Discussion
[edit]- Comment: Is there a discussion showing consensus for this sort of mass bot editing? I know that there is some dissatisfaction with the automatically numbered references generated by some editing tools. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:24, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
- Needs wider discussion. It has been many years since the last discussion I've seen, but in the past the idea of having a bot combining duplicate references has been surprisingly controversial. I think it would be best to (1) have a clear description as to how exactly the bot will work, including how it will derive the names for the references it combines, and (2) have a discussion (probably at WP:VPR) showing that people now support the idea. - AWB does this automatically anyways as part of its fixes. Gonnym (talk) 11:28, 2 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
- @Dušan Kreheľ: This isn't going to end up with approval at this stage without wider discussion (unless that's happened and you can link us it); if it hasn't happened already, please do start a wider discussion at WP:VPR and come back here if it demonstrates community support for this proposed task. If you need help, I'd be happy to help craft the question. --TheSandDoctor Talk 17:14, 3 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
At this point I am going to mark it Denied. because wider discussion and consensus is required. That said, ping me or drop me a note if that is acquired and we can easily re-open this listing. Given the vast number of pages involved and AWB's rules, the fact that it is included as a standard fix holds little weight in my view; this would be an appropriate task for a bot, provided consensus was reached first. --TheSandDoctor Talk 17:19, 3 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
