Disambiguation

I see you have been making a lot of disambiguation changes. Are you using any bot or doing it manually? I'd love to know. Coderzombie (talk) 13:31, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

I am using Dab solver on mainly India related topics. Tachs (talk) 13:38, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Linking

Hi, you made various links in this edit. how do you know, for example, that the Kongad (gram panchayat) corresponds to the Lok Sabha constituency? Sharing the same name means nothing in this context because boundaries vary widely. - Sitush (talk) 08:50, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Thanks for the message. Kongad is a village in Palakkadu District of Kerala, India, and the lok sabha consituency covers the Gram Panchayath and neighbouring areas. However, Kongad gram panchayath is the center of the consituency. In India, many lok sabha consitituencies cover extensive areas but are named after the principal city/town/village coming under the consituency. An example is Chalakudy consituency, which was formed taking parts of Mukundapuram and Ernakulam consituencies, but covering Aluva, Perumbavoor and other areas.. A reference to the name of the principal area gives information about the area, though not necesarily related to political elections. You may please remove the link, if deemed inappropriate Tachs (talk) 09:09, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Strange edits

A lot of your recent edits have resulted in replacing all the square brackets in the article with a hash (#). For example [1] I have reverted a few but did not attempt to check every one of your edits. Periglio (talk) 01:44, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Yesterday, while I was using Dabsolver, errors were popping up while saving the edits. Guess these errors must have been a result of it. Thanks for bringing it to notice which will help if the same problem crops up again. jojo@nthony 06:19, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi Tachs, I've just deleted this image as, unfortunately, the licence is incorrect. Google's image search may have lead you astray. The source website has text at the bottom stating "Copyright 2001-2009 AACR-Association of American for Civic Responsibility. All Rights Reserved." which means the image is not in the public domain - Peripitus (Talk) 12:15, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi Peripitus, as you rightly said, Google search misled me. Thanks for your assistance. jojo@nthony 14:36, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

May 2014 disambig contest: let's do it again!

Greetings fellow disambiguator! Remember back in February when we made history by clearing the board for the first time ever, for the monthly disambiguation contest? Let's do it again in May! I personally will be aiming to lead the board next month, but for anyone who thinks they can put in a better effort, I will give a $10 Amazon gift card to any editor who scores more disambiguation points in May. Also, I will be setting up a one-day contest later in the month, and will try to set up more prizes and other ways to make this a fun and productive month. Cheers! bd2412 T 18:50, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Wikilinking

Hi, and thanks for your work on the English Wikipedia.

I noticed an article you worked on. Just a short note to point out that we don’t normally link:

  • dates
  • years
  • commonly known geographical terms (including well-known country-names), and
  • common terms you’d look up in a dictionary (unless significantly technical).

This even applies to infoboxes.

Also, flags need special justification. And listing children's names normally only if they themselves are notable.

Thanks, and my best wishes.

Tony (talk) 13:31, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Tony. The advice will guide me in my future work. A parenthetical reference; the daughter of Leela Omchery, Deepti Omchery Bhalla, is a well known dancer and singer and has an article of her own in Wikipedia. Thanks once again. jojo@nthony (talk) 14:21, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello Tachs! Thank you so much for you help in correcting my Eugénie Le Brun article and getting it published! I really appreciate your help :)

I have also written an article about Ma'ruf al-Rusafi. It is currently in my sandbox, do you know how I could get that article for approval as well? I no longer have the option to submit.

I see you accepted this at AfC. I am afraid IMHO this is a promotional bio of a non-notable person and tagged it as such. If you'd like to defend it, we can take it to AfD. Cheers, --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:25, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Piotr, apologise for my late revert, I am travelling. I accepted the article on the basis of two premises; (a) The citations in the article and my own searches returned adequate references, (b) the branch of science the subject of the article practices was worth of notice from an encyclopedic perspective. I believe an encyclopedia is a reservoir of knowledge where the access is through search and not by random reading and as such, any worthwhile piece of information should not be denied space. Cheers jojo@nthony (talk) 07:53, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
I understand where you are coming from. I consider myself an inclusion, but I do resent certain spam-creep, particularly promotional one. We will see what the community decides here, maybe people will find that he is notable enough. Coverage in independent sources, now mostly lacking from the article, would help. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:13, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Piotr for the exchanges, they have been constructive. Cheers! jojo@nthony (talk) 08:20, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Master-at-Arms (United States Navy)

I understand that there already a Master-at-Arms article, but there is so much more to the U.S. Navy MAs. Currently there has been input that there is too much on the U.S. not making it balanced. Sieben Linden Ecovillage

Hi Tachs, thanks for commenting on my draft for an article about Sieben Linden Ecovillage. You declined the draft as to stubbish. My idea was to establish this page which is long overdue and then expand it over time with the help of other editors. There is a lot to write as Sieben Linden is an internationally renowned community project, easily comparable to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Findhorn or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZEGG_%28community%29 - I just don't have the time to do it all at once and also I want to be very careful with it since I am an inhabitant of that place and wouldn't want to impose any subjective impressions on Wikipedia users. Do you really suggest that I only sumbit the article when most of the facts are included? Thanks for an answer!

Mike Herbst77regen (talk) 18:30, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Mike, appreciate your intentions. My action was purely based on wiki standards of reviewing. Please resubmit the draft with a request message for collaborative effort and I would also be glad to put in my little mite to help evolve a good article. Cheers !! --jojo@nthony (talk) 03:28, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

All the seven references were print media reports, six of them were by Indian born reporters, four of them in Indian publications and one is about promoting Singapore, than about the company. The promoter of the business being an Indian, it is natural to get attention from local media. The company, for being young may be, lacked any achievement citations, too. Thought further references would make the article more plausible which I had noted down as comments. --jojo@nthony (talk) 14:26, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello Tachs. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Proposed deletion of Brooklyn Melodies Music Centre

The article Brooklyn Melodies Music Centre has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Music school for children. Not a degree granting institution

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. DGG ( talk ) 19:04, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

if you can find the sources, please put it in again. Perhaps some of the music education magazines talk about it in context. DGG ( talk ) 09:35, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

Review of Larry Potterfield's Wiki Page

Good afternoon,

Thank you for your time reviewing the Wikipedia page we have submitted for Larry Potterfield. I sincerely appreciate your feedback and look forward to discussing your recommended changes. I've never written anything encyclopedic, but have been asked to create this page for our Founder and CEO. Based on feedback from you and Darylgolden I have made several changes to the original draft. I would sincerely appreciate any feedback you might give me to help me get this page created. Thanks again for your help. (the draft is located here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Larry_Potterfield) Cauleycw (talk) 19:28, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi Mate, the problem with the article is, first of all, its promotional tone. As you very well know, an encyclopedic article just states facts and does not engage in eulogizing. Your article glorifies the subject which has to be toned down. The second issue is the structure. What you have done is quite correct but placement of details needs to be corrected. For eg. you have inserted too many unnecessary details in the lead section. I would suggest you first tone down the article to acceptable levels and then we may work on the other aspects. Happy editing!!--jojo@nthony (talk) 05:17, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
Good afternoon - I've removed what I think might have been considered the promotional tone from most of this article. Also, I've tried to model the article similar to the article on William B. Ruger (another gentleman in our industry). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_B._Ruger. I certainly appreciate your help in moving me closer to getting this approved. More work has to be done, I guess. If you wish to, I can make a few more edits to take out most of the promo usages.--jojo@nthony (talk) 05:47, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
I would certainly appreciate the help! I know Larry personally so what I write may come off as biased, it is unintentional; thank you for your help and feedback. 66.112.44.198 (talk) 19:17, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
I have done a bit of copyediting, check it out at your convenience. Guess you may now take it to User:Darylgolden for reviewing, as per his advice. Would appreciate if you leave me a message once it is reviewed.--jojo@nthony (talk) 08:23, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks so much for your help! I'll be sure to reply here once it has been reviewed for approval. 66.112.44.198 (talk) 14:25, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello Tachs. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "T. Kaladaran".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/T. Kaladaran}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save page", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. HasteurBot (talk) 00:00, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Panangipalli Venugopal

Thanks for creating this article. Most information is pretty accurate, except a few details:

1. Dr. Venugopal is no longer a bachelor. He married Ms. Priya Sarkar, daughter of Bidyut Sarkar(deceased, former editor of Economic Times) on 15th August 1996. He has a seventeen year old daughter named Saiansha. You may contact his daughter on Facebook for more information. Links (dating 2010) that attest to that:

http://www.timescrest.com/coverstory/the-godfather-4756

http://archive.tehelka.com/story_main44.asp?filename=hub200310where_the.asp

2. He is no longer working with Alchemist. For the time being, he is involved with St. Stephens Hospital, Gurgaon.

3. On October 20th, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi felicitated Dr. P. Venugopal with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 42nd AIIMS Convocation 2014. These awards were started this year. Venugopal was the only exception to the rule that only doctors aged 75 and above would be eligible to receive this award. Link to the article:

http://www.aninews.in/videogallery4/29308-pm-narendra-modi-attends-aiims-convocation-function.html

4. It will be good if you can upload an appropriate photo of Venugopal.

5. He also received the Best Graduate Gold Medal from former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for academic excellence.

6. Perhaps you can also list his work in setting up the super specialty Sathya Sai Baba hospitals in Puttaparthi and Bangalore in Karnataka. 117.220.64.144 (talk) 16:37, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

I have already added a few more details with the links you have provided me. The information without reliable reference were avoided as Wikipedia advises against it. The same is the case with the photograph as no free image of Venugopal is available.--jojo@nthony (talk) 16:42, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

help creating an article

Hello Tachs,

Recently read an article created by you on scientist/researcher. I was wondering whether you'd be willing to help create another such article on a well-known researcher/scientist. I was planning to create one but I'm sure you'd do a much better job given your experience! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Researcherscience (talkcontribs) 19:43, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

I will try. Please let me know. If the person is notable, I would only be happy to help. --jojo@nthony (talk) 10:19, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi - would be great if you can create it for D. D. Sarma (or Dipankar Das Sarma) - he has won numerous awards across nationally in India as well as internationally: he is linked from the renowned H K Firodia Awards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H_K_Firodia_awards) under "Last awardee" along with MS Narasimhan, from the Bhatnagar awards page clicking it gives (clicking either gives https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dipankar_Das_Sarma), and is one of the notable students of C.N.R.Rao and prominent scientists in India and recognized internationally. Just some of his many accomplishments/awards are listed from his downloadable CV in his homepage: https://sscu.iisc.ernet.in/DDSarma/our-group-dd-sarma.html and has several very recent big accomplishments (which I presume will get added by other folks once the main page is created). Let me know. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.113.160.77 (talk) 20:04, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Dipankar Das Sarma is notable enough. I will try to create an article but would require a few days as I am travelling. Once I have created it, will leave a note here.--jojo@nthony (talk) 12:00, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

07:05:23, 21 February 2015 review of submission by Mouthwash15

Hi there, I re-formatted the references here to conform to the preferred citation standard.

I believe the article is solid on all counts: as a bio of a living person, it's written in neutral POV, with material drawn from long-form profiles of the subject in major news sources (Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker).

Please let me know if there's anything I ought to revisit here. Very much appreciated! Mouthwash15 (talk) 07:05, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

I have made it compact by rearranging the single sentence paragraphs. Removing some of the quotations would help to wipe put the promotional tone. As per wikipractice, I should now leave it to another reviewer to make a decision on the draft as I have already done a bit work and have made comments on it. All the best!!--jojo@nthony (talk) 07:45, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

Thank you again. Cheers — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mouthwash15 (talkcontribs) 19:39, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Mahesh Raj Soni, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Craftsman. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Just a quick note

Hey. I noticed that you have a small misunderstanding of the page title when citing sources. For example while siting this source in this article, you have mentioned the title of the page as boloji while it actually is Professor K. Swaminathan: A Himalayan Professor and Savant. It seems you misunderstood the title of the page as title of the publication. Please take care of this. Cheers and have a good day, ƬheStrikeΣagle 19:33, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi friend, it is not that I did not notice the title, it was deliberately put like that. While creating an article, my way of doing it is to gather all the references I could and then add the citations as I write the article so that I don't miss out on any citation. Since subsequent citations carry only the title, I normally assign a title which I can recognize easily. This helps in adding citations in an easier manner. Inline references always point to the full citation details in the reference section, and I thought it would not make much of a difference. Cheers!!--jojo@nthony (talk) 05:53, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script.
