Roman times in South Wales

Good job! Happy New Year! Interesting, anything in it which could help wikipedia? I've long wanted to do some local research on Roman times in South Wales. There was supposedly a Roman cemetery behind my house and Cold Knap and Llantwit Major Beach were old Roman forts/harbours.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:38, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to you, too. We've been away for the weekend and that turns out to have been a good idea, as there was 'heightened activity'. 40 aftershocks in one day, and some of them quite sizeable. Looks like there's more to come in 2012. Schwede66 19:50, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Nice. I've requested some more photos of the interior on flickr.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:28, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Botanical gardens edits

Hi Rosie - I realize you are building up valuable entries around the topic of the Physic/botanic/kitchen Garden but think that the material transferred from the Botanical gardens article diminishes considerably the article itself. Could you please discuss quite substantial deletions to a GA article on the talk page before making such deletions? Granitethighs 20:07, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Sorting help

Hi Rosie, thanks for the welcome!

I'm busy building my first (and possibly only) article in my user pages. However, one thing about my sortable table has me stumped. I have a column that is essentially numeric but with some blank entries and some entries with a letter after the number (such as '73a'). I cannot figure out how to ensure it is sorted numerically - and yes, this is after trying to read the Help page on sorting! Tried to do something but it didn't work.

Any help gratefully appreciated. Orfeocookie (talk) 09:31, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Never mind. I have happily just worked it out. Only took a couple of hours! Orfeocookie (talk) 10:08, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Nommed. Can you find some info on the mine in Prospidnick and anything else to get it to a x5 expansion? Somebody tried to delete it..♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:46, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Don't mind, either one, although I started Novo Sancti Petri which you might find more for for a double hook.. I also expanded Tolgus Mount. Can you find a bit more on the mining try googling book searching some of the things like West Tolgus etc and see if you can find anything else. I've nominated Prospidnick..♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:45, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! Well done. Lovely fountain outside the restaurant BTW.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:08, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes its a big place alright. But one wonders how many restaurants one could write about in France!! England has some beautiful country inns, so has France! The painting hook was good but I thought the natural one was to mention Robsipierre or Napolean meeting Josephine there. Would generate more interest I think! I have nominated anyway..♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:22, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

It's so neat you two are talking to each other under your respective Yogo sapphire awards from Gerda!PumpkinSky talk 21:34, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Rosie can you help me expand Llantwit Major. You should find a wealth of interesting information about it from sources like this and this site,, although I've added info from the history page of the latter already and some of the other links down to the side are empty, but the Victorian Fair is notable etc. What I want for the notable landmarks section is to have a decent summary for each of the buildings in the gallery. Initial info can be found on the blue plaques in the commons for the some of them. The church is particular needs a big section I think and we could use most of the text to expand the actual article also once done and make it a double hook. If you could find as much as you can find on the church including architecture and its interior and some of the other landmarks we'll be sorted! If you google any of the landmarks and Llantwit listed building you should be able to find the British Listed Building pages too.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:39, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Also Mueang Sing, Laos. Can you bulk the history from here and the landmarks from here and find more in google books or elsewhere , there is a surprising number of sources available! Check out the photos here and some of the youtube videos. Stunning place.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:53, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

If you can add something on the Roman villa and St Illtyd's church it should be ready to nominate, I've expanded the listed buildings part.♦ Dr. Blofeld

That time of year! Sorry to hear you've been ill. Wish you a speedy recovery, if that is possible! I think actually with a bit of work Rosie, Llantwit is a potential GA. I'll nominate for DYK before the five day period is up so that should buy more time... I've asked PLastikspork to shrink the listed building list as its a little unsightly but necessary..♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:28, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Yeah with Mueang Sing the history could be bulked up a bit from here..♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:40, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

I made a start on Dimlands. Needs a bit of an edit and a few more sources before nomming I think. How are you feeling?♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:53, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

I started Tresilian Bay. There's more on Llantwit Major people here. That Nicholl-Carne and Seys keeps turning up..♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:27, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Excellent, will add more later.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:15, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello again and... help!

Hello. You said I could come and ask you questions here.

I seem to have got myself in a spot of bother complete with an incident report. While I don't want you to come charging to the rescue, I do hope you can give me some advice on a particular piece of etiquette. In the course of the dispute I have made reference to the actions of another, far more experienced editor - I have not invoked him by name, but I have effectively invoked him by action.

I'm now wondering whether there is any sort of etiquette surrounding whether or not he should be made aware of being dragged into the conversation in this way. This is regardless of whether he would 'back me up' - he might well say 'no, my action was different from yours' and not support me. Or he might just tell us all to go away. However, I don't know whether or not it would be polite to enable him to get involved or rude to drag him into something he's not interested in. Any advice much appreciated. Orfeocookie (talk) 08:04, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello O - Yes, it is appropriate (and courteous) to notify a user if you've involved him/her in an incident report or discussion. I read the incident report, plus what's on the article talk page and the wikiproject talkpage. Sometimes it is very difficult to reach consensus, and, of course, the consensus can go in either direction. While that plays out, I hope this doesn't dissuade you from editing wikipedia as this encyclopedia could use another bright, thoughtful editor. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:11, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
To be honest it is dissuading me a great deal. It is one thing to receive a difference of an opinion. It is quite another to basically tell a new person they have no right expressing an opinion or asking a question, and to set a 'work program' for them based on where YOU think they'd be useful (ie not sniffing around 'your' perfect article). Perhaps it is a character flaw on my part, but I cannot think of anything I find more angering and distressing than trying to do the right thing (using talk pages, raising discussions and not taking major unilateral action) and having it thrown back in my face. Orfeocookie (talk) 00:04, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I want to make sure to mention, though, that not every editor reacts in the same way. For example, I'd be delighted if you or anyone else would work on any of the 2,000+ articles I've created. ;) In the next couple of days, other editors will probably comment at the incident page as the length issue has been raised on the classical music wikiproject page. Eventually, the group should reach a consensus and an administrator will close the incident. In the meantime, I'd recommend patience, and avoidance of slang ("slaved"). Though I'm leaving in the morning for Elko -- the National Cowboy Poetry Festival -- I'll keep an eye on how the incident report unfolds when I'm able to get online over the next 3 days. In my absence, I can recommend 2 other editors that might be available for some talk page interaction if you feel you want to connect with someone else: User:Gerda Arendt knows a thing or two about Bach cantatas, while User:SarahStierch has expertise with promoting positive new user experiences. I hope those feelings of anger and distress dissipate quickly, Orfeocookie, and that you enjoy editing wikipedia. --Rosiestep (talk) 05:34, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I am ready to help, but the topic of the Clavierübung was one I intentionally avoided. I know that it always takes ages to edit that article but would not know how to split it reasonably. There is the example of Messiah where we have Messiah Part I, II and III. I have the feeling though that the Bach case is not quite as easy because it's not a sequence. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:36, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I replied on my talk to your post. In addition: did you see that the reviewer recommended to spice the John H. Dessauer article. Would you do that? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:56, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

A good start for the Port is from French wikipedia here. I think it needs some chunky pargaphs on it, Calais is one of the world's most important ports after all! Online Ambassador, Spring 2012

Hi, Rosiestep! As you may know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. MSU Interview

Dear Rosiestep,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Handling of Director Emi

Hello. Newbie "Director Emi" has proved a bit problematic, with auto-identified "vandalism" (probably good-faith erroneously tagged by reference removal), borderline edit warring, and probable IP socket puppetry (not logging in to try to disguise some of the warring) (see particularly his edits to Apollo 1 and Agena Target Vehicle). I appreciate that all new users should be welcomed and guided to the appropriate principles, but I think his behavior warrants that this be done with a bit of a firmer hand than the warm, "tea and cookies" welcome I see you gave him.

I was about to try my hand at a "firmer" welcome myself (I acknowledge I'm relatively new myself and not experienced in wiki-diplomacy) when I saw your welcome. I don't by any means believe in biting the newbies, but in some cases, the "love conquers all" philosophy just strikes me as naively utopian. I think he needs to be told (nicely) that he got off on the wrong foot. (I understand there to be other welcome templates in this vein.) In my two years here, I've found my editing experience mainly enjoyable and an education in getting along with others by consensus, but on rare occasions I've crossed paths with contentious editors like this one who really make it miserable. Can you offer me any advice or guidance on the proper way to handle this editor? Thanks. JustinTime55 (talk) 18:04, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Justin and thanks for stopping by. Sorry if my welcome cookies and teahouse invitation to DE appear to be "naively utopian", it's just that my personal style is to be nice to editors, and that generally bodes well. I hope DE accepts the offer extended to spend some time getting his questions answered at the Teahouse. I left the invitation as I noticed that he had quite a few edits in a relatively short period of time, some of which had issues, and if he availed himself of the teahouse service (staffed by friendly hosts), he could get some "how to..." information. As for your question about dealing with contentious editors, my suggestion is to be kind and diplomatic in edit summaries and talk page notes. Instead of a templated message (most of what DE has received thus far...), you might consider writing a sentence or two explaining what you've noticed, why that's a problem, and offer a suggestion(s). If all else fails, there are also plenty of options available when dealing with sockpuppets, intentional vandals, and/or jerks. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:15, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Huzzah!

One of the new editors you invited just asked a question at the Teahouse! I don't even know how to do the whole "make a map" thing for Wikipedia...but perhaps you do? :) SarahStierch (talk) 01:48, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

DYK for Gustav Morelli

Orlady (talk) 08:03, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Can you find anything else on Enzo Petito or fill in some of the red links? I started one, Teatro San Ferdinando, which needs a few sources and can be expanded further using the Italian source given or anything else! Also Piccolo Teatro (Milan). We could probably do a double hook here. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:42, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

You might find more on Llanrothal, Carrigrohane and David Edward Cronin.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:12, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

So I see. Excellent. Can you tie up the Italian theatre articles I created on the 6th over the weekend? They don't need much, just enough for DYK! Iused your spare DYK review for nominating the West and East village articles BTW!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:36, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Nommed theatre and Enzo Petito here. Only Piccolo Teatro (Milan) remaining now from 5 days ago. Will hopefully tie up those Llanrothan ones later and nominate. You might find more on Henry Van der Weyde BTW.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:58, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I squeezed in Piccolo for three article hook!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:27, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

I've added to Cwm. Will see about Llanrothal and planning a double hook tomorrow. You might be interested in Henry Milbourne and Hilston Park. We might use Milbourne to create a triple article hook!♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:17, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi: Rosietep, sorry to have missed you from the DYK nomination - you are most welcome. I'm told you are too far away for the {{MonmouthpediA]] party, but it will be webstreamed so we can see the winners and if Dr Blofeld doesnt come in disguise (he might!) then we can show you what he looks like! Do score up your points if you get time. Victuallers (talk) 13:39, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Also started John Arnold of Monmouthshire. Nasty man! Poor David Lewis of St Michael's Church, Llantarnam!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:39, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

You may wish to expand Hereford Cathedral Library. There is a lot in this book from Page 511.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:53, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Thank you & a question

Thank you for your invitation for the Teahouse! I will certainly make use of this opportunity. However, I have a question for you specifically, as I saw you are a contributor and wiki expert. I am trying to improve the Digital Identity article, I think there are serious issues with the content in general terms, doesn't cover the wide range of meanings and related studies related to the term, but I haven't found anyone who is more experienced with wikipedia or within social sciences to help me out. I would be doing an extensive scholastic research on the topic due to an educational assignment. I didn't get a response on the talk pages. Could you point me in the right direction? Bettinusz (talk) 20:35, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi. In your recent article edits, you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Invitations to the Teahouse

While I can understand the motivations for the Teahouse project, and wish it well, I have to question the wisdom of inviting 'contributors' to join in the way you have done here [3]. This particular 'user' has precisely two edits, the first of which consists of adding grossly offensive racist abuse to our Indigenous peoples article, which is then (fortunately) deleted with the second edit. Why should we be extending any invitations to participate to such individuals? Clearly we shouldn't. Can I ask that you be a little more cautious about who you extend your invitations to... AndyTheGrump (talk) 04:09, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Andy - Thanks for stopping by and bringing this to my attention. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:26, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello from the future

Hi! There seems to be something wrong with your signature in the Teahouse invitation; according to your signature, this one was added 07:12, 11 March. jonkerz ♠talk 03:17, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Wow, that is weird! Not sure why that's happening. Thanks for bringing it to my attention so I can check on it. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:23, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Teahouse Timestamp

Hey Rosie! FYI your timestamp for Teahouse invites on talk pages states you sent it on March 11. As seen here.  :) Sarah (talk) 04:13, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Sarah, I posted the message above about the same thing a whole 56 (!) minutes before you ;) I guess I could have used a more descriptive title though... :) jonkerz ♠talk 04:39, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
Nono, yours was a great header, Jonkerz! --Rosiestep (talk) 04:41, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Count

You may wish to add to Guillermo Morphy or Antigua Sailing Week. I noticed you were a quiet last weekend so I didn't pester you this week!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:31, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Does the teahouse seem to be working?♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:27, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Sure I'll look tomorrow. BTW you might want to help expand Ganarew for Monmouthpedia. It was created March 21. I'll try and edit it tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:30, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Jean Clédat also needs a bit more. I'm eyeing up Baouit or Bawit for that and a double hook.. Also Shottesbrooke Park needs a tad more!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:14, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Ganarew

User:Martinevans123 has got back and is fine with moving St Swithin's to its own page. Could you do this, or shall I? I think there's quite enough now to suitably populate the village page. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 13:56, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Rosiestep. You have done a wonderful job with that article. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:12, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, Martin. I wanted to make sure that I not only moved the church part out, but that I added some content, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:13, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
I think the medieval cross (listed) and the Victorian Gothic pinnacle are two different things. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:27, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Yes, they are 2 different things, and I've grouped them with a 3rd scheduled historical monument Little Doward camp. The article could probably expand/differentiate a bit on these. For now, I need to run out the door. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:29, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Ok. I have made a couple of small adjustments which I hope are suitable. Thanks again. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:59, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
I think it's turning out really well. If there are any tweaks or additions you can come up with for the church, please go for it. Thanks! --Rosiestep (talk) 01:03, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

oh, did you want to include the church with the article on Ganarew? I nominated it as its the last day. I've nominated 7 articles today for DYK!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:21, 26 March 2012 (UTC) Ended up being 8 articles! Thanks!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:58, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Emailing invites!

Hi Rosie! Thanks for kicking butt, as usual, with inviting people to the Teahouse. You are the #1 invite sender and that really really makes a difference, as that's what we need the most right now. I did want to let you know that I have been emailing those that you didn't email in your invitations, and I'd like to just remind you to try to do your best to email invitations and leave a template if they have the email option turned on. I know it can be super easy just to fly through them with the template, but, as shown here "to email or not to email", emailed invitees are more likely to show up than just templated invitees! You can find my email template here. I do hope this isn't too much of a burden, but, I do think we'd see a step up in our visitors with this email effort. Thanks as always Rosie! I'm not sure why you offered a welcome to JojaMaria (talk · contribs) whose only edits were vandalism. Dougweller (talk) 13:17, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dougweller - Thanks for letting me know about JojaMaria. I responded at the Teahouse. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:27, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll take a look. Dougweller (talk) 15:52, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Lithuanian orchestra

Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and Saulius Sondeckis need a little more to be DYK viable as a double hook.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:41, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Kurhaus, Wiesbaden also need sourcing for DYK.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:03, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Finally getting somewhere..Dr. Blofeld 16:35, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Nommed the Lithianians, thanks for that. Rukwa Valley ‎, Donguila, Lebamba and Punu-Lumbo mask need a bit more for DYK. Don't want to weigh you down with any more! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:54, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Will edit those tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:21, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Dunno. I think so. But it needs to be considerably better advertised and a good prize like $250-$500 offer a month.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:45, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Somebody already nominated your Krenholm article for DYK this afternoon. I don't think people should be permitted to nominate articles they haven't contributed to!! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:08, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Wow this town is amazing. Google street view zoom in on Colobraro and the road Salita Cairoli [4] and walk down the road until you can see the little old local man dressed in black and the fantastic buildings and view. Then look at the view from the Via Gran Sasso further up, quite extraordinary. Its about as authentic Italian as you can get! I just adore Italy.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:01, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
