Animation production length

[edit]

Heya, I saw the edit volley going on at The Legend of Korra and I thought I'd poke my nose in to help.

Matt Groening says of the Simpsons: "It takes 6-8 months to do one episode."
Pendleton Ward says of Adventure Time: "I can tell you it it’s about nine months per episode. But in animation, everything’s sort of overlapping all at the same time."

The Simpsons might be faster because they have a bigger budget and more animators than Korra. Adventure Time might be faster for other reasons. But that production overlap is key. An animated episode goes through this basic process: writing, recording, the director's visualization process, storyboarding, background art, editing animatics, studio approvals, studio disapprovals, re-writing, re-recording dialogue, revising drawings, re-editing animatics, the actual animation, special effects, compositing, looping, sound effects, and sound mix. Recording doesn't start until the writing is done. Animatics may not start until the recording's done, etc. The reason why it doesn't take ten years to produce one season of Korra, is because it's an assembly line, and because as Ward said, everything overlaps.

Writing kicks off the process. If it takes one month to finish a script, the writers don't just go home for 10 months--they move onto the next script just as the recording studio takes the baton. So if Korra Ep1 writing begins January 1, then ten months of production will finish the ep by October 31. Ep12 writing would start December 1 and the entire 12-episode season of Korra would be finished by that following September 30th. Did this help at all?  :) Whoops i change your signing by accident if you see this can you put your name for i can reply back.

Reminder: make sure the deal goes through and is properly sourced before putting it in the article

[edit]

I've reverted your edits to Jason Kidd because they are not backed up by reliable sources. Although Kidd is widely reported to be heading to the Bucks, the deal isn't final, nor is his exact position with the club, so it's premature to change the infobox. —C.Fred (talk) 23:42, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
