Thanks for the comments on the link. I'm new to Wikipedia so hopefully I'm responding in the right way. I set up an web site to help people find bike parking in Pittsburgh. This is a purely noncommercial site. I was looking for ways to let people know about it and found the this Wikipedia page about transportation in Pittsburgh. The page already has several external links to biking organizations in Pittsburgh. The page also references the City of Pittsburgh's biking plan, part of which is a plan to increase the availability of bike parking. My site documents the progress of that plan and there is no other site through which that information can be obtained. Therefore, I think the link is relevant to the subject of the article and also generally useful to a potential reader of the article. Therefore, I think it would be beneficial to include the link, either in the body of the article of in a separate external links section. Thanks. Sorry if my user name was confusing, I have never edited Wikipedia before and was just trying to add some useful information. Nowhere in the account creation process does it provide any guidelines for choosing a user name for new users. I tried creating a new account as Orangemike suggested however it tells me I am not able to create a new account from my IP address. After having my original edit reverted I reviewed the relevant policies on the help wiki and I understand the policy about conflict of interest, but at the same time anyone who would be editing an article about biking in Pittsburgh would likely be an avid biker living in Pittsburgh and involved with local biking organizations and web sites relevant to the article. As recommended in the guidelines, I posted a comment under the talk page of the article explaining why I thought my edit was relevant and useful. The only other edit I made to the article itself was to include a link to the citywide biking plan on the City of Pittsburgh web site, which is relevant to the existing article and not a web site I maintain, yet that change also was reverted without an explanation. If you log out, you should see a "Username policy" section on the right side of the page for creating a new account. In any case, just create something neutral and innocuous and you should be fine. I tweaked the block on this account, so it should not be a problem to create a new username now. You're welcome to continue discussing the bike link in the Transportation article. Jesus Christ. Talk about biting the newcomers. Usually I try to keep my tone neutral and moderated, but I'm aghast and sickened by the assumptions of bad faith and the dogpiling that happened here. Pghbikeracks: I'm sorry that your first contributions here were met with irrational, overwhelming, and facelessly-bureaucratic resistance. It's true that you didn't follow what we might consider to be "best practices", but I'm stunned at the astronomically poor response that my fellow editors pursued here—please rest assured that Wikipedians usually give at least a passing thought to the concepts of being welcoming and helpful rather than iron-fistedly resistant to newcomers. —Bill Price (nyb) 18:47, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
