tim matheson

[edit]

tim matheson recently tweeted a xenophobic remark regarding the former first lady, and while he apologized for having done so, also on twitter, he then proceeded to tweet disparaging, xenophobic remarks about her. it is fact that this happened, and given hollywood's concern for protected classes, it is noteworthy and important to note matheson's remarks in this vein.

i entered the relevant information, provided a link to his tweets, not through a third party, and you've deleted them.

why? are you trying to hide his bigotry? are you protecting his abhorrent behavior? why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fulgey (talkcontribs) 01:44, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fulgey, see WP:TWITTER and WP:PROPORTION. Just because something is online does not mean it should be on WP, especially not in a WP:BLP. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 01:55, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also, don't make comments like this [1] in a WP-article, that's what the talkpage, in this case Talk:Tim Matheson, is for. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 02:00, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fulgey. What you did was original research, even if your source was public. Until a secondary source has taken note of something, it should not be mentioned in Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 12:00, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

it was all over secondary sources yesterday, and of course was admitted to by matheson himself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fulgey (talkcontribs) 16:34, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If it was all over secondary sources, then you should be able to cite a secondary source. Linking to the original tweet itself is not enough. JIP | Talk 16:49, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

i used a secondary source the first time i posted it, and you deleted it anyway.

you're cowards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fulgey (talkcontribs) 02:02, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello I want to ask how to put a comment on a file or follow a user or like the article but I have no idea I am on Wikipedia commons and I was impressed by a article I wanted to tell the user a good job but I had no idea why and I wanted to follow him like the follow on the social media apps like that follow button May you tell me how to do these thing on Wikipedia? --ScienceGirl-2011 (talk) 04:16, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We do not have either function here, as Wikipedia is not a form of social media, but rather an encyclopedia. --Orange Mike | Talk 05:08, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ScienceGirl-2011: So it looks like you have 3 questions:
1. How to put a comment on a file? Answer: If you want to add input to an article in Wikipedia, for instance you have a question or comment, then at the top of the page towards the left there should be a tab that says "Talk." Click on that and then edit just like you did here. For Wikimedia Commons, it's the same but the tab will say "Discussion" instead of "Talk."
2. How to follow a user? Like follow on social media? Answer: Wikipedia is not really social media, because the focus is the pages not the users. To follow a page in Wikipedia Commons, there is a star at the top next to "History" at the top right ("View History" in Wikipedia). Click that and it will give you the option to add a page to your watchlist, which you can access from the very top right using the link "Watchlist." Note that you'll have to go to each site, Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, to see each one's watchlist.
If you want to see what a particular user has added, go to that user's page and in the lefthand column there's a link that says "User Contributions" that will let you see what that user has done. You can follow a user's page by using the same steps as above, but it won't update you on contributions or anything.
3. How to tell a user good job? Answer: At the top right of every article page, there is a link called "View History" ("History" in Wikipedia Commons) which if you click will show a long list of edits to that page/article. Unless it is a bot (non-user) edit, there is a small link at the right that says "Thank." Click that and it will ask "Publicly send thanks?" Say yes, and you will send a thank-you notice to the user.
Hope this helps. The answers I gave are for the non-mobile version, so if you're on a phone the locations might be slightly different. Cheers, Fredlesaltique (talk) 05:13, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Adding to that, you can also go to the good-jobing users talkpage, and write a message there. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:27, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, ScienceGirl-2011. While I agree with what Fredlesaltique has said, I want to point out that the Talk page of an article is exclusively for discussing how the article may be improved, not for general discussion about the subject of the article. (Like most things in Wikipedia, the question of whether a particular comment is appropriate for the talk page or not may be a question of editorial discernment.) --ColinFine (talk) 12:04, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox fix reverted for being "unconstructive"

[edit]

I fixed the infobox on the Rampal page (the word "criminal" next to {{Infobox was removed by an earlier edit, breaking the whole infobox) and my edit was reverted immediately by another user for being "unconstructive", while I was just fixing the mistake the previous user made. How can I make the edit without being flagged as that? 186.134.94.210 (talk) 11:38, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, the reversion of your edit has already been itself undone and 'Infobox criminal' correctly restored. For future reference if your edit is reverted and you disagree you should discuss with the reverting editor per WP:BRD. Eagleash (talk) 12:35, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In this case the edit was clearly correct so you could just have repeated it with a more detailed edit summary to explain it, e.g. the above:
the word "criminal" next to {{Infobox was removed by an earlier edit, breaking the whole infobox
Thanks for fixing it and not giving up. I have posted to User talk:186.134.94.210 that the edit was constructive and correct so others can see it if you make more edits from this IP address. Vandals often insert derogative words like criminal in biographies for no reason, frequently giving a brief false claim like "fixed" in the edit summary. Our recent changes patrollers are busy and don't always have time to examine an edit properly. If there is a good edit summary then they are unlikely to revert without checking. Hi

[edit]

I just signed up to edit. I was wondering if it is possible to create a new posting that isn’t currently listed on Wiki? — Preceding unsigned comment added by CRKarch (talkcontribs) 16:09, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it is, otherwise we wouldn't have any articles. However, please read Help:Your first article first before trying to create a new article. Wikipedia can only accept articles what reliable, independent sources have covered. We are not here to promote anything or publish original research. JIP | Talk 16:18, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nookazon

[edit]

This article is definitely written as a press release and way to promote a aemi-obscure website. It was done with the intent of free advertising and does not represent any "cultural significance" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.243.77.233 (talk) 17:40, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nookazon looks well developed with lots of references. If you have concerns about it, you can start a discussion on that article's talk page. Or, if you are referring to a different article, please clarify. RudolfRed (talk) 17:53, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My RFC is not displaying correctly.

[edit]

I started an RFC here: Talk:2021 storming of the United States Capitol#RfC to gain consensus for a follow-on Wikipedia:RM. However, if you go to one of the CAT pages (for example here: Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Politics, government, and law) it displays as blank. I don’t get what is going on.Casprings (talk) 19:05, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Casprings, Where's your brief and neutral statement (and signature)? Adam9007 (talk) 19:17, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Adam9007, did not catch that I forgot to sign. However, I did so on my RFC. Still doesn’t display on the CAT pages.Casprings (talk) 19:32, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind. Got it figured out.Casprings (talk) 19:39, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Moving the reference point in a annotation

[edit]

Hi, I have a template containing an image that has some annotation (using annotation), however, I need to have the reference point of the annotation to be other than the top-left of the annotation. This could either be done by the template finding out the size of the annotation box, and then using to calculate the corrected point, or referring to either the centre or the right hand side of the box, as appropriate. I don’t know how to achieve my goal using either of these methods (or, perhaps, a third one that I’ve not thought of?) Any help would be gratefully received. How do I create a wikipedia

How do I create a wikipedia page for an upcoming artist? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Genoboy (talkcontribs) 20:16, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Genoboy: Please see the section above #Musical bio. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 20:24, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Picture on template

[edit]
Resolved

Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:05, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the picture on template:reading. When I look at the Reading article, I looks fine on my laptop but not on my iPhone while using the Wikipedia app. I only see part of the picture and need to click on the picture to see the full image. This was not the case before I changed the picture. I don't want to experiment with the template. Do you have a solution. John NH (talk) 21:41, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question about pinging

[edit]

I like to add my GAs/FAs/FLs to User:Aza24/User footer and I usually include the name of the person who did the GA review. Am I correct in thinking that having an extra colon, e.g. :User:Example, will prevent that user from being unnecessarily notified? Best - Aza24 (talk) 21:58, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that'll work. noping was designed for this purpose, though. Enterprisey (talk!) 22:06, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot to ping, so to demonstrate: User:Aza24 Enterprisey (talk!) 22:07, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Pings only work if the pinging code and the editor's signature are provided in the same edit, so I don't think it would ping them either way if you did that on your user page (as I assume that you wouldn't be adding your own signatures there). That being said, it's probably better to use np. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:41, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You're fine as long as you don't sign in the same edit or copy text with an old signature by you. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:53, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks all! Aza24 (talk) 23:16, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hello, I want to modify the links that appear in the "Languages" section on the left-side toolbar in an article. I used to do this by editing the article source and modifying or adding a template, now it appears that this information is not present on the article but rather in wikidata. I tried modifying this on wikidata but was unable to due to reasons that are specific to WikiData and I do not wish to resolve through wikidata.

The question is, can I override wikidata and link an article to another language by exclusively modifying the article source?

Thank you.--TZubiri (talk) 22:53, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you meant to edit the articles shown under "languages" panel on left side, you can add the article/language without leaving Wikipedia, but under the hood it uses Wikidata. You don't need to know much about Wikidata. If you want to wikilink inside the Wikipedia article itself, to an article from another language, you can do so as follows: :de:Helmut to get de:Helmut. See WP:INTERWIKI for more advanced topics. ~ Shushugah (talk) 23:03, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Are you trying to remove/change the link of Wikidata? That's not possible without entering Wikidata. What's the article you're trying to link to? I can do it for you. ~ Shushugah (talk) 23:07, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TZubiri, you can still use the old syntax for linking articles to other languages without using Wikidata; but it may confuse people, so there needs to be a good reason. See WP:ILL#Local links. --ColinFine (talk) 23:22, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! The reason here is that one language focuses on the product while another focuses on its production, wikidata is anal about the relationship being faithful, but the priority of wikipedia is about linking to good articles, so if Wiki A has a good article about a product and a lame article about its factory, while Wiki B has the opposite, then the articles should link to the good article, not to the most precise translation. The priorities of wikidata differ from those of the wiki.--TZubiri (talk) 23:41, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TZubiri: That sounds concerning. The interlanguage links should be to the exact same article in another language, regardless of the quality. Could you tell us which articles you're trying to modify?  Ganbaruby! (Say hi!) 00:16, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That will never happen, since no 2 articles are the same.--TZubiri (talk) 00:21, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
de:Helmut for instance would do this, but I'm not sure it's a wise idea at all. You may need to give us some context of which articles are the ones in question. We should only link to articles on the same subject, not because one is good quality. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:45, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

moving beyond draft

[edit]

I created the following page about a year ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Orr_Branch I was expecting that after a period of review it might make it beyond defat stage so it could be founding normal searches and linked more redials to other pages. It has been reviewed for at least one project (WikiProject Rivers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft_talk:Orr_Branch) but things haven't moved beyond this point. I suspect there's something I'm not doing, so I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Momolu Massaquoi

[edit]

I am trying to add my mother and uncle as children (last living) of Momolu Massaquoi and I seem to be running into a brick wall. Please give my step-by-step instructions. I have an account already.

Wokie Massaquoi-WicksWokie18 (talk) 23:25, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Wokie18: Here are my suggestions
 1. Please read Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide.
 2. Please note that Momolu Massaquoi has a section called "Notable descendants". Notability has a specific meaning on Wikipedia, so please read Wikipedia:Notability (people).
 3. Additions to Wikipedia require reliable sources, so please read Wikipedia:Reliable sources
 4. If your mother and uncle meet Wikipedia's definition of notability, and you have reliable sources to provide, you may make an edit request on the article's talk page Talk:Momulu Massaquoi. You may choose to use Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard for this.
Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 23:43, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
