Request for a review of a block
Hello, Yunshui. I have recently taken the unusual step of blocking an administrator for what I regard as abuse of the admin tools. That administrator has appealed to me to unblock, and I have declined the request. I wonder if you would be willing to look at it, and see what you think. If you would prefer not to, let me know, and I will ask another administrator. If you are willing to have a look, you can read all about it at User talk:Joy. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 13:12, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'll take a look (I've just had a cursory read-through) but I'm going offline in about half an hour (during which time I have some other stuff that needs doing) and there seems to be a lot to wade through. If I don't think I can offer a satisfactory resolution by then, I'll let you know. Yunshui 雲水 14:20, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for at least being willing to look at it. However, I have to go offline myself now. I may just possibly get a chance to come back very briefly in a few hours, but other than that it will be about 16 hours before I will be able to to edit again, so whether you can do it within half an hour or not makes no difference to me. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 14:27, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for dealing with this. You handled it very well, as I expected you would, which is why I chose you to ask for help. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 08:42, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

- Hi. The problem is that the text on the website - which as far as I can see predates the addition of the same text to Wikipedia - is clearly labelled as © Auctions Online Scandinavia AB. That makes it effectively unusable here. If you can supply evidence of your authorship (the easiest way to do this is to send an email from an address associated with the website to permissions-en@wikimedia.org) and release it under an appropriate licence (see this declaration for appropriate wording) then we can use the matarial here. However, as long as another website holds the copyright to a piece of text, Wikipedia cannot make use of it. Yunshui 雲水 14:56, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Sockpuppetry?
I believe the extremely disruptive and prolific User:Duane E. Tressler is back, using User:169.156.4.28 as apparent cover in an attempt to avoid scrutiny of his edits (point three of the sockpuppetry definition at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/SPI/Guidance#Examples_of_forbidden_uses_of_multiple_accounts_or_meat-puppetry). Background: You blocked him for a month back in January of this year (when he created this additional account). He appears to be up to his old tricks again, leaving unfixed edits behind in his wake, which include: broken brackets; bad grammar and punctuation; over-detailed content transfers/additions; non-sourced fluff; and POV opinion. I thought you should know. Regards, GenQuest "Talk to Me" 00:40, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
I don't think check-user pixie dust is needed for thisLooks like a duck to me @GenQuest: LorChat 00:59, 11 June 2014 (UTC)- And Reported at WP:SPI @GenQuest: LorChat 03:23, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- I don't think this is the sockpuppetry case you think it is, guys. With the exception of a single edit (which doesn't fit Duane's pattern of editing at all, and so was probably someone else on the same IP), 169.156.4.28 did not make any edits at all during the week (not month) that Duane was blocked in January. There's been minimal crossover between the two (they have only three articles in common, and on only one of these are the edits even vaguely close together temporally). I don't disagree that this IP is probably Duane, but editing whilst logged out is not the same as creating a new account - whilst sockpuppetry does cover editing whilst logged out to avoid detection, my gut feeling (given this user's general slapdash approach) is simply that Duane hasn't bothered to log in for some of his editing - I don't see any malice in him doing this.
- I will undertake a review of his editing under both the IP and the account to determine whether a new block is warranted (or at the very least a warning), but I don't believe this would qualify as sockpuppetry. Yunshui 雲水 10:11, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Your unblock of User:80.193.191.143
Please, please, please reblock him/her/it! Not only has this individual started trolling User talk:Ruslik0, but his edits to Marc Lépine were so over-the-top disgusting that he should never have been unblocked! Categorising Lépine as a "critic of feminism" is no better than categorising Adolf Hitler as a "critic of Zionism". —Wasell(T) 17:57, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- BTW: Why are you changing the date in peoples' signatures like this? —Wasell(T) 18:02, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- I genuinely don't see those comments as trolling - it looks to me as though he has a legitimate belief in his position. It also appears that he's misunderstood Ruslik0's objection to the category - it seems he believes that Ruslik0 thinks Category:Critics of feminism is equivalent to Category:Feminist writers, which Ruslik0 obvioulsy doesn't. The misunderstanding seems to stem from the IP editor having a much broader interpretation of the term "critic" than is normally the case. I think he's wrong, but that doesn't mean I'm going to block him for having a different point of view to me.
- "Over-the-top disgusting" might be your interpretation of the edits, but I think he was sincerely trying to make an improvement. I also note that neither you nor Ruslik0 have made any attempt to explain to this user why you disagree with his edits, nor why they are inappropriate. That needs to be done first, prior to any calls for blocks or sanctions.
- The signature thing's a bit odd - that unblock request was actually made at 9.33, not 8.33. The timestamp in the copy-pasted unblock decline was therefore 9.33, rather than 8.33, but I don't know why it showed up as 8.33 in the live version of the request. Yunshui 雲水 07:19, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

OA for Writing Class?
Hi Y unshui! I am looking for two online ambassadors to help with a course I'm teaching in the Education program. More specifically, I'm hoping to find a few ambassadors who can review student proposals for possible edits and sources from July 25th to July 30 and then review article drafts from July 30 to August 11. I'm working on putting the full schedule up on the course page but those would be the main duties of the ambassadors involved. Think you'd be interested? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Matthewvetter (talk • contribs) 20:44, June 28, 2014
- Looks interesting - what sort of class size are you expecting? I'd certainly be up for doing four or five such reviews, but if it's a group of thirty or so students then I fear the workload would be somewhat beyond my capacity - I've got a fair amount of real life stuff going on during that period. Yunshui 雲水 07:32, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
The class is capped at 20 and I've already got 2 other OAs, so if you're interested in splitting up the work, you would be responsible for a review of a article edit proposal and an article edit itself for 6 students. Let me know if it sounds do-able. Also, the course schedule is up on our course page. Matthewvetter (talk) 19:31, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

The user keeps making mass changes to Chris Crocker without any sources. Unsubstantiated claims were reverted by two different editors. Block him and requesting temporary protection for Chris Crocker. Backendgaming (talk) 07:29, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what the problem is here. Unequivocal has made six edits to the article - two were reversions of vandalism, one was the removal of a section with a clear explanation in the edit summary, and the other three were text changes which, whilst not sourced, were not particularly contraversial. There are no "mass changes" (he's never made the same edit twice), and no vandalism - nothing that would induce me or any other admin to issue a block or protect the page. These are content issues - you need to talk to him about why you believe his edits are incorrect.
- Backendgaming, I appreciate your enthusiasm here, but you need to be aware of - and implement - some fairly important Wikipedia policies. Firstly, we always try to assume good faith if we disagree with another user's edits. Secondly, we discuss disagreements over content, rather than blindly reverting anything we disagree with. Thirdly, we do not block users for just anything. Finally, we have specific criteria for protecting a page, as well as a venue for making such requests. I know that you're comparatively new here and that you're still finding your feet, but please have a read of those links and try to put the advice there into practice. Yunshui 雲水 07:45, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
The article is being requested for protection at the moment. Thanks for the advice, I'll be more careful next time in the near future when dealing with such conflicts. Backendgaming (talk) 07:50, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
- I've commented on the matter here; the Chris Crocker article is certainly an article to keep an eye on. This edit that Unequivocal made is probably what Backendgaming (talk · contribs) meant by "mass changes." And Unequivocal changing "Internet celebrity" simply to "celebrity"? Backendgaming was right to call that POV-pushing. Anyway, we'll see what happens with the article now. Flyer22 (talk) 08:36, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
- Mm, I'd be dubious about calling that "POV pushing" - if he made the same change several times in a row then perhaps, but excepting his most recent edit, Unequiviocal has never replaced any of his changes that have been removed. Neither of you has made any attempt to actually talk to this new user about the changes he's been trying to implement, even though he's tried to explain his reasoning in edit summaries - all I can see on his talkpage are a couple of big red warnings for edit warring. Try doing the "discuss" part of Bold, revert, discuss before you fling him from the parapets. Yunshui 雲水 08:57, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
- Being familiar with the type of dubious editing that can go on at the Chris Crocker article, noted in the first diff-link I provided above, I'm not at all cautious about calling that edit POV-pushing. Even if it were another article, I'd still see it as POV-pushing; POV-pushing does not take more than one edit. I'm not interested in talking with Unequiviocal; if someone else is, then so be it. Flyer22 (talk) 09:20, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

Your perspective is requested for a sandbox draft
Hi, Yunshui. I contacted you at the end of May to ask for help regarding how to present a potentially controversial but well-sourced issue for the article Rolfing. Our earlier thread is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Yunshui/Archive_35#Informal_mentorship_requested. I took your advice and put the information into my sandbox: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Karinpower/sandbox. Please note, this sandbox item is basically what would be posted on the talk page (not a suggested revision to the article itself). Actually, I could use your help on what specific revision to suggest. It's tricky because the sources are split; the sources that offer their own strong sourcing and include more detail lean toward "not massage" yet there are still enough sources that say "massage" that I think it's best to somehow acknowledge the split in the article without dwelling on it too much. (And otherwise removing references to massage in favor of neutral language.) This article seems to have a rather diverse group of editors involved; I expect this proposal to be controversial so I'm seeking some WP-experienced opinions before posting. Thanks in advance!--Karinpower (talk) 18:11, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
- You may well end up having to file a WP:RFC for this one... Your arguments seems pretty sound in a general way, but I'd recommend that you make mention of specific Wikipedia policies/guidelines in support of your position. Ultimately, you can make the soundest argument possible for wording an article in a particular way, but if Wikipedia policy says otherwise, you're on a hiding to nothing. Relevant pages that you may want to review and mention in details include MOS:MED, WP:FRINGE and WP:MEDRS.
- Speaking of WP:MEDRS, several of the sources that you're using could be easily challenged under that guideline. Specifically, I'd say the following would struggle to be retained under a strict interpretation of MEDRS:
- Carroll
- Singh
- Considine
- Levine
- Knaster
- Claire
- and possibly:
- Schultz
- Myers
- I know some of these are used in the article already, but it will make your case stronger if you restrict yourself to sources which are uncontestably suitable for the subject matter.
- Hoping that's helpful. Yunshui 雲水 07:26, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, very helpful! Regarding Singh, I have already petitioned for that source to be removed, and am negotiating with another editor on that. Singh and Carroll are favorites of the Skeptic-minded editors that patrol many of the altmed articles, so they would not want Carroll removed (despite the fact that he doesn't really cite sources that discuss the topic). I would not mind having Considine removed from the Rolfing article; I'm not a fan of magazine articles as sources when books are available. What issue do you see with Levine, Knaster, and Claire, in contrast to the other sources I've cited? Thanks.
- Regarding WP policies, I am familiar with WP:FRINGE and WP:MEDRS. Fringe applies mostly because the studies that have been published are not adequate for WP, however this isn't a subject that's considered particularly "out there." For neutral POV, this is always a tricky one with the Rolfing article - the Skeptic editors often want wording that seems way too negative for an encyclopedic tone, though there is agreement that it shouldn't read like a salespitch or a testimonial either. Regarding "no original research" and source-based verifiability, that's definitely governed my approach. I supposed I could cite WP:FRINGE and specifically mention those 3 principles, to dispel potential criticism. For MEDRS, since there aren't studies that demonstrate health benefits, the strategy has been to find mainstream-published books that review multiple modalities (and hopefully cite printed sources for their information).
- Thanks for linking to MOS:MED - I had been looking for such a page. Interesting read. Though, I'm not sure what impact it would have on this topic. With all three of those pages, if you can be any more specific about how to make use of them, that would be great! Also I have looked high and low for recommendations on how to insert into an article the existence of a small controversy such as this.... it definitely doesn't deserve it's own controversy section. Can you make any suggestions on how to word it, and what section it should go in? Thanks again!!!--Karinpower (talk) 19:41, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Yunshui, sorry to bug you again! If you have time to comment on the MEDRS quality of those sources (regarding why those 3 books are less strong than others), that would be awesome. Thank you! Again, I appreciate your help. --Karinpower (talk) 05:33, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

I would like to maintain that no copyright infringement was done. I referenced a url to a website, a normal and typical practice. No copyrighted material (the raw data itself) was/is used in this section of the article. No word-for-word text was copied from the reference and then pasted to the article.
There seems to be some confusion of what constitues a copyright violation. I can only say that this/these users are well-intentioned and are responding in good faith, wishing to enhance and improve the article. I have been privately contacted by a representive of Southwest Monarch Study via email. I would rather resolve this issue with the assistance other editors who have the expertise of determining copyright violations here on wikipedia rather than thru private corespondance.
Hi Yunshui, just wanted to leave a note regarding the above user, since you unblocked him. The user is back to personally attacking other editors (calling them gyros, losers etc) and leaving controversial edit summaries etc on the Christina Aguilera article again. He/she is probably associating with an off-wiki campaign for enlisting Aguilera fans for editing the article in a positive light.
