I just nominated this image for deletion. I don't think we can have an article attacking an artist and illustrate it with a copyrighted example of his work. The artist, Jack Chick, is a narrow-minded bigot and I don't think it is possible for WP to have an article on him which is not negative in tone. Keep I really do not think this nomination is in bad faith, but I do think that Redddogg does not understand fair use or this website's image use policy. Our policy allows for the use of copyrighted images under fair use, as does US copyright law (the applicable law for this website). The image in question has a detailed, valid fair use rationale, and Redddogg has not made any arguments for why the rationale is invalid. He or she has also removed the image from the article repeatedly, referring to it as illegal, and considers any deeplinking to also be a violation of copyright law. This opinion has not been articulated by any US court. Copyright holders can prohibit deeplinking, but Chick Publications has not done so.
The article itself does not attack Chick. It is well-sourced as of today, and the bulk of the sources are statements Chick himself has made or statements from his official website. There is some sourced criticism, but Chick is a controversial figure and criticism is to be expected. - I disagree. Firstly, the subject of the article is an artist and is only notable because of his art and what he has done with it. An image of that art adds a level of understanding that cannot be reached without an image, and as all of the subject's work is under copyright there is no way to do this with a free image. This is precedent in the articles of other artists whose works are under copyright (see Jasper Johns, Georgia O'Keeffe Robert Crumb, and so on). Secondly, Chick's style is well known among both his supporters and detractors, and has been commented on by quite well known comic book artists (Robert Crumb, Art Speigelman, and so on). Some readers may be familiar with his work already, but for those who aren't a picture gives them the smallest introduction. We already link to Chick's site, where all of his in print tracts can be viewed for free, but as an encyclopedia we are supposed to be giving a full overview in our article.
