FindMyPast

Find My Past (FMP) is a UK-based genealogical database containing a number of different records related to biographies. This database would be best used for verifying material related to peoples from the UK (though the database includes records from other countries as well, including a substantial amount of US and Canadian records). FMP offered the use of 50 one-year accounts to their database.

Original research and BLP cautions

Editors should be mindful that Wikipedia articles must not contain original research. Much of the information in the database is primary sources, thus should be assessed per Wikipedia:Identifying and using primary and secondary sources. 1. dirtyharry667 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I don't know how many edits or contributions I have, but I have been a member for many years. I have written several articles and have helped clean up several others. My primary interests have to do with corporate history and retail history. My most recent contributions were the August Wagner Breweries page and I am in the process of reworking the Gamble-Skogmo page. Having access to these data bases would be very helpful in nailing down acquisitions and mergers and their dates.dirtyharry667 (talk) 3:21, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
@Dirtyharry667: As I said on WP:BNA, you have obvious desire to make use of our resources. However, this resource, much like the BNA, is mostly UK centric and you have little to no edits in that field. Can you explain how you might make use of this resource if given access? Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 12:14, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@TLSuda: I don't know all the ins and outs of using these talk pages, but I think a UK-Centric database would be helpful since I write about business and corporate histories. For example, the article I have been working on was Gamble-Skogmo. The parent company was Wickes, which did have operations in the UK and EU. Likewise, Sears is leasing space to Primark, also a UK company. dirtyharry667 (talk) 12:14, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Dirtyharry667: I'm excited about your interest in our resources, but FindMyPast is generally for biographies of peoples, whereas you've stated that you're mostly working on business and corporate histories. If interested I'd recommend the use of WP:BNA as you've applied for, (just respond to my comment that you're still interested). That would be much more beneficial to you in your current work. Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 15:52, 11 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Harrias (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) My primary area of interest is late 19th and early 20th century cricketers, and this seems like it would be an invaluable resource for digging up information. Clearly, a lot of it probably won't be appropriate to use directly as a reference on WP, due to OR rules, but it would provide more terms to stick into search engines to find more appropriate sources, at the least. Harrias talk 13:37, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Harrias: Approved Expect and email from me shortly with further details. Cheers TLSuda (talk) 15:14, 8 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Gasheadsteve (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I would find this source useful for working on biographies of late 19th- and early 20th-century sportsmen. During Findmypast's recent free access weekend I used it as a source for the articles on Peter Roney and John Paul (footballer) and it would be good to be able to continue using it. I already have access to WP:BNA and I think that using both of these sources together would be a powerful tool for updating these biographies where information is difficult to find. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 12:26, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  4. X4n6 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I bolster, verify, create and occasionally AfD bios (and other articles). Of course, I could do much more in those areas - but especially in content creation, particularly regarding bios - with greater access. Thanks! X4n6 (talk) 00:03, 27 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  5. Clithering (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have joined the Chinese Wikipedia since 2006 where I have contributed nearly 40,000 edits. Over the past 10 years, I have been specialising in biographies of people from British colonial history. A vast majority of these people had roots in Britain. Free access to FindMyPast would allow me to search for official records on births, deaths and marriages, etc., which may not be completely covered or missed out by other sources including newspaper archives. These records would greatly improve the quality of relevant biographical entries in Wikipedia. Many thanks. --Clithering (talk) 18:06, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Iantheimp (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Hi i would like to be considered for the chance too use this site please, i have been using the BNA site (thanks to yourselves) and am currently working on football pages from 1892-93 and i feel Findmypast would help in my research of the players as there are many stubs or red named players that i would like to expand or start. Thank you for your time. Iantheimp (talk) 11:17, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Renewal requests

[edit]
  1. AnemoneProjectors (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) This has proven to be a very useful tool over the last year, so I would like to request a renewal. anemoneprojectors 09:11, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Eddaido (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Please may I have a renewal. Access is not always easy to them but often the old newspapers are a great deal of help and so are the censuses to identify family relationships for brief biographical sketches within articles. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 12:26, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Keri (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Yes please. My expiry date approaches (29 August 2016) Keri (talk) 13:12, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Apwoolrich (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) My expiry date is 29 August. Can I renew, please? I have found it a very useful tool for biographical articles such as Frank Mercer. Kind regards. Apwoolrich (talk) 06:10, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Elinor.Dashwood (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Please may my account be renewed. I have some grand plans for the forthcoming year on continuing my work on British ballet dancers and editing peerage articles which FindMyPast has been very useful for - both census records and newspaper articles. Thank you. --Elinor.Dashwood (talk) 09:07, 31 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Waynejayes (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I would be very grateful if my account is renewed. I use Findmypast frequently for biographical articles I create and edit. I have fiund it very helpful, I am always careful to say where I got the information. Wayne Jayes (talk) 07:15, 2 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Mattgirling (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I'd be incredibly grateful to have my account renewed. I have found the service indispensable for my work on historical and biographical articles. matt (talk) 08:34, 30 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
