Question from Binroc (23:02, 9 September 2024)

Hi!

I am new to editing and I have a question: I have edited an article today on the page of the HP 15C calculator (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-15C) where under the legacy section I added a short description of the most well-known modern replica/clone of this model. It was immediately removed for "coatracking", however the very similarly constructed wiki page of the HP 42S calculator (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-42S) has an even longer paragraph of a clone under the same legacy section. How is it possible that on one calculator's page this is coatracking and on the other one's it is not? Am I doing something wrong here?

Thanks for your help in advance! --Binroc (talk) 23:02, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Binroc, I would suggest discussing this with @MrOllie, who reverted you, on their talk page. In general, just because one article does something doesn't mean it's okay to do in another article (see WP:OTHERSTUFF, which is about deletion discussi9on but also applies here). — Qwerfjkltalk 16:53, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Quab12 on Sydney Eisteddfod (13:50, 10 September 2024)

Hello, Quab12 here. On the article Sydney eisteddfod the third paragraph in the about section has no citations. Should I remove the paragraph entirely or try to find a citation for it? --Quab12 (talk) 13:50, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Quab12, ideally you should find some citations, especially for that paragraph which should be relatively easy to find a source for. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:59, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Bot required

Hi Qwerfjkl, we are gradually migrating all the |listas= parameters from WikiProject banners into the banner shell. Is this something your bot might be able to help with? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:44, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

Martin, sure, that doesn't sound too hard to do. — Qwerfjkltalk 15:01, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
That would be awesome. Category:WikiProject banners with redundant listas value is now starting to fill. Will you apply for BRFA for this task? It is a cosmetic task, but I think I can make the case for doing it on two counts:
  1. Avoids conflicting values, which cause DEFAULTSORT conflicts on a page. (If redundant values are left on a page, there is a good chance one will be changed without the other one.)
  2. Gets editors used to the idea that listas should be in the banner shell and not on banner templates. Eventually we will stop using listas on banners altogether.
— Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:00, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
Martin, how many pages are there going to be? Currently there are 19, which probably doesn't warrant a bot task. If it's going to take a while to fill, it's probably easier to wait until the category is filled before proceeding. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:38, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
I suspect there will be a large number, but actually I have no idea. It's fine to wait, of course — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:11, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
Martin, looks like Cewbot is taking care of this. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:27, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Akoce Shano on Help:Introduction to Wikipedia (00:24, 14 September 2024)

My style of adding a topic and sub-topics to artcle (for shows).

So my way to improve an article in some way (In case of adding informations about a topic and excluding a basic inforamtion like: Plot, characters etc.) is do alot of rescearch for more info about the show and give a good place for it in article which in my way works like this:

Production: Here it's a topic about the show and (mostly in some cases) write and cite everything about it line how does animation were done, audio design, music, cast it's cancelation etc.

Broadcast: For that one, if show cames out on Television first then you can give it a sub-topic Release which is similar to theatrialical first release of the film and you can write when the show had aired, in which country and when was discontinued. Streaming service is similar to release sub-topic and it shows when show had appeared on a platform and were it was removed. Additionally you can give a reference where the show is available on what Streaming service or digital purchase and where was removed. International broadcast similar to release it should show (sometimes) when the show was aired on the different channel etc.

Reception: for Critical reception theres nothing special, outside giving a column end if there's not much of critics reviews. In Awards and nominations and accolades there's more way that you can improve that sub-topic. mostly is an added a column for things like Nominee(s) like who got awarded for. Episode is a column where there's every episode that is Nomined for (they can be removed if there's no topic for any of those releated found).

Yeah I think that's about it!

Thanks! 77.65.108.190 (talk) 17:21, 14 September 2024 (UTC)

77.65.108.190, great! Do you have any questions? — Qwerfjkltalk 17:23, 14 September 2024 (UTC)

Ok thx bro yeah so can u like help me making the page pls Thandazile mynagaza (talk) 14:38, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

Thandazile mynagaza, Welcome! Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing seven million articles before trying it. When you do decide to have a go at a new article, you are highly encouraged to read WP:Your first article. If you haven't already also check out WP:TUTORIAL; it's a lot of fun! Happy editing! — Qwerfjkltalk 14:58, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from RodRodney20 (15:24, 16 September 2024)

Hello, I am trying to update the table in this article "List of mobile virtual network operators in the United States", specifically the 5G column, I'm pretty sure most/if not all companies now use 5G. I think there is a formula that is being used in the table and I'm unsure of how you would make edits here. Thanks --RodRodney20 (talk) 15:24, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

RodRodney20, try switching to source mode when editing, and then look for something like
|<!--           5G Access--> {{dunno}}

Then you can scroll up a bit to find
|<!--             Company--> Airvoice Wireless

Which tells you which company you're editing.
You can then change the 5G Access to {{yes}} if it does support 5G, preferably followed up with a reference. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:21, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

Mass RM CfD

How do users mass rename CfD properly? Because when nominating, it lacks the title I want to change them into. --MikutoH talk! 01:21, 28 September 2024 (UTC)

MikutoH, when you're listing the titles, use | followed by the title you want to rename them to, e.g. Category:Example|Category:Target — Qwerfjkltalk 17:14, 28 September 2024 (UTC)

signature lints

Hello. I hope you are doing well. After Qwerfjkl (bot) 31, I am wondering, how do you create page list for pywikibot script? —usernamekiran (talk) 16:23, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

Usernamekiran, for that I used:
parsed_data = parse_text_file(file_path)
titles=[]

for entry in parsed_data:
    gen = pagegenerators.SearchPageGenerator(entry['search_url'], site=site)
    print(f"Searching for {entry['search_url']}")
    for title in gen:
        titles.append(title)
titles = list(set(titles))
print(len(titles))
Using a text file that I created manually — Qwerfjkltalk 17:25, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
thanks, this is appreciated a lot. One more silly question: how many cases are you going to handle? The list at Wikipedia:Linter/Signature submissions looks pretty big. I am happy to help. —usernamekiran (talk) 18:32, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
Usernamekiran, I just copy & pasted all the ones that hand replacements into a text file (about 40, I think). — Qwerfjkltalk 06:17, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
dang. Let me know if some task comes up. I would be happy to help. —usernamekiran (talk) 14:13, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
Usernamekiran, I was thinking of making a website to make submissions easier. A lot of linter errors are repeated, and we can use parsoid to verify the output text has no lint errors.
Currently I'm working on something like toolforge:yabbr but for bare URLs. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:02, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
that sounds interesting. let me know if I can contribute in some way. —usernamekiran (talk) 19:55, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
Usernamekiran, For the latter, I have a not-so-working demo at https://abba.toolforge.org/. I'm probably going to be busy in real life for the next few weeks, so I'm more than happy to share the code if you want to play around with it (I should probably publish the code anyway, but oh well). — Qwerfjkltalk 20:23, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
