Whatcha think?

I'm trying to write an article about a clinic in my area, but I'm a little torn since that does sort of give me a natural COI. (User:Tokyogirl79/Fan Free Clinic) I do see assertions of notability as the clinic is one of the earliest examples of a free clinic, but I'm having trouble finding sources. I can find some stuff, but a lot of it is like this where I can't really see the whole thing. It is cited in a few places as an example of its type, though. I found one scholarly book that lists it extensively. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 05:25, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Looks okay to me; Grassroots Medicine and Lesbian & Gay Richmond would be enough on their own, I reckon. I don't see that you have a COI here, unless you volunteer at the clinic or they saved your life once - writing about stuff that happens to be local to you is fairly common on Wikipedia, and most people (yourself included!) have no trouble doing so neutrally.
Google Books snippet views get on my nerves too; they always show just enough to whet your appetite, but the real meat is always outside the frame... Yunshui  07:21, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Thanks! I don't work with them, but at my job we'll refer people to them as one of the free clinics in the area. (But we don't exclude the others in favor of them, though.) They've also come onto our college campus to talk about various stuff. I haven't gone there, but I've gone to class with people who have and they've always spoken highly of them. I'll add it to the mainspace and if it goes through AfD again or gets deleted, I'll take it back into my userspace. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 08:35, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Deleted copy edited page "criticism of ...

Regarding the recent deletion case of page created by me in the AFC queue , note that the article was not fully copy pasted rather parts of it were paraphrased and there is significant new material in it. Please report with a copy report. As was done in the previous case with the same article which I had improved and paraphrased it to avoid copyright claims. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Summichum (talkcontribs)

@Summichum: I've sampled a number of text strings from your draft, and I've yet to find a sentence within it that hasn't been copied or very closely paraphrased from elsewhere. Sources include this, this, this and this... If anything, this sort of copyright violation is even more insidious than simply replicating an entire article, since it's far harder to detect. Since any original content is inexorably tied up amongst the copyright violations, and since I have neither the time nor the inclination to wade through sentence by sentence identifying and removing the ones that break the law, I will not restore this page. Do not copy text from outside Wikipedia into Wikipedia, in a draft or anywhere else, again. Yunshui  07:17, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Yunshui thanks for the review, I would like to have the original text as it got deleted and I can do this on my sandbox. regarding paraphrasing then I say that a lot of wiki articles are having simple paraphrases. Also can you suggest some further reading on how to summarize the views in these sources for better coverage of all the opinions? Originally i had intended it to submit it to copy editors guild but it was deleted , hence please send me the original text as I will try to summarize it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Summichum (talkcontribs) 07:26, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Restoring the original text to your sandbox or anywhere else would constitute a copyright violation on my part, so no, that isn't going to happen. If you want to write the article - and I'd suggest you read WP:BLP exceedingly carefully before you consider doing so - you will need to do so entirely in your own words. I'm not convinced that an entire article of criticism doesn't violate WP:UNDUE in any case; you'll need a range of reliable sources showing that the criticism itself is notable (not simply that the movement has been criticised or what that criticism is) in order to justify its existence. Yunshui  07:44, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
    • thanks for the advice , I would like to know about the statement ' the criticism itself is notable' , there are many reliable sources for the concerned person on this issue , there are about 12-20 reliable articles on this subject. Is this suffice?
Put it this way: if you have a collection of sources which say something like, "There has been extensive criticism of the movement by those opposed to it, who claim x, y, and z" then you've got sources that show the criticism is notable and can support an article. If, on the other hand, the sources say, "The movement is wrong because x, y, and z", then you just have the criticism itself, with no indication that it meets Wikipedia's notability guideline. Does that help to clarify the difference? Yunshui  09:34, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Some falafel for you!

ZORDANLIGHTER‎‎ AEBLOCK

Hi Yunshui. I'm just seeing the issue with ZORDANLIGHTER‎‎ and your block. I think the block is fine (I would have done it myself but maybe not as an indef), however I don't think it's clear that your action is enforcement of an WP:AE sanction. This is important. Any sysop who would revert your block (without realizing that it's an AEBLOCK) would be in a very serious situation. You need to:

  1. Make it clear that this was an AE block not a regular block, and
  2. Log the action at WP:ARBIP specifically Log of blocks and bans section

It's important for everyone that this kind of action is crystal clear, especially if it's appealed.
I've left a note at ZORDANLIGHTER‎‎'s page in case you don't see this for a while but please refactor your block notice so that it's clear that this is an AEBLOCK and log the block on the WP:ARBIP page--Cailil talk 14:36, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

I've changed the block template and logged the block at ARBIP. Many thanks for pointing that out - I don't have much to do with arb-blocks so I appreciate the help. Yunshui  14:54, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Query

In January you blocked a group of socks as a result of this SPI. They were engaged in POV editing promoting the subject of the Jonathan King article, and diminishing his criminal conviction - with a probable COI. In the last two days 2 IPs have edited the article with very similar traits, making similar points with a similar POV. I think they are linked to the sock farm, one as a sock and one as a meat puppet. I think the best solution would be a period of semi-protection for the article. But I'm not sure how to proceed and which forum to go to. Should it be SPI or WP:RFP for instance. Could you advise? Thanks. DeCausa (talk) 20:37, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) May I make a suggestion? If you think that other editors would be able to see the similarities via WP:DUCK then an SPI would be a good idea. Also yes if IPs and/or users that have appeared saaaay in the last day or two (accounts not confirmed or autoconfirmed) are the only major problem then yes a request for page protection should be okay to be put in. Request for review

Hi Yunshui,

You provided some excellent guidance as for how I can be of help getting the Novozymes article in compliance with Wikipedia standards and guidelines. As per your suggestions, I have written a new Introduction as part of my User page, which I would like to hear whether you have time to review and potentially add to the article?

With many thanks, and kind regards,

Fred at Novozymes Fred at Novozymes (talkcontribs) 12:32, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi Fred. Wikipedia articles don't normally have introductions, as such - they start off with a lead section, which is basically an abbreviated summary of the article's content, not an introduction to the topic. Don't worry, most people make the same assumption. What I'd suggest you do with your draft is split off the individual paragraphs into the appropriate sections in the existing article (the second paragraph, for example, would go under the Business areas and technologies heading). I'd also suggest that you propose these changes on the article's talkpage; the information about Novozymes various accolades, whilst suitably sourced, would seem like promotional editing coming from a COI account. By putting your proposal on the talkpage (add the template {{edit request}} at the top of your message there), it can be reviewed and added to the article by an impartial editor, which will preserve you from any accusations of non-neutrality.
(@Matticusmadness: Fred's talking about this subpage, rather than his actual userpage, but thanks for the review nevertheless.) Yunshui  07:30, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Yes, and please note the coincidence in timing of my today's update report here. DeCausa (talk) 21:45, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
It does indeed look like a very long-term issue. I'd expect the clerk who archives the investigation to rename it; but it makes sense to keep it in its current location while the investigation takes place. Yunshui  09:14, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

WP mentorship

Hi Yunshui, there is a proposal ongoing about a development of Wikipedia mentoring, to make it slicker and a better, more standerdised process. We would love to have you on board, and would appreciate your help, anything you can do, from reading the proposal and leaving comments to volunteering to be a part of the scheme is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matty.007 16:24, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

I was actually involved with that project for a while, and Jethro, Soni et al already know I'm happy to assist if they need anything. At present, I'm too busy IRL to commit to a serious project role, but I'll gladly help out with specific tasks if asked. Yunshui  09:20, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Hello

I made some vandalism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.197.64.118 (talk) 18:10, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Since the dimwit user has the intelligence to use the software you'd think he'd have the intelligence to stop leaving me messages after I point out I don't have the privileges to restore a page, so either one he isn't reading replies (which as we know from when he replied to you with his sources cannot be the case) or two he has competence issues. Any chance we can block this one on WP:CIR's grounds? MM ("Well? What have you got to report?") ("My new invention!") 00:54, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Be nice. I'd agree that he's here for the wrong reasons and doesn't understand how Wikipedia works - and I think the language barrier is likely to prevent him from doing so any time soon - but a CIR block is a bit excessive. My expectation is that he'll realise before very long that his page isn't coming back, and will move on of his own accord. Until then, our job is to explain to the best of our ability why his submission isn't appropriate - at the moment, he's not really doing anything disruptive so blocking him wouldn't be a preventative measure. Why don't you point him to WP:REFUND and see if they can explain thing any better? Yunshui  09:17, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
The language barrier I wasn't aware of. Whoopsathon. I'm starting to wonder how I got no ☒Nes in the 'Civility' section of my Adoption School. ._.' If he shows up again I'll kick him in that direction then. (And given that he has a thing for disappearing for a few days and reappearing he might just.) MM (I did the who in the whatnow?) Dude!

You do realise you just WIPED my talkpage right? TheGRVOfLightning (talk) 14:50, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Yes, along with a large number of your user subpages. This isn't a forum where you and MasterMind5991 can just shoot the breeze about anything that takes your fancy, or run quizzes for each other, or make up imaginary TV shows. A certain amount of banter is perfectly normal and acceptable, but reams upon reams of text which has minimal, if any, relevance to the project is contrary to the userspace policy. Yunshui  15:01, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Ok. Could you please place the text back up so I can move it to my own Wikia. TheGRVOfLightning (talk) 15:02, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Adoption School Suggestion RE: Phyllis Baldino

I think it's obvious from how I've gone about this that I still need training huh? But I feel something good has come out of this. I think it's clear that I didn't really have full clue how to deal with a visit from the subject of the article. Perhaps it's worth sticking a question about this into your adoption school for the future? MM (I did the who in the whatnow?) (I did this! Me!) 11:59, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Given the prevalence of COI editors these days a section on how to deal with them would be a good idea; thanks for the inspiration! The two lessons to take away from that little affair are:
  • BRD is a three-letter acronym; there's a reason it isn't called WP:BRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBR...
  • Think of ANI as your nuclear button: use it as a last resort. As a rule, unless you've already talked things out fairly extensively with the other party to no avail, you don't need to get the admins involved.
You might also want to take a look at Linguini17's talkpage to see the message I left there, if you haven't already. Yunshui  12:09, 24 April 2014 (UTC)
Your message was how I realised I goofed. Whoopsasnickerdoodle. ANI being like a nuke is actually a pretty good way of putting it I'll say that. Mental Note: BRD. Duly Noted. MM (I did the who in the whatnow?) (I did this! Me!) 12:28, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Usage of a phrase

Hello, I have noticed that you always ask the same 3 questions in response to copyright infringement. I recently used them whist helping a RFU, I stated that these questions would likely be asked by an Admin and then listed the questions. Is it OK that I used it? Thanks, Happy Attack Dog (Bark! Bark!) 22:29, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Was that at User talk:Nomu420? Yeah, I've no problem with you using my words (wouldn't really matter if I did, anyway). One friendly word of advice, though: a common reaction to seeing large numbers of non-admin comments on admin related matters by the same user is to think "uh-oh, admin wannabe alert". If you're thinking of standing for an RFA at some point in your Wikipedia career, opining on every unblock request that you see will do more to hurt your chances than help them. Comments which provide useful information for the admin who reviews the block are welcomed (if, for example, you want to note that the user has been evading the block with another account, or if you want to point out something pertinent in their edit history, that's quite helpful), but comments which basically read as, "If I was an admin, I'd do this," really won't do you any favours in the long run. BLP proposed deletion articles.

Hi Yunshui, I am working at BLP proposed deletion articles. After adding references I am removing the prod tag. I hope it is right to remove the tag as I have added references and I don't think they should be proposed for deletion.--Skr15081997 (talk) 13:14, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

The thing about BLPPROD tags is that they should really only be removed after the addition of reliable sources - I'm not completely sure those you've added make the cut (George Kimpton's not looking too good, for example - I note, as well, that that article has already been deleted once at AFD, and the text there was really not too dissimilar to the current page). N Bhaskar Rao looks okay. As long as you introduce at least one source that meets WP:RS, it's perfectly fine to remove the tag. Good work! Yunshui  19:32, 24 April 2014 (UTC)
Yunshui, thanks a lot for the above advice. I have noticed that you always use polite language and encourage new and willing editors, that's the reason I consult you whenever I am in any trouble or have a doubt.--Skr15081997 (talk) 09:13, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Very well; I will restore the page and move it to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Sanjay Upadhyaye. Someone removed the picture from Rajneesh Duggal . I don't think it was necessary . Yunshui  --Championkiller (talk) 07:59, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

It's not that they removed it per se, but in trying to change all instances of his name to the spelling "Rajniesh" they broke the link that transcluded the picture. I've reverted back to your last edit for the time being, but if the spelling of his name is in dispute then a discussion needs to take place. Yunshui  08:05, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Actually his real name is Rajneesh Duggal. But nowadays because of numerology and astrologer's advice some Bollywood actors are changing the alphabets in their name. So both the names are correct in this sense. But those who edited and because of that picture was removed, they might try once again. They must find a way to edit without removing the picture Championkiller (talk) 15:43, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Advice about deletions, please...

Dear Yunshui: Thanks for your offer to answer questions. Here's my first one: I am used to nominating pages for deletion, and then waiting for an admin to delete them. That's two sets of eyes. Now that I can delete pages, should I delete those that I detect myself (one set of eyes), or should I continue to nominate those I find, and instead help out by checking and deleting pages nominated by other editors (maintaining the two sets of eyes, but taking up more of people's time)? The very first page that I came to that I feel needs deleting is Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Lepidopterophobia, and of course it had to be a case I haven't dealt with before - it's a copy-paste remnant, not worth history merging, of Lepidopterophobia, but this article has been changed into a redirect to a third article, so the content is not visible, although still accessible. —Anne Delong (talk) 03:07, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

@Anne Delong: Welcome to the endlessly debatable use of the mop... As far as CSD deletions go, I'll delete stuff that's an unquestionably obvious CSD on sight, without waiting for another set of eyes. Anything that I'm not 100% certain of, I'll tag and leave for someone else to take a look. The AFC you're referring to would be one that I'd want a second opinion on - personally I'd say it's a potentially valid topic, and could in theory be sourced and expanded, so I'd be loathe to delete it out-of-hand under any criterion except G13. Mind you, Mr Strad (whose opinions I tend to respect) has already effectively given his view on the matter by redirecting the mainspace article, so I'd suggest there's enough of a second opinion there to let you go ahead and delete the AFC. Yunshui  18:33, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
I figured that the content is not really gone; it's just hidden in the redirect. I deleted the old draft and left a message on the Entomophobia talk page in case anyone wants to use the text to expand that article. —Anne Delong (talk) 23:08, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

What do you think of restoring talk page access to User:The Wikimon, after a block for more than 12 month, in case he wants to appeal? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:24, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Not a lot, to be honest - barring exceptional circumstances, sockpuppet editors need to appeal their block via their original account. In this case, that's Vrghs jacob, an account which still has talkpage access. There's no reason to restore talkpage access for the sock account. Yunshui  11:56, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Advice about transclusion

Hello, it's me, the Question Lady. I want to delete the article Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Salt-water batteries under db-g13, because the experts at Wikiproject Chemistry all agree that it's useless. So, following the directions, I looked first to see what linked to that page. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Salt-water_batteries ).

There are five links. I plan to (1) let the Wikiproject Chemistry link stay as a redlink (2) Delete the link on my own page (4) Delete the sandbox redirect under G8 and (5) leave a likely useless note on the user's talk page. (Or should I bother considering the Hasteurbot's warning?)

That leave (3), which I don't understand. The page is linked to itself? Afc submissions have this, but articles don't. Is it the transcluded Afc templates that are linking? Is there anything I need to do about this entry? —Anne Delong (talk) 01:21, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Might be something to do with it being transcluded into AFC... I'm not sure, to be honest; there's something in the AFC setup that transcludes the contents of the page into itself, but I'm not familiar with how it works. In any case, I see no issue with you deleting this page. Yunshui  07:56, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I've opened a GAR on the Ahmedabad article for which you are a main contributor. I have concerns that it does not quite meet current GA criteria regarding sourcing and MoS. I rather concur with your assessment regarding the ongoing degradation of the article by inexperienced editors. TBH it's not a topic that's of particular interest to me (I got involved as a favour to another user), so I'm not particularly keen to spend my time bringing it up to scratch again only to see it delisted again in six months due to continued well-meaning but incompetent edits. Thanks for letting me know, nevertheless. Yunshui  08:04, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

I've tried to do a clean rewrite, merging the two into a single page, with a draft currently at User:Andrew Gray/Europeana; any thoughts before I move it to mainspace? Andrew Gray (talk) 21:58, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Looks good to me, nice work. Want me to move it for you? (You can move it yourself to Europeana Collections 1914-1918, but if you want to title it Europeana 1914-1918 then you'll need someone to delete the redirect first). Yunshui  08:00, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks - I've now copied it through to mainspace & overwritten the redirect. (It seemed easier than delete-and-restore). Andrew Gray (talk) 11:55, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

The Deletion of Neilvin John Aventurado

Hello yunshui,

I just wanted you to know that the article is redirected from my User page, okay. Why did you just delete my page? Why did not you read first the article subarticle "As a Wikipedia user". Actually, it is just nominated by User:HelicopterLlama for speedy deletion, but I just want first to explain to him that the article was redirected from my user page and the article was about me, my website, and etc. Now, please return it (my article), it is hard to do article, I'm ready to show evidences that me, John.neilvin is Neilvin John Aventurado (my real name). Thanks!

Deleted talk page

Hi Yunshui - I saw that you deleted an unsolicited request for information from my talk page (thank you, by the way). I saw that the user's block reason was due to editing from an IP address. My question is: Is what the user posted on my page against Wiki rules as well, or if he/she was logged in, would it have been acceptable? It appears he/she was just spamming it to random users. Thanks so much. Justin15w (talk) 18:33, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

The block was to prevent further disruption, but wasn't anything to do with him editing without an account - the IP block message is there in case anyone else happens to use the same IP, so that they have information about what has happened and what they can do about it. The attempted "statistical survey" wouldn't have been acceptable even if he did have an account. Yunshui  20:27, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Looks like you've had a busy weekend... Hopefully the ANI thread and deletion review are beginning to demonstrate to you how Wikipedia actually works - we have very clear policies and guidelines in place regarding both content and conduct, and you're expected to abide by these even if you disagree with them. Whilst Dude1250 might have been rather heavy-handed in his approach (I get the impression that English isn't his first language, which probably doesn't help), as I read it he's trying - somewhat ineptly - to explain these policies and guidelines to you. Nothing I've seen in the interactions between the two of you comes close to harassment, except for your own statement that you have sent your legal team after him and requested that the Wikimedia Foundation disclose his IP address to the police - that's harassment (or chilling, to be more precise).
The entire situation boils down to this - you want to use a private website (and yes, Wikipedia is a private website, despite being open to all) to promote your client. The website has policies that prevent you from doing so. Since Wikipedia is under no obligation, legal or otherwise, to allow you to edit here, you can either abide by those policies and not promote your client here, or you can leave. That, quite simply, is the crux of the matter, and the sooner you grasp it, the sooner you will be able to either edit in peace, or find a more appropriate outlet. Yunshui  07:16, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

With only 35 edits to Wikipedia's mainspace, you aren't yet at the point where we'd consider you for CVUA training. When you've made around 200 edits to articles, come back and ask again, and I'd be glad to help. Yunshui  07:18, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

If you are affected by the autoblock, then you need to follow the instructions that you see when you try to edit - copy the message across to your user talkpage, and I or another administrator will investigate whether or not to change the block setting. Again, there is no way whatsoever that your "friend" Osama... is getting unblocked. Yunshui  07:20, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

CVUA training

Hello Yunshui! I saw earlier that another person has asked you for CVUA training. Can you help me with the academy as I'd love to fight vandalism. Also, just a question, will having training make you have a better chance at getting the right? I know that you go to this page to request permissions. WooHoo!Talk to me! 17:32, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Brandon. You're still a bit shy of the minimum mainspace edit count required for CVUA training (just over 100 edits to mainspace when I checked a moment ago). We generally don't accept trainees with fewer than 200 mainspace edits - this means that trainers know their students have at least a basic grasp of Wikipedia's content policies. It's a bit of an arbitrary figure admittedly, but after 200 live edits most people will have encountered a reasonable range of Wikipedia pages and editing scenarios. As far as rollback rights go, CVUA isn't a fast-track to rollback, but most administrators will take CVUA training into consideration when deciding whether to grant the right or not. Really, Rollback isn't that special - it only removes three mouseclicks from the revert procedure, and you kind of get it for free with Twinkle anyway. Yunshui  07:26, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Request for Adoption

Hello Yunshui,
My name is Gaurav and I am a new user. I was looking for an adopter. So I would like to get adopted.
Thank You. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gaurav2192 (talkcontribs) 10:16, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Gaurav2192. Sure, why not? Lesson one: whenever you leave a message on a talkpage like this (not in an article), you should always sign your comment - do so by adding four tildes (~~~~) at the end. This will automatically sign and datestamp your message. If you don't have a tilde key on your keyboard, there's an "Insert" menu at the bottom of the editing window which will allow you to do this automatically.
The first thing you'll need to do is set up an adoption school - go to my base adoption school and follow the instructions under "Your first task".
Note that I've also moved your draft article to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Labourworks. Since there is no user called User:Labourworks, you can't store a page at that location. I fear the article will probably be refused in its current state; you'll probably be asked for additional sources. We can work together to improve it (though to give you fair warning, it may be the case that Labourworks doesn't meet Wikipedia's content requirements - if that's the case, it won't be turned into an article no matter what. However, if it can be made article worthy, I'll help you get it there).
I look forward to working with you. Yunshui  10:28, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Not sure what went wrong...

Dear Yunshui: I deleted this page: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Georg Branting because it was a copy-paste and the editor had also been editing the mainspace article. Then I realized that the decline reason was wrong, and that there was a lot of rather negative unsourced material (although the person is no longer alive) that was not transferred to the main article and should have been mentioned. I undeleted it and deleted it again with a new summary, but for some reason the new text was not picked up, and I ended up with an identical deletion entry. Now the log has two incorrect deletions, and I am afraid that if I do anything further it will make a worse mess. Is there any way to change the deletion rationale or delete one of the duplicate entries? —Anne Delong (talk) 11:31, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Anne. I must confess, I'm not actually seeing the problem here - as far as I can tell from the deletion log for the page, it looks as though you deleted it once under G6, claiming it was copied from the live article, restored it as an incorrect deletion, and then deleted it again under G10 because of the defamatory content. That's what the text of the deletions indicates. There are no identical entries in the log - you might need to refresh your browser cache if that's what you're seeing. Yunshui  11:43, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, Yunshui, that worked. I will keep that in mind if that happens again, but hopefully I will pay more attention and not have to delete an article twice to get it right. —Anne Delong (talk) 11:56, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Page Deletion

Dear Mr. Yunshui,

I have made an article for Mr. Fouad Chaaban, here is a red link for that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fouad_Chaaban

The page has been deleted. I really want to make him a new page since he is a famous businessman in the telecommunication field. I have seen the process of writing an article but unfortunately the page was deleted and I do not know the reason, although I wrote about this person who has influence in a Telco field and not his CV or something.

How can I make him an article with the same name and different format so that it would be accepted on your reputable website, Wikipedia.\\

I would really appreciate your reply and your help with that.

Please note that the username on Wikipedia is not done by Mr. Fouad personally. I am his assistant.

Fouad Chaaban (talk) 12:21, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Firstly, if you are not actually Fouad Chaaban, you need to file a Change of username request - Wikipedia does not permit the use of usernames which impersonate people.
Secondly, if you are editing on his behalf, then you have a conflict of interest with Wikipedia. If this is the case you should not create an article yourself; instead, you may request that an article be created.
If you are not willing to allow a neutral editor to do the work and believe that Wikipedia needs an article about him, I recommend the following course of action:
  1. Locate at least three sources about Mr Chaarban. These can be newspaper articles, chapters in books, magazine profiles and so on. The important thing is that they must be independent of the man himself, ie. not press releases, his own statements, his website or LinkedIn profile etc. They also need to contain a reasonable amount of information about him (passing mentions don't count), and will need to be reliably published (so no blogs, YouTube videos etc.).
  2. In your user sandbox, write down in your own words what these sources say about him. Do not add any information that is not derived from these sources, and do not copy text from the sources themselves.
  3. Organise the information you now have into a basic article. Wikipedia's manual of style can help you with this. If you need help with the formatting, have a look at the cheatsheet.
  4. Check that the article is neutral. This means that it does not contain any wording that praises or defames Mr Chaarban, but simply reports in an unbiased way the information you have gleaned from your sources.
  5. Cite the information you have used to the sources that you got it from. Here's how.
  6. Finally, tag the page for review by putting the code {{subst:submit}} at the top.
The page will then be reviewed at Articles for creation. It may be moved into article space as is, or the reviewer may require some alterations; either way, they will let you know. Yunshui  12:33, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you Mr. Yunshui.

I will see what i can do with the information and advises you told me about above. If there's any inquiry about it I will ask you for sure.

Thanks again.

Hi Yunshui,

Thank you for helping me to learn how to edit articles. What steps can I take to be a senior editor on Wikipedia and how to make an article 'good', as in with the little green plus sign that appears on the top right-hand part of the article. Also, do you like to use any of the beta features, in particular the edit beta? What are some the main articles you have contributed to, and what is your favourite board game?

I use British English too :) It's because I come from Australia.

Routgs (talk) 11:30, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Routgs. That's quite a collection of questions, but to take them one at a time:
  • There's not really such a thing as a "senior editor" - there's an entirely unofficial system of Service awards that uses the term, but effectively everyone has an equal voice here. There's such a thing as an experienced editor, which is simply someone who has been around long enough to know most of the policies and procedures that are in use here - that simply comes with time.
  • Good articles simply have to meet the appropriate criteria - to bring an article to Good Article status, one just makes improvements until these criteria are met. Usually that means fixing spelling and grammar errors, improving the prose, making sure the sources are sufficient and so on - the stuff we try to do all the time with every article, really. In reality, much depends on the reviewer - there are a range of interpretations of the criteria, and if you get someone particularly thorough it may take several attempts to get the page promoted.
  • Personally I'm not a fan of most of the beta features, especially not the Visual Editor - I was raised on wikimarkup, and it's second nature to me now.
  • My GA creations are linked at the top of my userpage, and here's a list of all the pages I've (pretty much) written myself. If you want to see where an editor's efforts have been expended, go to "User contributions" in the Tools menu on the left, and scroll right to the bottom of the resulting contributions page. "Edit count" will tell you how many edits they have made and in which areas (note the "Top edited Pages" tab at the top), "Articles created" will list all their page creations.
  • Go, no question. It's sublime.
All the best, Yunshui  11:53, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
