UTRS Account Request

I confirm that I have requested an account on the UTRS tool. Yunshui

I've activated your account. Thanks for volunteering.--v/r - TP 21:05, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Thank You

Hi Yunshui,

Thank you for your kind words! It is highly appreciated. I have undone my edit to ResonX's Talkpage, and I would highly appreciate it if you moved Ster Kinekor to "Ster-Kinekor".

I will certainly continue my editing, and I would appreciate it if you accepted the following award:

The Working Man's Barnstar
Thank you very much for all the extra miles you've went to support my editing, not to mention that unblock a couple of weeks ago! by Kevin12cd Talk to me This was posted at 22:27, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Kevin. I'll sort that page move out for you. Keep up the good work! Yunshui  07:53, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello Mr. Yunshui, I need help once more, on the topic of selective editing. As you can see from the above article page it has been at war (behind the scenes) a war with hidden messages and notions. since lot of news paper articles are available it seems that some users are selectivly putting few sentences in the article to get a one pointed view option, so how to counter this and keep the article in a neutral tone. Shrikanthv (talk) 08:10, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

The section being edit warred over is a direct copy of this page from the party's website, which is non-free. As such, its inclusion is a copyright violation, and I've removed it. It can be freely removed by any editor without fear of violating the three-revert rule, since Wikipedia cannot host copyrighted materials for any length of time. Yunshui  08:23, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the new rules for me (the three-revert rule), Here is also my concern A Sentence like below.

"" after his movement with Anna Hazare dissipated in August 2012 with thin crowds and the Government ignoring him "" is referencing the link Please check the last para

The sentences are taken out of context and put here to bring about a deferent meaning. ( as the govt ignored him in August for doing a hunger strike. while it was different thing compared to the thing which is stated now.

So my question is how to counter this edits which take two sentences from different context and put across together to bring about a different meaning.

same thing had happend in the article upanishads where following two different sentences were added to get new output

sen - 1 " Dr Ambedkar was against caste system "

Sen -2 " Upanishads talk about caste system "

Adding 1+2 Ambedkar was against upanishads !!! ?? how to solve such a notion Shrikanthv (talk) 09:01, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Another blue link for you: WP:SYNTH. We have a specific policy against combining sources to make a claim that neither source actually makes (it's part of the No original research policy). That said, although the Upanishads example is very clearly a violation of WP:SYNTH, I can sort of see the logic that led to the sentence in the Aam Aadmi article - the hunger strike was apparently co-existent with the India Against Corruption movement, so it may just be poorly worded. I'd suggest you posit an alternative wording on the articles talkpage; perhaps something like: "The party was launched after the failure(?) of the India Against Corruption Movement, which Kejriwal led with his mentor Anna Hazare. A hunger strike by Kejriwal was largely ignored by the government." Yunshui  09:11, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Unblock on hold at User talk:128.243.236.10

Normally, I consult the blocking admin before reversing their decision if I disagree with it, as you did. However, for what it's worth, on this occasion I would have been bold and just unblocked. The block does seem really disproportionate. JamesBWatson (talk) 09:41, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi James. Appreciate the advice, as always. I did give serious consideration to doing exactly that, but I've usually found Alexf to be a pretty competent admin, so I didn't want to undo his work without checking with him first. No objections from this quarter if you want to go ahead and unblock over the top of my review, though. Yunshui  10:09, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
I agree that Alexf is competent, and reasonable too. I have no intention of going against your decision to consult him/her. Nor did I intend my comment to be a criticism of what you did. Quite simply, in a situation where two different courses of action were both possible, you decided it one way where I would have decided it the other way. I felt like letting you know how I felt about it, that's all, really. If you had declined the unblock request then I would have wondered what you had in mind, but I don't think I would ever object to consulting the blocking admin first: better to err on the side of too much consultation than too little. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:57, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Competent, reasonable and, as it turns out, happy enough to lift the block. I always appreciate hearing your opinion; thanks. In fact, if I could ask your view on an unrelated topic... I recently issued a fairly stern final warning to Coginsys - I feel it was about time someone took that stance, but I'm concerned that my actions might be seen as rather unilateral; if you'd care to offer an opinion on my actions, I'd be grateful. Cheers, Yunshui  11:32, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
I have looked at the editor's history, and, all things considered, I think you made a very reasonable and measured response to the problems. I completely agree with you that the editor has made a few useful edits, but they are completely outweighed by various negative aspects. In addition to the issues you mentioned, there are WP:COMPETENCE issues in several areas. For example, a number of the edits are to articles on mathematical topics, and it is clear that the editor simply does not understand the topics on which he/she has tried to contribute. He/she has repeatedly tried to simplify explanations of mathematical topics, but in doing so has removed essential content which has left the remaining text simply wrong. Add that to civility problems, WP:OWN problems, intemperate rants about anything he/she doesn't like about Wikipedia, etc etc, and we have major problems. The editor's small amount of constructive editing is swamped by the amount of extra work created for others in reverting his/her well-meaning but misguided efforts, replying to his unconstructive talk page posts, etc etc. I think you were perfectly right at this stage to give a civil but very firm warning. I am sure the editor has good intentions, but the fundamental problem, it seems to me, is a belief that he/she knows best, that anyone who disagrees with him/her is an obstructive fool, and a total lack of any ability to consider other editors' points of view. Unfortunately, I think it's likely to be a question of when, rather than whether, to decide enough is enough. JamesBWatson (talk) 12:41, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
That eases my mind somewhat. Thanks for looking at it. Yunshui  12:45, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

My page Armaggeddon (gaming)

Hi,

I want to ask you why you thought the page Armaggeddon (gaming) qualified for deletion under A7. It is a legitimate company that is growing in Singapore and Asia-Pacific regions. You can check out the website here - armaggeddon.net

Armaggeddon is a gaming peripherals company that is recieving a lot of notice. The facebook page has nearly 18,000 likes and the brand is getting featured in a lot of newspaper articles, etc.

Nikhita.08 (talk) 10:18, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Your submission did not indicate why the subject was notable enough for inclusion. Wikipedia's primary inclusion guideline is notability, which, on this site, means coverage in reliable, independent sources (such as newspapers, magazine articles, television programmes, research papers, books or reliable websites). The only source provided in the article was the company's own website, which is obviously not independent and therefore cannot be used as evidence of notability. Facebook likes are also not considered indicative of notability. If the company has indeed been featured in newspaper articles then you should cite these as references in any future version of the page; however, be aware that press releases and passing mentions are also not sufficient. See this page for a simple explanation of the requirements. Yunshui  11:25, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Intelligence?

Just suppose you decide to do something on Wikipedia that, if noticed, would certainly be deleted and lead to your being blocked. Would you (a) announce what you were doing on the talk page of an administrator who had previously blocked you and deleted similar stuff, or (b) keep quiet about it? Hmm. A difficult decision, eh? One might not think so, but, without mentioning any particular recent incident, it's amazing how often people in this situation go for option (a). JamesBWatson (talk) 14:02, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Competence is required - basic common sense is optional, I guess... Still, it makes our job a lot easier; I wish more serial sockpuppeteers were so considerate. Yunshui  14:19, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes. Quite a few are, but not most, and even those who do it mostly eventually learn not to. However, occasionally we have someone who doesn't learn. I don't know if you ever came across Mr. Curious Man, but time and again he created sockpuppet accounts and right away announced, in effect, that this was a new one of his sockpuppets. He used to seem to be genuinely puzzled as to how we knew, when he had effectively told us. He never seemed to learn. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:26, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

A beer for you!

Thank you for your quick help regarding to my deleted article! Respect! Bonayr (talk) 14:56, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Well thank you for the beer, but I should warn you that I'm giving serious consideration to deleting the page again, under a variety of speedy deletion criteria. It contains no independent reliable sources (and thus fails Wikipedia's basic inclusion requirements) and it reads like an attempt to promote the product (with its list of features and instructions on installation) - that would get it deleted under G11, as well as being a violation of these two sections of What Wikipedia is not. You need to do the following ASAP: remove the section on installation entirely, rephrase the article in neutral, encyclopedic language, and find reliable sources that discuss the subject in detail and that are not connected to the company. Yunshui  15:03, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

I notice in addition that the article is still unapproved at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/JayData; the most appropriate course of action would be for you to add a {{db-G7}} tag to the page in mainspace and return to editing the AFC page instead. It will mean less hassle for you in the long run if you can bring the page to an acceptable standard before it gets published. Yunshui  15:07, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Some more advice, please?

Hello Yunshui,

I know you are always very busy but I wonder if you would be kind enough to give me some advice - or point me in the correct direction, please?

Utonagan - this is not a breed of dog recognised by any official bodies so cannot actually have any ‘official’ breed clubs. However, there appears to be a bit of an edit war going on, constantly changing one of the external links backwards and forwards. My suggestion would be to follow the recommended dog breed article structure and completely delete both the external links to attempt to resolve the situation?

Also Cesky Terrier was protected for a spell because of edit conflicts. This seems to have re-started now the article is no longer protected (the protection template is still appearing on Talk:Cesky Terrier. Again I wonder if all breed club external links should be deleted under the above recommendation to stop at least part of the conflict which appears to be raging? I don’t know what to suggest about the constant chopping and changing of the history section though!

I don’t want to aggravate the situation with either of the articles/editors involved but feel the fairly long running differences on both articles should come to some kind of resolution.

With your more in depth experience, do you think if I took the above actions and posted a message on the talk page of each article, it would be constructive? Or might it just make matters worse?

SagaciousPhil - Chat 15:47, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Phil, nice to hear from you.
As regards Utonagan, the British Utonagan Society may meet the requirements set out at the external links policy, but since I can't view the content (I can't download the necessary plugins on my antique PC) I can't really make a call one way or the other. If it contains information that could feasibly enhance a reader's understanding of the breed, there's no reason not to include it; it doesn't ring any of the alarm bells listed in the recommended article structure. The correct URL appears to be http://www.britishutonaganassociation.com. I wouldn't worry overmuch about this one.
Cesky Terrier (that's the most hilarious-looking dog I've ever seen, BTW) does seem to be getting a pasting at the moment; looks like two rival dog clubs having a scrap over who gets listed on the page. I don't know enough about doggy history to comment on which, if either, is in the right, but I would strongly suggest a knowledgeable editor like yourself get involved on the talkpage there. If you feel it's necessary, you can request page protection be reinstated by filing a request at Requests for page protection (a very straightforward process); I'd try getting a dialogue started between the warring editors first, though. As a general rule, starting a discussion is rarely if ever going to make things worse - Wikipedia relys on consensus for content, and you don't get consensus without conversation.
Cheers, Yunshui  08:27, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, Yunshui! I've tried to sort the problematic bit in the Cesky Terrier article in a neutral way and posted on the talk page, also the talk pages of the recently conflicting editors. I had been looking at the article with a view to re-vamp it as it's generally in a pretty bad shape Wiki-wise but decided not to when I saw the arguments raging. BTW, I also think it's a pretty weird dog, my preference is for Gundogs, mainly Setters and Welsh Springers - proper dogs!
Thank you so much for your help and encouragement; I've really began to enjoy 'messing about' on Wiki. I find sorting out references challenging but feel I'm getting towards working them out now. It reminds me of when I had to use DOS commands to get computers to do anything and my computer at the time continually screamed at me "Bad command or file name". Everything is much easier nowadays.

Personal attacks

OK, enough is enough, these series of personal attacks by User:Pks1142 needs to stop! Calling me Indian moron, fool, foul thinking, trolling against me while making bad comments, racism comments "Indian ho.. indian hi raho.. these all NEED to stop! I mean just what the hell! Is this how you communicate when disagreements happen? Have I ever even did any attack on the user that he/she is making such comments? Yunshui you please analyze and do the needful, since you have seen this from the beginning. Else I again have to go to ANI which I seriously don;t want to. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 03:33, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

I just noticed the user accused me of sockpuppetry, so I noticed that I had edited wihtout logging in [this IP], that might be the case. Just clarifying. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 03:39, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Still continuing with go to hell. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 04:33, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Oh really Indian bio hello I was not talking about race...ok .what about you when you were attacking by saying WTF does it is a love quote?.you also attacked me by saying about my bad English. You went to edit with two accounts ok ....Sock puppetry, If u forgot to log in then how could u edit the next article with your username and again you reverted my account by up address.hello it doesn't make sense ok,bcoz you were taking advantage and you thought nobody would understand. You can remove edit without discussion so why i can't.
Yanshui i would ask for his block in case of sock puppetry and I'm even worried about User:GleekVampire is also his account.if you want to block me for attacking I'm ready for it and he did same with me.(Pks1142 (talk) 05:55, 1 December 2012 (UTC))
I did not attack you saying bad English, rather I wanted to help you with it if you see my post there. You posted a block message on my talk page where you have no admin rights to do so and I removed that with the edit summary as "WTF". I already clarified that the IP belongs to me, I have no interest in socking, but can't help it if I have been logged out. I'm fine if admins say that my IP is a sock, I will make sure that I am always logged in. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 06:08, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I have blocked Pks1142 for 2 days for the blatant and unacceptable personal attacks. While I don't see a specific templated warning about this...this is just obvious. Hopefully 2 days off will let him come back and edit appropriately. Qwyrxian (talk) 06:23, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Good call, Qwyrx (and generous too; he'd have gotten at least a week off from me...); thanks for handling it. I guess that nips it in the bud for now, but let me know if the personal attacks continue once Pks1142's block expires. Yunshui  08:09, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Request for Page Protection

Hi Yunshui,

I am requesting Page Protection for my Userpage. As I do a great deal of vandal-fighting, I feel that my Userpage is prone to attacks by raging vandals. It has already been vandalized once. Please consider this request.

by Kevin12cd Talk to me This was posted at 23:45, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

We wouldn't normally protect a page after just one instance of vandalism (see the protection policy), but in this case, I can't see that it can do any harm. The only people editing that page should be you and potentially the occasional admin, so semi-protection won't cause any problems. Duly done. Yunshui  08:05, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

AfD/CSD

Hi, Yunshui. Thanks for deleting Christian Montoya so quickly! One problem, though - the AfD was a batch nomination (or whatever you call it), and the other four articles haven't reached any consensus (or qualified for and CSDs, as far as I know). I'm not sure what policy is here... re-open the thread, move the other four to a new thread, something in between? I'd also appreciate any advice on how to handle the Christian (Entertainer) A10 issue I raised in my comment, if you have time. Thanks! :) — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 11:09, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Sorry about that; I got called away from my computer when I was halfway through sorting it out. All the co-nommed articles have now been deleted under A9. I'm not going to restore Christian (Entertainer) without at least a REFUND request appearing, since viewing the deleted content convinces me that it would quickly get hit with either an A7/G11 speedy, a PROD or another AFD; there's nothing there to indicate notability, and plenty to suggest it's a puff piece by the performer himself or an agent. Yunshui  11:17, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and on an unrelated note, I'm happy to see that Coren unblocked you - I glanced at the block briefly at the weekend (I don't edit often at weekends due to lack of time) and thought, "oh, I'd better have a word with Coren about that on Monday..." - nice to see he was willing to 'fess up and fix the problem. Yunshui  11:20, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for getting all the articles. :) Maybe this will be a wake-up call to User:Tysmooth before he gets himself blocked again for inappropriate article creation. As to the block, yes, it's good to be back. Here's hoping this is the last time that happens. :) Thanks, by the way, for choosing the other way to respond to a new user who wants to leap right in. Glad to have finally gotten the chance to work with you, almost a month after you gave me such a kind welcome. — Francophonie&Androphilie(Je vous invite à me parler) 13:01, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Your reply

I appreciate you offering to help me. I have alot of questions. The article I created was done with alot of help. I wouldn't know how to get it to that standard again by myself thats for sure. With regards to that article, it says its an orphan so I'd like to fix that to start. I added a link where the man's name appeared on a related article but the message still is displayed. I suppose I would have to remove it if what I did fixes that issue, but need to know for sure. What do you recommend I do to fix this? Are more links required? In order for his name to appear in more articles, I would have to add the content to them. Tx, CCcard12 (talk) 13:00, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Craig. You are allowed to remove the {{orphan}} tag if you feel the issue has been suitable dealt with - I'd say, though, that one incoming link was still insufficient - about 3-5 is usually enough. Apart from adding information to other golf-course articles, a simple way to find linkable pages is to do a text search within Wikipedia - type "~Mike Strantz" into the search bar and the extra tilde will cause the software to find all instances of the text string "Mike Strantz". (Actually, don't bother - I'll leave that sentence in as a useful tip for the future, but having just run that search myself, there's only the Mike Strantz page and the wikilink that you added to Forrest Fezler). That said, adding content is nothing to veer away from - there are a number of sources in the Mike Strantz article which could lead you to add text about him to other articles. I'll take a look myself and see if I can do anything to help. Yunshui  13:07, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, I've stuck a link in from Monterey Peninsula Country Club, which is the only one of his courses to currently have an article - a good next step would be to see if any of the other courses listed merit articles of their own. You could well have hit a nice vein of article subjects to mine! Have a quick read of this essay (my distallation of the basics of a first article), and then consider whether you can find sources to support an article on, say, The Caledonia Golf and Fish Club. Let me know if you need a hand. Yunshui  13:22, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
(You could start with [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] and so on...) Yunshui  13:29, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

I would need a hand if I were to attempt to create those articles. I saw that you created that link to Monterey CC, thats great. I deleted Forrest however as Mike was the actual designer. Shall I assume that Mike's page is finished or is there any sense in adding an image to the info box. I've seen this on other pages and wondered if it is something to consider? Ccard12 (talk) 13:36, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

No page is ever "finished" here... there's always some way to improve even a Featured article. Images are always a good thing to have in an article, but you'd need to locate one that was suitable under Wikipedia's copyright licence - see the image use policy for the gory details. Basically, any image would have to be available either under a free licence like CC-BY-SA or under fair use (since Mr Strantz is dead, it wouldn't be possible to create a free image if none already exists). If you have something in mind, let me know the details (where you got it or where it's located on the web) and I'll check it for you. Yunshui  13:41, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

I was thinking of contacting the operator of one of his courses (who I met in the past) and inquiring if they would allow us to use one. I have an image in mind but they are likely the only ones who have the file. I doubt they would have any problem allowing us to use it. Is this something that you recommend I do?Ccard12 (talk) 13:49, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Definitely. This page has some useful examples to show you how to word such a request; just copy and paste the most appropriate one and change the relevent details. Yunshui  13:53, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

OK, I'll do that, thanks alot. After looking over the Monterey page you linked Mike to I noticed a bunch of errors (all kinds) that I'm about to fix. A website advertising Monterey Peninsula golf actually copy and pasted the incorrect information from the Wikipedia article and use it as a feature for the course on their site! Incredible.Ccard12 (talk) 14:26, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

I have secured an image to post on the page and the person who donated it is ok with the CCA Sharealike 3.0 license. Can you tell me what other info I may need from them so I can thank them and sign off. Thanks Ccard12 (talk) 13:38, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Two options - if the image is already available online somewhere, all they need to do is make a statement somewhere at that location to the effect that the image is released under CC-BY-SA. If it's not online, technically they should contact permissions@en-wikipedia.org to confirm that they own the rights to the image and release it under CC-BY-SA terms. However, from a purely practical standpoint, that's not wholly necessary - as long as they're willing to do this if asked, you can go ahead and upload the image. The best place to do so is Wikimedia Commons, the global image repository used by all Wikipedia projects - the upload wizard for Commons is here], although you'll need to create an account there first in order to use it. Let me know how you get on, and then I'll talk you through putting it into the article. Yunshui  13:44, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

I have uploaded the image to Wikipedia Commons and am now at the point where I believe we can upload it. Can you kindly let me know how to proceed. Thanks. Ccard12 (talk) 15:31, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ccard12 - apologies for the tardiness of this reply. If the image has been uploaded to Commons then it's ready to use (what did you call the file? I can't find anything searching for "Mike Strantz" at Commons). Since there's already an infobox template in the article, we can use that to display the image. All you need to do is this:
  1. Go to the Mike Strantz article and open the "Edit" tab.
  2. At the start of the article, you'll see the infobox template; it's the list of parameters under the text {{Infobox architect.
  3. Fill a couple of the empty fields as follows:

    |image = Name of your file.file extension

    |caption = suitable caption, e.g. "Mike Strantz at Monterey Peninsula in 1992".

  4. Save the page.
It's important that you put the file name in correctly - don't put File: or Image: in front of it, and make sure you put the correct extension (.jpg, .png etc.) after it. If you have any trouble, let me know the name of the file and I'll do it for you. Yunshui  08:37, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

I have the file there but perhaps am missing something. The file is Tobacco Road #16. Please tell me what I have done wrong. Appreciate it. Ccard12 (talk) 04:50, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Also, there is bad information on the linked article to Monterey. I tried to fix it by verifying the info from the course GM, but there is no hope. Can I contest what the prior editor wrote? I see no evidence that what they are proclaiming happened, actually happened. I also see other articles with asterisks that signify BS so I'd like to add those if possible seeing as I am encountering alot of false info. Ccard12 (talk) 04:59, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Fixed it for you. You'd copied the URL (website address) from Commons, rather than just the filename (you'd also added curly brackets {{}} around the caption, which causes the software to try and treat it as a template). It's not an ideal image, since biographical articles should be illustrated with pictures of the article subject, rather than their work - this would be better placed in the article text. I will leave it in the infobox for now, though, so you can see how the syntax works (just open the page in Edit mode to see the fomatting).
As for dubious info in the Monterey article, you are more than welcome to contest other editors additions. The usual process for doing so is described as Bold, Revert, Discuss - first, be bold and make the changes you want to see (backing them up with sources if at all possible). If another editor disagrees with the changes, he or she will revert them. At that point, there's a need to discuss the issue, so you should start a conversation on the article's talkpage or on the other editors user talkpage, and explain why you think your version is preferable. Hopefully, you can come to an agreement with the other editor over what wording to use; if not, there are other recourses you can follow. Hope this helps. Yunshui  08:08, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

G6 gone wrong....

I placed a G6 tag on Arthur yin fan, as it has been copied from User:Arthur Fan/sandbox. However, you only did half the job (deleted it, but didn't histmerge it!!) Any reason why, or just a mistake?!? Mdann52 (talk) 19:05, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

To be honest, I deleted the page under G6 and only then took a good look at the sandbox page - it really didn't seem ready for mainspace, so I decided to leave it where it was (I should really have made the deletion under G12, given the circumstances, but it wasn't worth restoring just to change the CSD code). Since there was only one live edit, which was a copyvio, there's no need for a histmerge - any editor could move the page out of the sandbox and into article space: I've now done so in response to your message. It's at Arthur Yin Fan, and it needs some work... Yunshui  08:05, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Gotcha, thanks for the explanation. personally, I don't think they are notable, just my OCD for histmerge taking over!! Mdann52 (talk) 11:01, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
I tidied it up a bit, but there's nothing there worthy of an article; I've sent it to AFD. Yunshui  11:04, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

The article deleted Arthur Yin Fan

Hi, Yunshui,

I am Dr.Arthur Yin Fan. My assistant wrote a bio about me and I posted on my account two days ago. Because we are not familiar to posting an article on Wiki, actually I posted in my user account. Then my assistant saw that problem and re-posted it to Wiki. You deleted that. due to G6 issue.

We do understand the G6 the copy right issue, and I don't like post an article about myself. However, most of scholars do not have habit to post something about others except the scholar in history research. I feel I did not do anything about self advertisement and and everything is true. So, I feel you should allow the scholars to post article about himself or herself as long as there is no anything about the commercial/advertisement.

I have interest in acupuncture and Chinese medicine history research, my assistants and I plan to post some articles in Wiki about the wellknown persons in that scope. We did have several articles published in academic journals.

I hope you could re-install the article about the title "Arthur Yin Fan".

Thanks!

Per the message immediately above, it's now at Arthur Yin Fan (and also at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Arthur Yin Fan). Yunshui  08:06, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Help with knowing what to do in regard to vandalism

Hi Yunshui, I'm coming to you because you have participated as an admin on the Johnny Manziel page. It recently was blanked by 2211mclovin systematically. I have no idea what this person was thinking, but they basically deleted the whole page over a series of edits. An IP (72.172.29.177) user started it, and 2211mclovin finished it. The user's only contribution to Wikipedia has been to delete sections. Nothing constructive whatsoever.

What can be done against this kind of malicious behavior? I looked briefly on various help pages, but the simple answer and action eluded me. Please help me know what to do. Thanks! --BroJohnE (talk) 03:05, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Vandals like this are often fly-by affairs - they visit the page, replace the text with "OMG wikipedai is so gaay" and then are never heard from again. Between ClueBotNG and your own efforts the article has been restored to its previous state, and the 2211mclovin account has been warned. I rather doubt they'll be back. If they do reappear, the most appropriate course of action is to revert them and leave escalating talkpage warnings (in order of severity, these are created by the templates {{uw-vandal1}} (which they received from ClueBotNG) through to {{uw-vandal4}} ("pack it in or get blocked")) - if that doesn't get them to stop, the next step is to file a report at Administrator's intervention against vandalism (WP:AIV), where a passing admin will review the situation and issue appropriate sanctions. Should you find that there are lots of new accounts and/or IP users vandalising the page, it's a simple matter to reinstate semi-protection; either file a report at RPP or just ask me here. I've written an introductory essay about the anti-vandalism process here, you might find it helpful. Yunshui  07:59, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for replying. I'll read the essay. Have a great day! --BroJohnE (talk) 13:22, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Re: Page deletion, "D. Nero Sucio"

i totally understand the reason. but like many people know, no articles on wiki about living figures are actually ever finished. the page was less than 24 hours and i wasnt given enough time to complete it, especially consider i'm the first and only editor of the article. would have been helpful of you to perhaps send me a message notifying me of changes that needed to be made, so as to maybe help me with my article writing.

this article TOTALLY relevant, considering it refers to an artist actively involved within the business, is associated with notable figures, and mentions a historical event, the release of a commercial album.

just need time to finish. please re-consider.

I have replied to your email, but will reiterate here: the page contained no claim that Sucio is notable, and it was therefore deleted under the speedy deletion policy. In addition, you have an evident conflict of interest, and should avoid editing articles relating to Sucio or his music. Yunshui  11:18, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

He removed anything without an inline source. There's nothing wrong with his actions. If you want the material readded, you can find sourcing and then readd it. Help

Hello Mr. Yunshui, I am running into a deliema with this article Koolkart, it has three sources as references from news media but it seems completely like an propaganda, now how to make into a non WP:SOAP crieteria , can i do a AFD ? Shrikanthv (talk) 14:13, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Having taken a look, I wouldn't bother with an AFD. It's not overly promotional in tone (the only line I might take issue with is the "over 40 brands" bit) and the sources are clearly sufficient to pass the notability requirements. There's no real reason to delete it. Even adding an {{advert}} tag might have been excessive.
Since you seem to quite often encounter articles which you think are promotional and I don't, can you give me some idea of what you consider "advertising" in an article? It's clear that you have quite strict personal criteria for promotional writing, and it would help me mentor you if I understood better how you thought about such things. Yunshui  14:24, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Hello Mr Yushui, here was my take. since wiki is an encyclopedia,
  • ) if ther are thousands of business floating in the market and you have the same thing and using wiki to put details of your company across.

why is it newspapers are considered a strong reference sources of creation of article , isnt it possible that the whole newspaper article was paid up by the company and now they start to put wiki articles refering to the this article ?.

may be too much of German laws is also getting into my mind (as they say here that you are guilty unless proven innocent) Shrikanthv (talk) 08:17, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

another article , Arrayshield. now how to do a surgery to this article ? Shrikanthv (talk) 08:32, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

I see; thanks for clearing that up. As far as using newspapers as sources go, we do have to be careful - some sources, like PRWeb, are literally just copies of press releases - but as a rule, we take it on faith that a nationally distributed newspaper like The Times or The Hindu has done basic fact checking on any press release it receives. As a result, if The Times gets a press release from a company or from their PR representative and chooses to turn it into a story, we consider that a reliable source, even if much of the information did in fact originate with the subject themselves.
We do get a lot of non-notable businesses trying to get themselves listed here - I delete about ten or fifteen of them a day, on average - but assuming their language is neutral, these need to be dealt with as non-notable, not as advertising. An article that just consisted of: "RandomCo is a Ukrainian company that makes widgets" would not be deleted under G11 (promotion), but A7 (no claim of notability). On Wikipedia, simply having an article about a company isn't enough to warrant deletion under G11. What you need to look for instead is promotional language or content: if the article says, "RandomCo is the largest supplier of widgets in the Ukraine" and provides a reliable source for the claim, that's perfectly fine. If, on the other hand, it says, "RandomCo are the number one supplier of high-quality widgets in the Ukraine, providing a highly professional service to a vast range of customers", that's advertising, and needs to be scrapped. Facts about a company, if verified by sources, are fine. As a rule of thumb, consider whether or not the text would look out of place on the company's own website; if it reads as though it belongs there, alarm bells should be ringing. Check out Words to avoid as well; many of those tend to crop up in promotional editing, and will often distinguish a puff-piece from a genuine article.
Arrayshield is a good example - there's nothing in there that I would consider "promotion" of the company, and whilst some of the sources do look a lot like press releases (a bit more investigation is needed here), it does seem to me at a casual glance that all the statements therein are verified.
I hope that helps, but feel free to ask for expansion if the above isn't clear. Yunshui  08:45, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
hmm for me to better understand , I will try to write a Page like this myself and will ask for your review Shrikanthv (talk) 13:06, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

A simple question

Hi Yunshui,

Hello! Looking at the different tools that regular editors use, such as Twinkle and Igloo, I wanted to be an editor who used a few of these tools to aid my vandal-fighting job on Wikipedia. I happened to stumble over a tool that's called Huggle, I believe? I gave it a test. I downloaded it form the developer, booted it up, and entered my credentials. And interestingly, a bunch of bits and bobs started loading up.

Alright, sorry for wasting your time. I'll get straight to the point. The window of Huggle informed me that I was required to have Rollbacker rights on Wikipedia in order to be permitted to use Huggle. But this time, rather than foolishly requesting rollbacker rights like I did last time, I was wondering what is expected of me before I could possibly be granted those rights. Cheers, by Kevin12xd Talk to me This was posted at 01:17, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Kevin. Whilst there's no "official" requirement for rollback, most administrators at WP:PERM expect to see the following:
  • A minimum of fifty valid reversions of vandalism in your recent history, including appropriate warnings to users.
  • At least a couple of instances which demonstrate that you understand the difference between good faith edits and vandalism.
  • Few or (ideally) no edits which incorrectly identified good faith edits as vandalism, or warned other users inappropriately - if there are any of these, they should not be recent.
In addition, most admins will give extra consideration to CVUA graduates: your anti-vandalism adoption page is directly taken from the CVUA, so completing that would count in your favour for any future rollback request.
I don't use Huggle myself (I prefer browser-integral tools like Igloo, which is still down...) but I know a number of folk who do use it, and they all give it good reviews. If anti-vandalism is going to be a major focus of your work here, you'd do well to work towards rollback and Huggle permissions; they'll make your task a lot easier. RE: Fixing SineBot Edits

Hi Yun.

I generally remove SineBot's 'preceding unsigned comment' stuff to save space on WP's servers, since I hear that people have problems loading WP pages (and i've experienced it myself when signed in on school computers) I thought it would be a use to the wiki. When I first started doing it on edit pages I did put in edit summaries that if anyone had any problems against it they could let me know and no-one complained so I figured it should be okay, if you think it'll cause trouble then I'll gladly cut it out but, besides taking server space I see that small text as an eyesore. Still if it's causing problems I will cease and desist. Matticusmadness 90.193.192.138 (talk) 15:29, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

It's no problem - I appreciate your attempts to save server space (although I should probably point out that you'd have to correct literally millions of SineBot edits for it to have an appreciable effect on Wikipedia's server load!), and I wasn't in any way requesting that you stop - just curious as to what would motivate someone to do such a tedious task. No-one's going to mind, as long as you don't misattribute anything. Yunshui  21:27, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Yunshui I want you to know that the page i made was not about a "person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), individual animal, or web content", and it is a game I'm making so that is all i can tell anyone except the developersif there is anthing else i did wrong (and I'm sure the is) please tell me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MegamanEX123 (talkcontribs) 22:49, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

I apologise, I made the assumption that an RPG would involve web content. Whilst I could in theory restore it for you, it would be re-deleted almost immediately, because Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. If the game is not even out yet, then it will not have received coverage in any reliable sources, and as such, automatically fails Wikipedia's baseline inclusion requirements. If you still want me to restore it (and then take it to AFD, where it will be deleted and which will make it more difficult to recreate should it ever actually become notable), let me know. New line of warning templates

Hi Yunshui,

I have created a short line of warning templates-I wanted to do a live test run, but I think it would be more appropriate if I asked you first. Here they are:

Cheers, Kevin12xd... | speak up | take a peek | email me 00:45, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Let's see... The level 1 warning is fine, although I'd recommend wikilinking "a recent edit" to the user's contributions (the code to do this is [[Special:Contributions/{{<includeonly>safesubst:</includeonly>BASEPAGENAME}}|a recent edit]]) and possibly linking "in a more constructive manner" to WP:CTW. It might also be an idea to swap out the File:Ambox warning pn.svg icon for something less alarming - the usual level one template uses File:Information.svg.
Don't really have any objections to the level 2 template - we don't normally mention the v-word at level 2, but I personally see no reason not to.
Level 3 could use a "please" at the beginning, I'd link the word "block" as well.
Level 4 - flashing gifs? No thanks. They're rarely used, for good reason - most people with eyes find them immensely irritating. Use File:Stop hand.svg instead; it makes it easier for admins to recognised the severity of the warning at a glance. The text is fine.
The 4im template should link "vandalism" and "block", but is otherwise quite acceptable.
With the above changes, these look as though they'd be okay to use (I actually slightly prefer your level 1 template to the generic one). One thing you might want to do is replace your username in all of these with <includeonly>[[User:{{safesub<noinclude></noinclude>st:REVISIONUSER}}|{{safesub<noinclude></noinclude>st:REVISIONUSER}}]], which will display the username of whoever places the template instead - it means that other editors can use your templates too. Yunshui  08:16, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to budge in but may I recommend that you change "will result in a block" to "may result in a block" as done in Template:Uw-vandalism4im? -- Cheers, Riley 15:59, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
