Costa Rica map files

[edit]

Your map is great. Can you make the data files available? I would like to use it as a base map for another project I'm working on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bmatulis (talkcontribs) 00:50, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:0screencap 4.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:0screencap 4.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 17:26, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Espoo

[edit]

Hi there. Regarding you reverting my edit on the artice on Espoo, could you kindly instruct me where to further study the policy regarding "the infobox design that has been established in all the other articles relating to Finnish cities/municipalities" please? –Zinjixmaggir 17:44, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I did have a look at the articles on other Finnish cities and noticed that not many of them have been built using templates, so I made an effort to correct that. I believe the information I left out can either still be included in the infobox or portrayed in the body copy instead. Furthermore, the template I used is also in use on the articles on several of the world's major cities and I think it fits a city better. Or do you know of a still better template to use? –Zinjixmaggir 18:28, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If there is a reason for building infoboxes using static markup instead of a template I haven't understood what it is. I think that approach contradicts with the idea of uniform design by making the set of articles non-structured and difficult to alter afterwards. Maybe there could be a specific template for Finnish cities – one that would enable the embedding of photos too?
I've taken the conversation to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Finland for further comments, I suggest we continue there. –Zinjixmaggir 16:38, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:0screencap 4.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:0screencap 4.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Aksibot 00:55, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Quirquiña

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Quirquiña, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. tomasz. 18:07, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly I won't be reverting your edit for a third time. However, your initial edit replaced a neutral map of the Tibetan plateau with a highly POV map of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), which is not what the article is about. The map you added is perfectly relevant to the Tibet Autonomous Region article where it is not a POV map. But on the Tibet article you initially removed a neutral map and replaced it with a highly POV map. Which is why it was reverted back to a neutral one. Also, when you say in your edit summary that "It's still a map of Tibet, and a very detailed one," - no it isn't, it is a map of the TAR, not Tibet, and the article is about Tibet not the TAR. And regardless of the detail involved it is still a POV map about the TAR and not just Tibet. ♦Tangerines BFC ♦·Talk 21:37, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that placing a map of the TAR in an article about historical and cultural Tibet is highly questionable. Tibet and the TAR are not synonymous and therefore having that map there looks like a snipe at the people of Tibet. It's inflammatory and inappropriate and I will revert it back again. If you have any questions or concerns about this issue, please address them on the talk page and not in the edit line of the article's history. Thank you. You voted at the Chibi Afd, but you did not give a reason for your vote. As it is a debate as well as a vote, your vote may not be considered without a rationale. You may want to come back and give a quick explanation. The discussion is here. Cheers. JohnnyMrNinja 18:33, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate images uploaded

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bengali-world.png. A machine-controlled robot account noticed that you also uploaded the same image under the name Image:Bengalimap-Nov2006.png. The copy called Image:Bengalimap-Nov2006.png has been marked for speedy deletion since it is redundant. If this sounds okay to you, there is no need for you to take any action.

This is an automated message- you have not upset or annoyed anyone, and you do not need to respond. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and refer to 'my contributions' to remind yourself exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads. For tips on good file naming, see Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions about this notice, or feel that the deletion is inappropriate, please contact User:Staecker, who operates the robot account. Staeckerbot 20:46, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Namwon

[edit]

Hey Zakuragi, it's nice to know that you are interested in WikiProject Korea (your request at talk page, & the 3 icons on your user page--> this conclusion)! Sadly I couldn't make out the captions in any of the pics for the Namwon article. I can put really generic summaries like "vegetation in Namwon with apartment buildings in the behind" but that just is not worth the effort. There were some pics that made me think of parks (for exercise, etc.) but I can't guess.

Anyways, I can guess that your name "Zakuragi" is based on your interest in Japanese anime? Are you of Caucasian ethnicity b/c that would give me more of a surprise (although not dramatic)? See you around. (Wikimachine 03:24, 7 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Locator map Netherlands

[edit]

While I have no opinion about this I would like to notify you that the argument you use (similar map is in use elsewhere) is a very weak argument. By tireless putting up specific versions of maps, and bullying others into acceptance using this argument a certain "critical mass" can be built that overwhelms editors who are honestly trying to achieve a consensus based on arguments. Basically this is how the old Orange maps gained their dominance. As I said I have no opinion on these maps, so I don't mind, but IMHO editors who revert may use an argument like mine. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:RepretelCanal11.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:RepretelCanal11.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 18:38, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The index

[edit]

Thanks; I've put a lot of work into the index, and am pretty pleased with the results.

I agree that it should be in Wikipedia namespace; my goal is to move it there by the end of November. (That's not an arbitrary date; I'm working my way through the index, and that sometimes results in rearranging topics; I will be done sometime around the end of November, and then I'm happy to have others contribute whatever they want to maintaining the index. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 22:31, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Aragon

[edit]

The medieval kingdom of Aragon is coextensive with the modern autonomous community of Aragon, in Spain. It's a landlocked region, which has never included Catalonia, Valencia or the Balearic Islands, all of which where different kingdoms in the crown of Aragon. --Jotamar 13:46, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Urdu

[edit]

Hi,

There's a big difference between all the Hindi dialect chain and Standard Hindi. The article Hindi languages classifies Urdu as one of those dialects, which is correct and contradicts the map, so I'm just clarifying that point. That's not the same as saying that Urdu is a dialect of Standard Hindi. Indeed, it would be more correct to say that Standard Hindi is a register of Urdu. (Right now Standard Hindi redirects to Khariboli, but that's not quite correct: you could say the same about Urdu.) kwami (talk) 18:32, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map

[edit]

Hi. I really really like your map Image:Hindidialects.png. However I think that there are still some issues and stuff that needs to be worked out. Listed–

  • What is your source?
  • Why is Nepal blanked out? Awadhi, Bhojpuri, and Maithili are spoken in its southern lip.
  • What you've done with Urdu is inaccurate, first regarding the colouring as kwami has noted (it'd fall under Western Hindi), but really more importantly your positioning it over Pakistan and the fact that it's there on the map at all. The map concerns territorial bases and Pakistan is not one for Urdu; it is a base for Sindhi, Punjabi, Kashmiri, etc. whose speakers happen to speak Urdu in the capacity of a second and national language. In general Urdu is a thing without a territorial base, unlike other other things such as Braj, Bagheli, etc. that are. More accurately it is a massively successful class dialect, which historically originated in a single, specific place (Delhi), which then was accepted as a unitary symbol of cultural and religious affiliation by Muslims diffused throughout India, as well as being directly moved throughout India by its speakers (armies and court to Hyderabad, poets to Agra). The most fantastic acceptance was that of it as the national language of the new nation-state Pakistan, and the most contemporary movement is that Muhajirs to Karachi and elsewhere in Pakistan. That's why Urdu isn't to be on the map.

Either way, what I've done is found something that deals with all these problems. It is a map from a book. It shows the distribution of all Indo-Aryan languages througout S Asia (1961), territorial demarcations and all. My suggestion to and request of you is to scrap your current map and instead make two new ones from this one: a definitive one for all of Indo-Aryan, and a specifically one for Hindi. Suggested differences between the source map and ones you'd make:

  • For both, the inclusion of state boundaries.
  • For the Indo-Aryan one,
    • English naming: Bangla, Asamiya → Bengali, Assamese.
    • Rather than the singularly broad HINDI heading, a correct splitting into RAJASTHANI - HINDI - BIHARI. Exclude Bhili and Khandeshi from Rajasthani. This is the current IA map we have.
  • For the Hindi one, use colour coding as you did before, with colours for Western Hindi, Eastern Hindi, Rajasthani, and Bihari. Of course the spanning HINDI heading won't be need because it'd be redundant. Also note that "Khari Boli" and "Kauravi" are clumped together as one "Hindi"- Just leave it like that.

Going back to the point I made, they deal with Urdu in the smaller "percentage" map at the bottom right. It could possibly be a third map you could make. So yeah, hopefully you are able and up to all this and we can all be happy. Thanks. Tuncrypt (talk) 14:46, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!
