This page in a nutshell: One is strongly advised against hatting or archiving a thread with ongoing discussion and instead letting the discussion come to its natural conclusion. |
At times there may be a desire to hat[1] or archive discussion threads in an attempt to reduce drama or move along the issue to a conclusion. While admirable, this almost always induces and increases drama due to users who are actively involved in the discussion suddenly being cut off. This may raise claims of closing the thread in the middle of the conversation, closing the thread against consensus and possibly spawning additional discussion on various administrative noticeboards. One is strongly advised against hatting or archiving a thread with ongoing discussion and instead letting the discussion come to its natural conclusion.
