Possibilities!
So many things I look forward to discussing and prioritizing with you.
Is this something we can talk about? https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Project_Leaflets
- This is good question for Lane (User:Bluerasberry) since its for Wikimania conference in London this year. Tinkermen (talk) 22:05, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
And I wanted to get your review of this! http://metalearninghabits.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/wikipedia-assignments-1-2-handout.pdf DrMel (talk) 20:49, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- Not my area of expertise but this looks well laid out for students, Antoinette (User:Alafarge) would have a better Opinion I would trust though. Tinkermen (talk) 22:05, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hello, is there something you need? Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:01, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hi. Not sure you want my opinion, but I do think this looks like a good starter handout. Two things did catch my eye, and I'll just comment on them here but understanding that I don't know the context of this handout, so what I say may be quite off base. One, I always recommend newbies use a pseudonymous login; it's much easier to take criticism and advice and occasional trolling under a pseudonym while learning. Once they're confident, they can always go ahead and make a real-name account if they want to for reputational reasons. Two, I find that if I just tell new editors to "find a page they like" to work on, they tend to head for big-subject pages (Star Wars, Jane Austen) that have been edited to death and are heavily patrolled, meaning they either can't readily find something to do on that page, or their edit quickly goes out the window. It helps if you can advise them a bit on how to find more obscure corners of the wiki world to poke around in. Anyway, good luck to you!Alafarge (talk) 17:11, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the replies! Here's the vision I'm holding:
What if all research assignments given in school included "contributions to Wikipedia/wikiHow" as part of the graded work?
Alafarge - I totally agree on both points! I regularly recommend people choose pseudonyms, even though I didn't. And the point re: "any page" is well taken - we found ~25 students suddenly editing the Serial Murder page when we first tried this, and saw the comments from a very confused editor! ;-)
I haven't updated the handout in years but am happy to gift it into this space and let anyone modify the worksheets.
If there was one pamphlet I'd most love to see people taking home from London, it'd be one that they could reprint as needed and give out to non-Wikipedia editors, inviting them to take the first steps toward contributing instead of just consuming what's here, with a clear step-by-step for beginners to cover their first steps. I've got a whole chunk of related stuff for wikiHow, whom I've worked more closely with over the last two years (http://www.wikihow.com/User:Melissaganus). All of that is free to use and adapt as well. http://m.wikihow.com/Contribute-Your-Expertise-to-wikiHow-(for-Academics).
My reality check on what I can and can't do atm - I would LOVE to be in a situation where I could jump in and play a major role in putting pamphlets together, but I'm going to be on the road for the next 4 weeks (sadly missing wikiMania), so couldn't take lead on getting much done. If any of what I've already done is useful, please let me know! I'd be happy to discuss all the results we've seen from doing this so far with anyone, but probably need to make that a phone call or email exchange because I'll be on Wikipedia so infrequently... — Preceding unsigned comment added by DrMel (talk • contribs) 17:02, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

Review of changes to Don Norman article?
Hi John! Thanks for encouraging me to work on this one. I have not yet spoken directly with Don, but was able to do a little updating and cleanup of the article, with a link to an article in San Diego Union Tribune. Could you take a look? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Norman
- Reads sorta like a resume, needs more personal stories and arranged like these Bio's; Allan M. Collins, Elizabeth Bates, Virginia Satir
Next step is to create a new article for The Design Lab at UCSD. Not sure what article name I should use. Would https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Design_Lab_at_USCD make sense? Here's a link to their homepage: http://designlab.ucsd.edu/
- The Design Lab is a newly established organization, probably wouldn't pass WP:ORG, if you wrote it though it will be like these; The Earth Institute, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Georgia Institute of Technology College of Architecture
Thanks! DrMel (talk) 21:31, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Hope that was helpful, rather a downer reply on my part sorry. Tinkermen - John Francis
