Elwing
[edit]I am at best ambivalent on Elwing. Her turning into a bird and going to Earendil (or however you spell her husband's name) is a key part of the eventual turning of the Silmarillion into a vicotry. I did once read a scholarly comparison of the fall of Troy and the fall of Gondolin that argued it is the combination of qualities of Elwing and her husband that lead to the victory of good. Of course that writer said Elwing was the daughter of Beren and Luthien, but I at least once told someone that Elrond lived in Gondolin, when in fact his father was a child when it was destoryed, but that was not in a scholarly paper. Mistakes about Tolkien's timeline exist, and inaccuracies are often more common when we have indepdent sources. Still I only created the entry on Elwing because her article was a redirect there. If you want to remove her from the list you should also propose a deletion of the redirect.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:23, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Johnpacklambert: I guess I don't have an opinion on the (non)-notability of Elwing from a plot perspective. My objection is simply, that if it is notable, it should have its own page; if not, it should not be included on List of Middle-earth characters. Other than RfD, we could also change the redirect: how do you feel about redirecting to The Silmarillion#Quenta_Silmarillion, which is a plot summary that explains Elwing's actions? BenKuykendall (talk) 20:59, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- I am not convinced notability is the threshold for inclusion in the chracter list. I think though if we want to redirect Elwing she is most likely to be a redirect to Earendil. They are basically so comingled in notability that it is hard to speak of one without the other, with the exception of Earendil's very brief appearance in accounts of the fall of Gondolin.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:45, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- The list reads
The following is a list of notable characters from J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium
(emphasis mine). I'm more than happy to discuss changing that threshold: in fact I started a discussion about it here. But at present the inclusion criteria seem fairly cut-and-dry. I'm happy with redirecting Elwing to Eärendil though. BenKuykendall (talk) 21:56, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- Given that we're cutting lists and individual's articles, I think it makes perfect sense for reasonably-significant characters to have a cited paragraph in a list article (or perhaps, an honourable mention with citation and maybe a footnote in a topic article, like Rohan or Mordor) but not their own article. They are after all part of a book (indeed, a heap of books) so they don't have to be 100% stand-alone notable to be worth mentioning and citing. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:19, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hello everyone. I second this approach of creating a list entry for Elwing. And since Eärendil and his wife are in fact so comingled, how about having one article for both of them: Eärendil and Elwing? We could move the existing Eärendil page and then merge what was formerly presented in Elwing. Also, speaking of essays, I just found this. If only skimmed through it yet, but it might be very helpful. De728631 (talk) 22:55, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
- The list reads
- @Chiswick Chap and De728631: I like the Eärendil and Elwing idea; it would also justify having both of them on the list. I would not be opposed to a bold move. For the more general question of "who gets list entries on List of Middle-earth characters", I really urge you both to contribute to the discussion on the talk page. A few editors have made proposals you might find interesting. BenKuykendall (talk) 23:20, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
- Alright, I have moved and merged Eärendil and Elwing to Eärendil and Elwing. De728631 (talk) 20:22, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
Talk:Bitcoin Cash#RfC: Which of the alternative formulations does The Verge article confirm? closure
[edit]Hi, and thank you for the closure. I have got a related question. In the discussion, this edit in the RfC discussed another use of the source, namely as a reference confirming the claim that "Bcash" is the WP:ALTNAME of Bitcoin Cash. I find it surprising that the editor claims that the source "directly conflicts with other sources...", while insisting that the source confirms the WP:ALTNAME claim. My interpretation of the RfC is that the source does not directly support the WP:ALTNAME claim and that it should be removed. Do you think that it can be done as a result of the RfC, or that there should be another RfC discussing this specific removal? Ladislav Mecir (talk) 22:06, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Ladislav Mecir: I am not heavily involved in editing Bitcoin Cash; I closed the discussion as a neutral party when the consensus for formulation 2 was quite clear. I don't have any authority or special qualifications to further interpret the discussion. I notice you are already discussing your latest change on the talk page. Certainly you should continue discussing with other interested editors there, either through a simple discussion or an RfC. BenKuykendall (talk) 22:54, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Green sauce deletion
[edit]Hi, I agree that the green sauce article as it stood needed reliable sources. However, before proposing articles for deletion on the grounds that the topic is not notable, I'd suggest you first look in standard reference sources for the topic. In the case of culinary and gastronomic topics, The Oxford Companion to Food is a good starting place, and sure enough, it has an article on "greensauce" [sic] which mentions the British, German, Italian, French, and South American versions. Best, --Macrakis (talk) 17:16, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Macrakis:. Thanks for the tip. I do not have access to that reference, but I am glad you found an adequate source for the article. I am happy to WP:WDAFD the nomination. BenKuykendall (talk) 18:38, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! BTW, for other food-related articles, a Google Books search like [davidson food "green sauce" ] will often find useful information. --Macrakis (talk) 18:45, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Tropical Cyclone Categories
[edit]Please be careful [[Category:Lists of Pacific hurricanes]] if it really needs to exist separately from [[Category:Lists of tropical cyclones]], should be strictly limited to tropical cyclones in the Northern Pacific Ocean between America and the International Dateline. This is because tropical cyclones outside of these boundaries are not known as hurricanes but tropical cyclones and typhoons.Jason Rees (talk) 02:44, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Zaire and the DRC
[edit]I saw you created category:1970 disestablishments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There was no such place as the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1970. The names of this area were
- Congo Free State (1885–1908)
- Belgian Congo (1908–1960)
- Democratic Republic of the Congo (1960–1965)
- Zaire (1965–1997)
- Democratic Republic of the Congo (1997 to present)
This can be handled in {{DisestcatCountry}} by adding a third parameter, which was designed for situations like this, e.g.
{{DisestcatCountry|Belgian Congo|Belgian Congo|Democratic Republic of the Congo}}
{{DisestcatCountry|Zaire|Zaire|Democratic Republic of the Congo}}
The category can then refer to the name of the country as it was at the time, e.g. Category:1970 disestablishments in Zaire, while the year-by-year links transition from one name to another. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 14:22, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Aymatth2: Thanks for bringing this up. Where did you source those dates though? The hatnote on Zaire specifically mentions
1971
through1997
. The category category:1969 establishments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo also suggests the cutoff is a little bit later (though the non-existence of both category:1970 establishments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and category:1970 establishments in Zaire is salient). BenKuykendall (talk) 16:52, 13 April 2021 (UTC)- Oops. You are right. I thought Mobutu renamed the country Zaire when he seized power in 1965, but according to this source it was Republic of Congo from 1960 to 1964, then Democratic Republic of Congo (no "the", but other sources do have "the" or "du") from 1964 to 1971, when it became Zaire, and from 1997 the DRC. My revised list would be:
- Congo Free State (1885–1908)
- Belgian Congo (1908–1960)
- Republic of the Congo (Léopoldville) (1960–1964)
- Democratic Republic of the Congo (1964–1971)
- Zaire (1971–1997)
- Democratic Republic of the Congo (1997 to present)
- Wikipedia's coverage of the Congo region is terrible for a country with 100 million people. Rhode Island has far more material. The articles that do cover enterprises in the Congo often do not have establishment / disestablishment categories. History of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has some of the dates in its index (confusingly including "Zaire (1965–97)"), but you have to look at the text for the other dates. It would be nice to just start categories for all the years from 1885 to the present, but some officious editor would then propose deleting all the empty ones... Aymatth2 (talk) 19:36, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Aymatth2: yeah that looks closer to what I'm seeing elsewhere, though occasionally we conflate the 1960-1964 RotC with the 1964-1971 DRotC. I'm not going to fight with anyone about empty categories... it might be more productive to make content first. The YYYY in the COUNTRY_NAME articles are a place to start -- they are at least wikilinked with the appropriate names in Template:Years in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. BenKuykendall (talk) 20:02, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- I have started a lot of articles about people and companies of the Congo Free State and Belgian Congo, with some spillover to post-independence, but am lazy about creating missing categories and adding events to articles like "19xx in the Belgian Congo". It would be easier to do them en masse. Others must feel the same. From {{Years in the Democratic Republic of the Congo}} it seems that nothing much happened in 1997 in either Zaire or the DRC. Articles could be mined for events to put into "19xx in the Belgian Congo" articles, I suppose.

My revised list would be:
- 21 November 1887 Alphonse van Gèle reaches the Zongo rapids on the Ubangi River in the En Avant
- 27 May 1890 the expedition of Léon Roget and Jules Alexandre Milz reaches the Uele River opposite the Djabir village
- 2 December 1974 the Société des Chemins de Fer Vicinaux du Congo is merged into the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Zaïrois
- 29 March 1997 Société Minière et Industrielle du Kivu is put into liquidation
- Not the sort of task I am interested in. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:24, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:1 cent euro coin common side.gif
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:1 cent euro coin common side.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 02:02, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Be bold to move
[edit]Hi, BenKuykendall! I saw you listed a move request to an unused (red-colored) title. As you've been registered here for over 30 months now, you could move such pages in the future to avoid waiting for days and weeks to generate community opinions an/or takes on it/them. Only list requests when your preferred target title(s) for the moves are hyperlinked or blue in color (in that case, use WP:RMTR). In short, be bold when you have to and take community scrutiny and advice on the chin as you move around here on WP! Happy editing! Intrisit (talk) 06:14, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
