This page is intended to coordinate Wikipedia related gatherings in South Africa. Wiki meetups are opportunities to bring potential volunteers into the Wikimedia community; to connect existing Wikipedia users to one another; to create situations where Wikipedia users can create and improve content on various Wikimedia projects; to create a setting where Wiki-related topics can be discussed; and to create a setting where attendees can exchange knowledge and experiences from their experiences that is Wikipedia. We seek to create/maintain a supportive local community of editors/users/volunteers/creators in a welcoming environment that meets, or exceeds, conduct expectations. Given that we are a diverse Country from various backgrounds, we hope that regardless of how one may be individually unique, that they may feel comfortable at one of our events.

Discord

[edit]

Discord is a freemium proprietary chat room program available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. A Discord server contains both text and voice channels used for real-time discussions and to share other forms of media between the members of that server. Discord is similar to WP:IRC in that it provides live chat capabilities with other Wikipedians.

The server can be reached through an invite link by clicking the Join Server button below. The link is periodically changed and may at times be disabled:

Any Questions about the South African Discord, please ask on User talk:TapticInfo

Purpose

[edit]

Gatherings of Wikipedia editors offer opportunities to socialize, discuss Wikipedia-related topics, and exchange knowledge and experiences from the universe that is Wikipedia. An edit-a-thon or workshop is a popular type of event that brings people together to edit Wikipedia in a shared space. These events often focus on improving coverage related to certain topics and are often organized in collaboration with a sponsoring organization or venue, such as a university, museum, or library. These events almost always offer training and support for new editors. If you are new to Wikipedia and want a little help getting started, consider joining us at a local event!
