Math formatting

[edit]

Please see MOS:MATH, and especially the subsection MOS:FORMULA, for guidance about formatting mathematics on Wikipedia. In particular, please don't put entire equations (numbers, symbols, and all) into italics; that's not how proper math formatting is done anywhere. 100.36.106.199 (talk) 20:41, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Anywhere": most mathematicians write in LaTex or in other math languages that use a single math formatting (in italics by the way), and not a variety of (excuse me, but) irrelevant options such that ' ' ' ' or \<math> or {{ math etc.
I'm still eager to adapt, but I need to know which edit needs to be corrected. Trashyyy (talk) 21:55, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
LaTeX does not place symbols (like parentheses and equal signs) or digits in italics; no one ever anywhere has done so as a standard practice. Your edit here does so repeatedly. Please read MOS:FORMULA to learn about appropriate options for formatting mathematics on Wikipedia. 100.36.106.199 (talk) 02:20, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Has you ever read a mathematical paper? Have you ever written in LaTeX? Do you know what italics does mean?
I'm currently writing in LaTex (right now), with the maths in italics... as in most (all?) the mathematical documents of my academic formation and in most "modern" maths papers...
I you do not know, do not affirm randomly please... Trashyyy (talk) 10:46, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(I took inspiration from articles such as this one for example, where this is done quite often. But thanks for the information and the links). Trashyyy (talk) 10:48, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've read your link: see my comment below (which shows that you're recommendation is negated by this very link by the way...) Trashyyy (talk) 10:49, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently I have made a mistake in believing that you were a competent person here in good faith. I will not make that mistake in the future. Meanwhile, I suggest you use your great depth of LaTeX knowledge to reflect on whether \textit{(} (a parenthesis in italics) looks the same as $($ (a parenthesis in math mode). After you’ve realized your error, you can perhaps consider also what is wrong with you that causes you to act in such an unpleasant way in response to helpful suggestions from a much more experienced mathematics editor. 100.36.106.199 (talk) 12:03, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, I don't need you. Nor do I need the other YOU's. Trashyyy (talk) 15:06, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For inline formulae, such as a2 − b2, the community of mathematical editors of English Wikipedia currently has no consensus about preferred formatting Trashyyy (talk) 22:08, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is an extract from one of your links Trashyyy (talk) 22:09, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I would be more at ease if I could write in Tex only (i.e <math>), is it acceptable ? Trashyyy (talk) 22:13, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. 100.36.106.199 (talk) 02:21, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
