Alef

I don't understand your last change to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Hebrew).

1. When containing nikud, [א] will be transliterated accordingly and can be any vowel. ← This seems to imply that (for example) לאכול would be transliterated "leeechol" (an "e" for each segol, plus an "e" for the alef). I don't think that can be what you mean?
2. When used as a vowel (em kri'a), will be omitted. ← Properly speaking, alef is never used as a vowel. Also, only in very modern writing has alef become an actual em kri'a in the same way as hei, vav, and yud; in older writing wherever we see an alef it's either because it was actually pronounced , or because it was part of a root where it was usually pronounced. I think it best to describe this in terms of objectively recognizable properties (specifically, lacking a vowel or sheva) than to pull in terminology that not everyone will agree with.
3. When followed by another vowel or a consonant with a shva, will be preceded by an apostrophe ('). ← I guess what you mean is that the alef will be written as an apostrophe (rather than "preceded" by one), but going by the discussion on the talk-page, it doesn't seem that we have consensus about this.

1. That way to look at it could potentially make sense, but it's not how we're describing the other letters. We're not saying that lamed should be written <l>, <la>, <le>, <li>, <lo>, or <lu>, depending on whether it has a vowel and if so what it is; rather, we're saying that it should be written <l>, and its vowel (if it has one) should be written after it. Hence, alef should be written <'> in some cases — it is preceded by the previous letter's vowel, and followed by its own vowel, and it itself is an apostrophe.
2. That's how we describe it today, but to people more versed in ancient grammar, that's not how it really is. Those alefs weren't added as emot kri'a; when those words were first written, the alef was actually pronounced (as an unreleased glottal stop). Final alefs later became silent, such that they came to seem to be equivalent to final heis (which were always silent), and so now we view them as emot kri'a in the same way that final heis are; but people more versed in ancient grammar won't see it that way, and it's better to use objective terminology that doesn't depend on people's viewpoint.

Hi Ynhockey. Sorry, but I've reverted your change to the lang-he template (and noted why on the Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Hebrew) page). The new style just doesn't look right - for one it is too big and it also looks too blocky. I think the style we already had was fine - it fits in nicely with the general Wikipedia style (and is what he.wikipedia uses). Number 57 14:45, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

The only source for the Prison Guard Company was globalsecurity and I wondered myself what good just one Prison Guard Company does, with thousands of militants in prison... If you think it does not belong here I will remove it- if you have more info on units of the various commands let me know and I will add or remove them.

Re: In the graphic the Erez and Taoz Battalions are subordinated to the Central Command… this info is based on globalsecurity too. One can't say that Israel has the most open minded approach to revealing information on its military, for quite understandable reasons. As such, noclador here did a fantastic job compiling information from various sources that are all trustworthy (and which all have to face the fortress mentality of the IDF). However, none of us is Israeli in general and Tsahal serviceman in particular and our information is limited to what we can find in the languages we speak. Re: Mazi: My information says that the Mazi is being organized to become a full fledged Arm of the IDF- meaning that all Ground units and also the Southern, Central, Northern and Homefront Command will be under its direct command in the future. i.e. in the graphic you sent me the Logistics and Medical Directorate is still a command on its own, whereas in this graphic from the French military magazine "Raids" it is now subordinate to the Mazi and globalsecurity says: "Logistics & Medical Directorate (ATAL)(Maj General)(recently moved to MAZI control)". From what I know this process is still ongoing and not yet complete.

the graphic you sent me remembers me of the Inspectorate organization of the Italian Army and the Corps organization of the German Army- which are both responsible to provide the actual combat units with recruits, material and training, but do not participate or contribute in any way to operations- but the organization of the operative units is the interesting part and in my graphic I try to show these units as they do fight in operations. Therefore I think the structure is correct, but I also believe that there are still many units missing (the IDF Ground Forces strength is 125.000 men and assuming that a battalion has 600men there should be around 30-40 battalions more, about which I can not find any info... or the Ground Force isn't 125.000 strong.)

Its getting out of hand. Now Hartebeest and Artist Formerly Known As Whocares have merged several articles. I do know there is something called WP:BOLD but its gone too far. Just realized something

My source is someone within Ground Forces Command (Mazi) and the info he gave me on all units, branches and forces of the IDF was very detailed and almost completeye confirmed by gloablsecurity. I believe that this is a very good source- especially as it had info about everything and anything. Also it is much more interesting to see the operational structure of an Army (the one it is going to war with) than the administrative structure. --noclador 17:43, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Bleach pages

I support a certain amount of the merging (we really didn't need a separate page on Yama's lieutenant, for instance), but you're right, it's definitely getting out of hand now. Merging without any regard for the end product actually being readable is far far worse than even the most overly subdivided case.

However, since I'm currently incredibly busy IRL (moving into my college dorm at the end of this week) and WP:FICT is in the middle of a serious rewrite attempt (which I'm trying to ensure doesn't end up contradicting itself), I haven't been doing too much to stop the merging. My apologies, I'll try to pay more attention to it, and definitely give the entire article set a good look-over once WP:FICT has settled down. --tjstrf talk 20:47, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

First of all, I know exactly the purpose to Babel, that yes, it helps to find translators. Second, "creating the template doesn't mean "it's already created,"" then why was it created? Third, you proved my point, to say "This user can contribute" at xx-5, is faulty because you aren't contributing to this Wikipedia, you are contributing to the other WPs, and if xx-5 should be used for translating, then it should say "This user can professionally use and translate "language" to/from English." or something like that. Vandalism at Israel Defense Forces ranks

Hi Ynhockey, the guy that is vandalizing Israel Defense Forces ranks is Wikipedia:Long term abuse/Roitr wikipedias worst vandal... he is from Russia and lives in Israel now. As Bezeq does refuse to stop him, we have to deal with him... at least: if you mention the name to some administrators, they will ban his IP address immediately. That does not help as Bezeq immediately assigns him a new one (those fu...). Go to Wikipedia:Long term abuse/Roitr to learn more about him... if you have an idea how to stop him, please do something, as three emails from me (and dozens from other users) to Bezeq have had 0 results. --noclador 21:36, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Well, maybe he was nice to you, but I do not believe that this user wants to contribute - over time: he vandalized thousands of pages, insulted dozens of users and admins, vandalized userpages and uploaded dozens of fake rank insignias - therefore he has been banned forever. The orders about him are: "Block on sight, revert any changes, delete POV forks". (see Wikipedia:Long term abuse/Roitr

His worst month of action was June 2007, when he vandalized a page every 2 minutes. After threatening Bezeq with a block on all their IP addresses, Roitr disappeared. Now he is back and there is 0 tolerance regarding him (as agreed by the entire adminship of the english wiki). If he continues his vandalism than a call to Bezeq might really help (calls are always taken more serious than emails), but I agree with you, that for now, we do not need to take action yet, but if he returns to the vandalism level shown in June, action must be taken!

If he does do some vandalism from a specific IP address you can report him to the Administrators intervention against vandalism group by copying the following line into Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism and entering his IP (this will get the specified IP blocked for a month):

In the end, it all boils down to the same pattern: he reads and misinterprets something, then starts inserting his misinterpretation to the articles, providing no viable proof, then starts using sockpuppets to evade protects and blocks. This behaviour is clearly a serious vandalism and he really p!ssed admins off when he used about 15 sockpuppets in a single evening to upload several dozen counterfeit images. Hey, me and HanaIchi have been talking about Aizen's status. Now, I know you and I showed our lists back on the the Talkpage for List of Bleach Characters, that once December has aired the English dub, that we rename the Arrancarr section "Antagonists" and move Aizen, Gin and Tosen there. Now, I want to know that can us three and everyone else reach an agreement that once the dub airs, we perform that course of action? MP's in the IDF

MP's are generally not highly regarded by combat units, mainly because they (combat soldiers) will receive a citation for poor appearance, etc. When I was doing reserves in the Jordan Valley they sent us some MP's so the MP's could see what combat soldiers do. I took them on a patrol along the river. We saw a snake, and I took a few shots at it. The MP next to me put his M-16 on full automatic and charged the snake, riddling it with bullets. Yes, you are correct, there is apparently a lot of difference between the MP's of my time 30 years ago and what you do today. A little background...

Raful took over as Chief of Staff in 1978, and was determined to return discipline to the IDF after many stupid accidents. He ordered all soldiers to wear their berets. Previously, we had worn them under the shoulder epaulette. Well, of course the MP’s had a field day giving out new citations to all the soldiers they could catch who were not wearing berets.

One day Raful himself was riding in his staff car when he saw a soldier who was not wearing his beret. He rolled down his window and called for the soldier to come over. The solider saw it was Raful and fled. Raful sent one of his staff officers to chase the soldier. Tumbalaleika

You have recently removed a translation of the song of tumbaleika. I speak Yiddish fluently as it is my mother toung. The reason I put it the alternative translation is because alhtough it is not a literal translation it can be sang in the same tume as tumbalaeika and have roughly the same meaning. This is perfectly acceptable, such as "The Internationale" which is translated in many languages, is not a literal translation. So if someone wants to sing the Tumbalaleika in English, he/she can do so and this song has been sang on an offical recording in English. You made a personal attack on the user on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents‎ (calling the edits "vandalism") and on this talk (calling the user "crazy"). He or she was removing an utterly improper edit from an anonymous editor that defined Efrat in the lead sentence as an "illegal" Israeli settlement. If anyone wants to know about the status and controversies over Israeli settlements they can follow the links and read up on them. To tag each article about a settlement to call it "illegal" in the lead sentence would be absurd. That kind of contentious WP:POV editing has no place on Wikipedia. Actually you got some of those recategorizations wrong. The date for Israel's creation refers to the borders as established by the UN partition plan in 1947. In the subsequent war, much fighting occurred outside those borders, until an armistice was drawn, and new boundaries determined. Some incidents occurring outside the UN sanctioned borders do not refer to Israel as it is today constituted, but to the areas outside Israel's May 15 boundaries, in areas marked out for an Arab state. Some of these areas were later incorporated into Israel (1967). Your judgements on categories appear to ignore these temporal distinctions. Cheers Nishidani (talk) 16:16, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

The problem is best solved by simply creating a category (Israeli)Massacres of Palestinians (and, correspondingly, (1) Palestinian massacres of Israelis (2)Palestinian massacres of Jews), since geographical fluidity of borders in the area is notorious. The 1948 massacres are badly distributed because the formal ceasefire lines, and national boundaries as established through territorial gains, and settled by armistice agreements, occurred a full year afterwards. In the conceptual confusion one is going to get (1) Category of Palestinian massacres in 1948 (2) Category of massacres of Palestinians in Israel (3) Category of massacres of Palestinians in the Jordanian West Bank (4)(5) (6) etc etc. Morris provides for example documentation showing Eilabun as outside Israel 1948, as that was defined in intelligence papers. Hey, sorry to be a bother but I have another list of info needed for the Shagor article. I'm basically trying to prepare it for a peer review for perhaps GA-Status. The most alarming issue is the politics section of the town I just made (I just relocated existing text to a more appropriate section). The boycott issue between Majd al-Krum and Deir al-Asad does exist as residents of the city have told me this when I visited there two summers ago. However there is no document (as far as I can see) to back this or any source to inform us whether the problem persists today. I'm not sure if the ICBS has any info on that, if not it is understandable. The list of additions for other sectors is

• The number of 12th grade students that received matriculate certificates
• Weather averages
• Sports teams if any
• Any source of history before 1948 War. (I couldn't find anything on the Shaghur, obviously because it was founded in 2003.
