Wikipedia:Meetup/Adelaide/Meetup 23

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DATE: Friday 15 November 2024

TIME: 5.30–6.30 pm (confirmed)

VENUE: Seminar Room, The Joinery, 111 Franklin Street, Adelaide.

This will be an open meeting, and anyone with an interest in becoming an editor or media contributor to Wikipedia articles on SA topics, particularly natural history, conservation, terrestrial and marine parks, etc., is encouraged to attend.

I'll bring basic teabags, coffee, milk - nothing fancy, given uncertainties about numbers attending.

Kitchen, Wifi, whiteboard and a data projector available (HDMI connection required); and a chance to:

  • discuss the WikiCon Australia 2024 event to be held in Adelaide on 23 November 2024
  • find out more about the setting up of a GLAM collaboration between Wikimedia Australia and the South Australian Museum, and, possibly later, other local GLAM institutions
  • discuss means of recruitment / mentoring / training of new editors, and the possibility of holding more regular meetups
  • catch up on editing activity
  • discuss SA priorities and
  • learn what the Wikimedia Australia committee is up to.

Stay on for a meal if you can, across the road at The Franklin Hotel, 92 Franklin Street, Adelaide. We will order food around 6.30 pm and continue the conversation. Ask for the Wikipedia table when you arrive.

Discuss what you'd like to see in the world of Wikimedia in 2024 and beyond.

Questions/suggestions/comments

[edit]

To find and invite anyone who may possibly be interested in attending this Meetup, I've gone through the lists of editors listed as being active on WikiProject Adelaide and WikiProject South Australia, as well as those listed in Categories Wikipedians in Adelaide and Wikipedians in South Australia. I've looked at their contribution histories and excluded those who have been inactive or who have only made a couple of edits in the past few years (while still trying to be as inclusive as possible); or those whose interests are confined to very narrow topics such as railways, football or motorsport; or who have made only userpage vanity edits.

It's been more labour-intensive than doing a mass mailout, but it has the advantage of providing a quantitative result.

I find that I've posted invitations to 44 editors (and User:JarrahTree invited User:Pdfpdf before I got a chance to; let's hope that he can be persuaded to come out of retirement!), which is a surprising result, considering the low attendance at past local Meetups.

Given the diversity of interests amongst editors, trying to get organised as a local chapter is likely to be as challenging as the proverbial "trying to herd cats". But the present situation, where this month's AdelaideWikiCon is being supported by the SA Museum, with the possibility of our other SA GLAM institutions becoming involved later, does present the best opportunity for this to come about.

I'm going to extend the invitation off-wiki through my networks, as there may be some others who might be interested. Bahudhara (talk) 03:06, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A message about the meeting has been posted to the Friends of Parks & Nature facebook page. Bahudhara (talk) 02:05, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The facebook post was made on the 8th, but I haven't had any response so far, though there has been a bump in pageviews. I'm not surprised really - my impression is that facebook is a medium that suits people who want short, quick interactions. I'm not on the platform, nor are many people I know.
Friends of Parks & Nature also has a weekly emailed newsletter, which was sent out yesterday with an item about the Meetup - I think this is a better means of reaching those FoP&N members who may be possibly interested in becoming WP editors, given some encouragement and training. (With a membership of around 5,000, many of whom are highly educated retirees, I'm hopeful that there may be at least a few.) Of course it is very short notice - but we'll just have to see who turns up on the night. Bahudhara (talk) 05:56, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Car race

[edit]

Urgh. I just remembered that it's the car race this weekend. That is going to be a pain to navigate from my side of town, so just a reminder for those who may not know, in case it affects you. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:04, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Coincidentally, just happened across this InDaily article about the road closures. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:09, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My commiserations - living in the inner west on the other side of town, I'm not affected, apart from a bit of noise. But it may mean that free on-street parking near the venue, west of Morphett St, may be more difficult. Bahudhara (talk) 05:56, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
