Wikipedia:Citation expander

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Wikipedia:Expand citations)
This adds a button (the exact appearance may differ) to trigger Citation bot from the edit window! This button will work even if the bot is blocked.
It also adds an "Expand citations" link in your toolbar!

These are only two of the many ways to activate the bot.

You can enable the Citation expander gadget in the gadgets tab of your preferences panel in two easy steps

  1. Go to the "Editing" section of that tab
  2. Check the box labelled "Citation expander: automatically expand and format citations using Citation bot"

The gadget will add missing data to citations using citation templates, and makes corrections to their formatting using the logic of Citation bot. The tool is activated on whichever page you are viewing, via one of two methods:

  1. If you are editing a page, a Citations button underneath the edit box will expand any citations within the edit box. This means that:
    • You can check that existing citations have been expanded accurately and to your liking, allowing you to make further changes to the article before saving, and
    • You can type a partial citation into an article, such as
      • {{cite journal |doi=10.1000/ABC123}}
      • {{cite book |isbn=978-1-23-456789-0}}
      • {{cite web |url=https://example.com}}
    then have the bot expand this to a complete citation (sometimes only partially complete) before you save the page.
  2. If you are viewing the page, you can click on the "Expand citations" link in the "tool" section of your left sidebar to expand and format any citations in the page.

For more information about Citation bot, see its user page or the user guide. To report bugs and suggestions to the bot, go to its talk page.

For information about the gadget, see its source code. To report bugs and suggestions to the script, go to its talk page.

When used on a "new section", the gadget's edit summary is added to the section heading - you will need to fix that by hand.

Generally, NoScript will break this.
