Information Revolution. It seems that one day all known information will be at humankind's fingertips. Wikipedia is definitely the beginning of that possiblity.

[edit]

I stumbled across Wikipedia by reading the article on Roddy McDowall (trying to find out just when he died; was surprised it was clear back in 1998). I decided to see what was written under "William the Conqueror" (my "specialty"); found a tiny spelling error; corrected it; didn't like the look of my IP address; created an account; corrected spelling in the tutorial as my first "MerlintheMad" contribution. I may do this more often, as it is fun for obsessive-compulsives!

I have an enduring and intense interest in medieval warfare and early medieval history; particularly the Norman Conquest up to the First Crusade. I have written extensively on the subject, and a few historical novels as well.

You can see more about me by going to [2]

I'd love to contribute to wikipedia articles, but I feel that there are already plenty of editors that are a lot more qualified than I am in any given subject; so if anyone can suggest other ways I can contribute it would be appreciated.

Remember way back, like, 3 years ago, there were all those crappy search engines like Infoseek and Excite? And then, along came Google, and "I googled it" became synonymous with Internet searching? Well, Wikipedia is fast becoming a second revolution--a unified place to find encyclopaedic knowledge, just as Google is a unified place to find webpages.

I've been using Wikipedia for a while, but just recently decided to contribute. I'm finishing up a physics degree in Sydney, and so most of my contributions are on science or Australian composers. My greatest achievement is the Clausius-Clapeyron relation article, which I wrote as practise while studying for a thermodynamics exam. My exams this semester are on shock waves, medical imaging, and particle physics, so you can expect my contributions to those articles!

Happy wikiing.

Amazing! Wikipedia is alive and evolving!

My first experience with Wikipedia was with an internet search. Then, I read about it in The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman. After I heard an interview with Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales with Bryan Lamb on C-SPAN's Q&A, I had to see it for myself.

I have many interests and just love to learn. I've been involved in higher education for 38 years, first in the classroom but more recently as an administrator. I love what I do!

Wikipedia seems like a great place to visit, and I look forward to learning much more.

I'm an artist, making mostly large temporary sculptures for special events, frequently in fabric. Over the years, in my small company, I made backpacking equipment, fairings for recumbent bicycles, cases for electronic equipment, and of course, the products that I still produce, orienteering equipment.

I found Wikipedia some time ago when searching for something on Google, and liked what I found so I bookmarked the site. After using it for a while I decided to join the team. Since my name is rather common and my brother refers to me as the Wookie (something to do with red hair and a bushy beard...), I tried that moniker and it worked. I'm in Sydney, Australia and have so far mostly worked on small additions to Australian info. I have interests in plants, birds, Australian places (I've noticed some gaps in NSW town entries which I might fill if someone doesn't do so first), trains and computers. Since I've owned a few oddball micros over the years (anyone remember the RCA 1802 Cosmac?), I also intend to add entries for them at some stage.

I enjoy the ancient world the best (actually that's all I've studied in detail to this point) but am sure to be contributing to several other areas of our past soon!

[edit]

Hello, I'm Holly. I just got a job doing internet research and I use the internet about 10-12 hours a day. And wikipedia is far and away the best overall research resource out there. I liked it so much that I decided to join. I don't really have time to write articles, but I fix corrections when I see them and make notes on Discussion pages about things that I think could be fixed. hdstubbs

Greets, Wikipeople! I'm currently living in Colorado Springs, Colorado (USA) and a graduate of the University of Colorado. My background is in hotel sales and marketing. I'm an avid reader on all kinds of topics, love to write and have a book on local history in progress.

My daily Wikipedia habit has grown along with the craving to expand new material (stamp out stubs!) in my favorite subjects: history of Colorado, biographies of the region's prominent capitalists, geography of the Rocky Mountains, space exploration, famous science fiction authors and film.

When my children ask me for help when doing schoolwork or a research project, my response is "let's Wiki it!"

The possibilities seem infinite. --Stu 05:18, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi... Im rebecca and I live in California. lol. I'm looking around this site and while I try to figure out how to do stuff I'm getting more confused. Anyway, I like video games and runescape( my username is "swimmerrds". The rds is my initials). I'm an overacheiver. I'm 15 years old and a sophomore. My birthday is May 23. Some people might call me wierd, but I prefer random, funny, and/or socially-challenged. I don't know how to change my site that tells my interests and stuff yet or how to talk/find other wiki-members(hint hint)... so cya on runescape (runescape=superfun rpg game aka most popular online java game in the world, not kidding look it up... Don't let the bad graphics deceive you) -wink- Becca 03:12, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello to all! Glad to be contributing to Wikipedia. I host the website at www.canadiansoldiers.com as well as running the website for my regiment, the Calgary Highlanders. I am amazed at what a great tool Wikipedia is becoming and it is very quickly replacing Google as a source of information for me. Anyway, not much else to say; looking forward to contributing content about the Calgary Highlanders and the Canadian Army in general, and would love to see some of you with similar interests participating at my web forum at http://www.network54.com/Forum/28173/ if you're so inclined. Teri Pettit

[edit]

Hi, I just joined so that I could add a few details to the page on Adobe Illustrator. Since I've been on the Illustrator engineering team since 1987, I have an insider's view there. My other interests include genealogy and collecting paper dolls. I may decide to contribute to the articles on the latter.

I haven't yet made a User Page. I wish there were some good templates for it to make it faster. (Not in the sense of an automated Wiki Template, just in the sense of a sample page with all the headers supplied so that you could fill in the details.) Probably I'll go find someone else's whose format I like and steal the layout.

Computers in Education

[edit]

I have searched Wikipedia for the important era when computers were introduced into schools, particularly in the UK, when I was National Information Officer for the Microelectronics Education Programme. I have written a short description about the Programme, but, having placed it on Wikipedia, cannot find it now. It may be that someone else has written on the subject and my piece is therefore redundant. If so, perhaps someone could point me to their piece, or find mine! Certainly I am keen to see more from those who remember the impact of teaching children about microprocessors, control technology and computers as information handling resources. 14:07, 29 October 2005 (UTC)MEPLYNN

Hello. I'm a curator with the National Park Service. I have a B.A. in American Studies and an M.A. in Art History. My areas of specialization are Gilded Age interior decoration, the Colonial Revival, and 18th century American Painting. So far, I've edited one article and created one article. The edited article seemed to work. But when I search for the article I created, the search engine does not find it. But I can find it through links, or by going to "my contributions." Any thoughts would be appreciated. I think this is great fun, and look forward to making many contributions.Bozart 20:11, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

LJ-38M - Greetings from Portugal

[edit]

Hi there! My name is João and I'm a Portuguese college student. I enjoy writing, learning foreign languages, playing video games, watching TV, cinema, listening to music, making music with my computer (I hope to become good at it someday :P )... I try for a little bit of everything. :)

My native language is Portuguese, of course, but I'm also good at English. Currently I'm also studying German, and someday I would love to learn Russian and Japanese, and maybe Latin as well.

I actually found Wikipedia through a search engine (think it was Google), when I was searching for stuff related to Valve's Half-Life game. I immediately realized that an encyclopaedia so detailed as to include information on computer games must be an immensely useful tool. So I began searching for other subjects such as mechanical forces, the Russian language, railguns... :P and finally found something that really is going to be useful for my college course and professional future: detailed info on the International Phonetic Alphabet. Thanks a million, guys; you have no idea how much this has been (and will be) useful. :D ;)

Then I found info on my mother language and decided I might be able to contribute a bit. But I'm still getting the feel of how the Wikipedia site works, and still have a few doubts. I'm familiar with online forums, but not with this kind of posting - it seems that the only way to post a reply is to edit what others have written. Where can I learn how to properly edit an article? It's kind of a lot to swallow in one sitting...

Thanks again, and best regards to everyone! :)

João

Relief Hill

[edit]

Finding Wikipedia is like finding Relief Hill. In my life, I have found both places which proves to be an exciting opportunity to knit the past with the future.

The "truth" is an amazing thing: We judge statements, recollections as either "true" or "false." Semanticists will describe the "degrees of truth" in any statement, that between any two mutually exclusive conditions there is a condition of truthfulness, thus making truth an ever elusive Holy Grail.

Neils Bohr gave us the Principle of Complementarity, Shrodinger gave us his cat. What I now offer is only that 'truth' in political science and history similarly resides in the same netherworld of memory, experience and argument.

I subscribe to an Aristotelian notion of 'absolute truth' which I am perfectly willing to admit that I cannot humanly perceive. That is not to say that I cannot make decisions based on 'truth' but only that critical analysis must be used in ascertaining where it may be at any given moment.

There was some truth at Relief Hill. Wikipedia also provides conditions for truth to exist, for that I am grateful.Relief Hill 23:45, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
