DYK Nom: Marie Jansen

Happy New Year, Pgallert. Do you have time to nominate Marie Jansen? A hook might be: "...that Marie Jansen, after a highly successful career in musical theatre, declared bankruptcy and was forced to work as a seamstress?" -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:09, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Happy New Year to you, too. Nice article, although I don't quite understand the final that Jansen could not have been much older than fifty at the time of death --- she was not much older; what are you trying to say? The nomination is here: Template:Did you know nominations/C-Band All Sky Survey. Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 20:56, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! We've cleared up the birth date issue. -- Ssilvers (talk) 02:10, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
Template:Did you know nominations/Marie Jansen This is the right link. --Pgallert (talk) 10:24, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

DYK Nom: Judith Newman

Hello! Do you have time to nominate Judith Newman? A hook might be: "...that journalist Judith Newman, annoyed at not having her own entry, wrote a New York Times piece asking Wikipedians to write it." -- Ssilvers (talk) 02:45, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Done: Template:Did you know nominations/Judith Newman --Pgallert (talk) 11:09, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Although I should say that I read the hook reference as humour, so that it does not strictly support the hook. "Annoyed" might not be the right word either, and one of the thousand DYK rules says that the hook reference may not be self-published. So let's say I wouldn't pass it as-is. --Pgallert (talk) 11:22, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

OK, I fixed the hook. Looks good? -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:41, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Well, strictly speaking, no ;) The author of the article supporting the hook, is not sufficiently independent of the subject, and the ref is thus not a reliable source. But let's see, maybe the reviewer doesn't catch it---the Wikipedia story is surely the best hook material in the article. --Pgallert (talk) 09:41, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
I don't think that is relevant here. It is indisputable that the hook is true: the article exists, she wrote it, and in it she asks Wikipedians to craft the article so that it won't be deleted. It's not like the subject asserted something that we can't otherwise verify, she just "did" something that everyone can verify by simply looking at the NYT article. Can you show me what you see in the reviewing guide that gives you pause? -- Ssilvers (talk) 10:04, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
I also think the hook is fine, not least by IAR. Self-referential statements often do not play along well with rule sets. The rule I was referring to is WP:DYK 3b, where 'reliable source' specifically requests the independence of publisher and author. I suggested this rule, that's why I know ;) IIRC, at the time when you still directly contributed to DYK, this rule was much less strict, allowing for a less reliable hook ref if the rest of the article is properly sourced. --Pgallert (talk) 10:41, 12 January 2014 (UTC)
Not to beat this horse too dead, but 3b does not say anything about independence from publisher and author, unless I somehow missed it. So I am still curious: can you quote the language you are referring to? The definition of reliable source also does not say this. It does say that while "primary sources" (which this is) "can be both reliable and useful in certain situations, they must be used with caution in order to avoid original research." There is no "original research" problem here. We are simply saying that she wrote an article in the NYT and stating that the article says "x", both of which are completely verifiable simply by looking at the article itself online. So I do not see any restriction at all unless, again, I am missing it. -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:47, 12 January 2014 (UTC)
No, policy discussions are always worthwhile ;) The argument is as follows: WP:IRS requests "reliable, third-party, published sources" and links 'third party' to Wikipedia:Third-party sources. The link target is just an essay but requests "A third-party source is one that is entirely independent of the subject being covered". As the guideline links the essay, it explicitly endorses the essay, that's how I read it. WP:IRS again defines 'source' as any of the following three: the creator, the publisher, and the work itself. It further states that all of the readings of 'source' can negatively affect reliability. This is from where I derive that there is something missing from the independence, and hence the reliability, of this source. Of course not in the conservative, every-day meaning of "reliable": She definitely wrote what she wrote. --Pgallert (talk) 12:38, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

[left] Again, I think you are ignoring the key part of WP:RS here. There is a section there called "Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources", which says, in part that "Primary sources ... can be both reliable and useful in certain situations, they must be used with caution in order to avoid original research. While specific facts may be taken from primary sources, secondary sources that present the same material are preferred." In this case, we are stating facts that are verifiable, on their face, from this primary source (Newman's article), which are that: (1) she wrote the NYT article, (2) the article asks Wikipedians to help craft her WP entry. So the source we are citing is the definitive and 100% reliable source for this information. It would be nice to also cite a secondary source that covers this as "news", but other newpapers are not likely to jump in to discuss this little article by their competitor, the NYT. So, it is not necessary to cite a secondary source in this case because what we are stating, in the words of WP:RS, does not involve "original research". It just is what it is. -- Ssilvers (talk) 16:39, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Ssilvers, the guidelines for article writing are more lenient than DYK rules. This was the discussion that was held in 2011 (particularly #5). Already then editors argued about the exact meaning of 3b, but what emerged was that an article only needs to be based on 'sterling' sources, but the hook for DYK needs to exclusively employ those. I'm not suggesting that you change the hook, and there is no question that the NYT supports it, just that if a DYK hardliner comes along the hook will not be okayed. Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 10:20, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

STP BPDU Types

Hi

Regarding the STP BPDU Types : Again, There is no BPDU Type known as "ACK BPDU". You have pointed to page 63 of IEEE 802.1D pdf file. If you take a good look at the whole section 9.3 again, you will see that it defines three types of BPDUs which are (Configuration BPDU , TCN BPDU and RST BPDU), and in section 9.3.4 it defines a way for "Validation of received BPDUs" not a forth type of BPDU ! ACK is a bit in the "flags" field of Configuration BPD and RST BPDU. Also if you take a look at the "Bridge Protocol Data Unit fields" on the same Wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanning_Tree_Protocol#Bridge_Protocol_Data_Unit_fields. You don't see any points to ACK BPDUs at the type field. The possible values for the BPDU type field are : 0x00 Config BPDU, 0x80 TCN BPDU, 0x02 RST BPDU

Hope this helps Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiJackool (talkcontribs) 08:20, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi @WikiJackool:, you are right, there is no ACK BPDU. I didn't develop the current content. I just have the article on my watchlist to check what changes are made to it. When I saw your edit it seemed to me that you inadvertently removed some useful content. Your edit removed all three of the previously listed 'BPDUs', and my revert reinstated them all. I did not look up the IEEE 802.1D pdf file for that edit, which I probably should have done. Thanks for improving the STP article! --Pgallert (talk) 10:41, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Tradional Knowledge in Wikipedia

Isent a message to your pgnew1 talk page account, listed as an alternative account. I work with Afro/Hondurans and Honduran Indians about a new technologies and I am having an incredibly hard time with the issues related to what you can cite, and what you can include. I also research about Afro-Honduran popular culture helping them to connect to their roots in Africa and work with some other researchers of Afro-Latin America popular culture like crafts, games, musical instruments, foods, stories, ceremonies, use of medicinal plants and other healing techniques. I am tremendously excited about sharing about African popular culture that is still alive today in Honduras and in Africa. the problem that the information was not available before in Honduras was a significant problem. I find African and Central American popular culture information which is a part of Traditional Knowledge the most exciting thing in Wikipedia and one of the most exciting things on the Internet. When Africans left Africa on slave ships they carried nothing in their hands, but a lot in their heads and so they were able to recreate foods, crafts, music, stories, and ceremonies and in fact were often able to get access to African origin plants and sometimes even African animals like guinea hens which I find interesting. there will be more left in Central America than in the US, because it is a similar climate and so African plants could grow, and there were large sections of Honduras and Nicaragua that were outside of the colonial government control. The legal definition of where the Honduran border was in this region only dates from 1960. that all the people inside this area have Honduran ID cards dates to after 1992. Spanish is very much a minority language in this region. Best wishes, Wendy Griffin 18:24, 14 January 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garipech01 (talkcontribs)

Hi Wendy, thanks for contacting me here on User talk:Pgallert, I'm hardly ever using the other account. Considering the situation that you describe on User talk:Pg_new1 you may start right away. Books and newspapers not available online, and/or in a foreign language, are still perfectly acceptable sources for Wikipedia content. I can help you with the formatting and with technical issues.
The easiest would be if you started a user space draft. To do that, you login, click on your account name on top of the page, and append to the url a forward slash (/) and your desired article name. You find more detailed help here: Help:Userspace draft. Let me know if you face any difficulties in this first step. Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 06:22, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Category:Former members of the National Assembly of Namibia

Hi there,

I have not been editing many Namibia-related articles lately, but thank you for your continued hard work! I wanted to discuss with you the usefulness of Category:Former members of the National Assembly of Namibia. Under WP:Category names, it says "Occupation categories should not be divided into "current" or "former" categories. For example, Category:Former child actors and Category:Current Minnesota Twins players should not exist." Would you consider deleting the category you recently created on these grounds?--TM 02:51, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi TM, I was just quick-searching and found quite a few such categories (about 8,000, actually), didn't know it is discouraged. Can't delete the cat myself but will just depopulate it, no big deal. BTW, are you aware of any reason for that? I found it logical to have the current parliament when clicking on the cat. Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 05:34, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

I've made a mess

While trying to undo a page move I have produced more chaos: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:%C7%83Karas_Region&diff=prev&oldid=595836571 Now there is one ǃKaras Region and one !Karas Region, with different talk on both talk pages, and I cannot see which is which. (The one '!' is a simple exclamation mark, and the other one the IPA symbol for the click in Khoekhoe) Could someone please:

  1. merge the talk pages to the page with the IPA symbol,
  2. check if the requested move is on the right page, alternatively repair the RM entry?
  3. Undo my move if it moved from 'IPA symbol !' to 'Exclamation mark !'

Both pages exist, but the one with simple exclamation mark is just a redirect to one with the IPA symbol. Talk:!Karas_Region is redundant though, just add {{delete|duplicate of Talk:ǃKaras Region}} onto it. —Gryllida (talk) 11:04, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

DYK nom - Mary Potter

Hello again! I was wondering if you are willing to nominate Mary Potter (painter) for DYK? The key creators are User:Jasmine 51 and me. A possible hook might be: "...that in 1957, painter Mary Potter swapped houses on the east coast of England with composer Benjamin Britten?" All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:49, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Sure, will do, but only on Tuesday. Still busy over the weekend. Happy Easter, Pgallert (talk) 09:50, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Another DYK: Lyndsie Holland

One more?: I am the creator. A suggested hook: ... that Lyndsie Holland played 12 of the Gilbert and Sullivan contralto roles with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company? [Also, should we add the image?] I hope you had a nice holiday! -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:36, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Will do, but today I'm tired. Easter was nice, repairing our playground with my two small boys. They like that more than actually playing on it, and it is a welcome contrast to my office job. Hope you had a rewarding weekend, too. Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 20:06, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
Done, see Template:Did you know nominations/Lyndsie Holland. The picture is not allowed (fair use) and would probably not be very attractive at 100x100 size. --Pgallert (talk) 08:51, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Pinafore, and so she left the cast. -- Ssilvers (talk) 16:47, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

In the past few days I got several emails stating that I have requested new passwords, on several Wikimedia projects, when I definitely haven't. Should I be concerned, and if yes, to which board should I carry my concern? Thanks --Pgallert (talk) 19:59, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

The only concern is that, if your email is not secure, someone hacking it could get your new password.
Schoene Gruesse, --Pgallert (talk) 19:44, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Oral citations experiment - Namibia 2014

Hello Pgallert! I noticed a conversation between you and Isla Haddow just below my interaction with Isla. I'm very interested in attending and participating in this Participatory Design conference. Although I might not have in-depth expertise of Indigenous knowledge systems, I have been on Wikipedia for eight years - reasonably active (I'm sure you're well aware of the internet access issues in Southern Africa). By October, I would have come up to speed with Indigenous knowledge systems - already, I find your work engaging (I've seen your draft Chapter 1) and totally agree that more work must be done to reflect how other cultures transmit their knowledge. What can I do to participate? I know people in Namibia who might be able to offer me accommodation (allowing me to devote more funding to travelling - I will need funding I must mention). Part (talk) 12:56, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Dear Part, you probably already saw Wikipedia:Oral citations experiment. If you want to be considered you would have to pick a topic from the list at the bottom of that page and develop its content. The deadline has long passed, but if you can do that before or on August 10 I could still consider your application. Just let me know if you have further questions. Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 13:42, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Pgallert. I have chosen hunting of the Mbanderu people. Despite my best efforts, I cannot find any information on this topic. The culture of the Mbanderu people seems to overlap with that of the e.g. Herero people, but there is still scant information with respect to hunting. Part (talk) 00:55, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
This is as much as I could find: "Using dogs and traps are the traditional methods of hunting. [1]." I could not make this into a distinct Hunting section because of limited information, so I put it under Culture. Hopefully this can be expanded with oral knowledge/citations. Please see Mbanderu people.
Hello Pgallert. What's the way forward regarding my attendance of the October workshop? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Part (talkcontribs) 09:09, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
Hello Pgallert. I saw your email - I don't mind if you make public your reason(s) for rejection. I am of the opinion the community should know because attempts are being made to build Wikipedia representation in Africa. Part (talk) 21:39, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
PS. I did not put a bare url as a reference - "Comparison of edits on Mbanderu people article". You added "{Reflist}" to your talk page where I had forgotten to put it - apologies for implying you added "{Reflist} to the Mbanderu people article. Part (talk) 11:10, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: "Peter Gallert grant application" Please note the extra {} were omitted from reflist.

Although you say I do not have the appropriate level of expertise in referencing, here is an article I created - one of several - where I have referenced. In this article I have more than 25 references which have stood the test of time (more than ~5 years online), an infobox, reference even books, have external links, categories, re-direct page, etc. Example article Part (talk) 11:26, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Dear Part, I did not agree to have my emails published here, please do not insert them again. The article in question is from 2009, is the only article without large unreferenced pieces that you ever produced, and still the majority of the references contains just title, accessdate, and url. While not strictly 'bare references' in Wikipedia-speak, they are still missing authors, publishers, pagination, context... in other words, all what will be important in the context of our workshop.

To quote from the grants document: The workshop facilitators vet the entries that have been produced, as well as the general Wikipedia experience of the applicants. Prospective participants must, as a minimum, have produced content on English Wikipedia that still exists, and that even after thorough scrutiny would not be deleted or be peppered with maintenance templates. --Pgallert (talk) 11:45, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
I was not hunting for singular errors. I'm sorry and understand that you are disappointed, and will give some more detail via email. Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 12:00, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
"the only article without large unreferenced pieces that you ever produced" I don't know if these articles I've produced have large unreferenced regions or are large unreferenced pieces Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, etc Part (talk) 15:18, 20 August 2014 (UTC) Articles I've created found here HERE Part (talk) 15:23, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Dear Part, I do know how to get the list of the articles you created, there is no need to shout at me by bolding your posts, and I'm not sure if it makes sense to discuss their referencing here, as I seem not to have the ability to bring my concerns across. If you are interested in particular reviews, maybe we can lead that discussion on the respective article talk pages? --Pgallert (talk) 15:43, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
I was just providing evidence, because I don't think it's true that "the only article without large unreferenced pieces that (I) you ever produced" was that one. I try and make it as easy as possible for anyone to quickly verify my evidence. Part (talk) 15:56, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
You write, "there is no need to shout at me by bolding your posts". You are free to have your interpretation of me shouting. I was not shouting at you - I started using bold face above, that was not directed at you. Also, in the text you removed Deleted text, before my alleged shouting occurred, I in fact put in bold what you were writing, not what I was writing. I use bold font, and/or color to make it easier for readers to identify who is writing and also to highlight what I deem to be important text. You put some text in italics, which originally was not in italics. I did not interpret this as shouting. Part (talk) 19:23, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Before you asked me to try and work on something, you had access to my editing history. It is only after I tried working on something that you raise concerns about my previous editing; concerns which I find debatable. Part (talk) 20:01, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

New DYK nomination?

Hello! Would you mind nominating Colleen Ballinger for DYK? A hook could be: "...that YouTuber and comedian Colleen Ballinger was nominated for a 2014 Teen Choice Award?"

Feel free to substitute a better hook if you can think of one. Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 15:39, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Done, see: Template:Did you know nominations/Colleen Ballinger. I won't have much time to watch this though, am very busy at the moment. Cheers, --Pgallert (talk) 19:11, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! Don't worry, I'll watch it. -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:28, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
Hmmm. No one has reviewed it yet. -- Ssilvers (talk) 08:08, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
There is frequently a backlog at DYK. My own nomination is two weeks older than yours and hasn't been touched either. --Pgallert (talk) 16:56, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
OK, cool beans. -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:05, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Namibische Einzelmeisterschaft im Schach

Hallo Peter.

Danke fuers Nachhaken, Beste Gruesse, Pgallert (talk) 06:43, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

I volunteered to take over review of David Hume

Hello Pgallert. I feel bad about this. I have not yet read the article but have read the review. I am sorry the nominator was not willing to accommodate your review notes; perhaps they should have; they seem reasonable. I hope I do not have the same problem. I will go ahead and start a new sub-section of the current review and try to accomplish this. Or, perhaps you would prefer to fail the review first; if so, that would be agreeable. Please feel free to elaborate on the GA page or below with any frustrations or suggestions you have. Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 15:55, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

Dear Prhartcom, thanks for taking over. A half-finished GA review is always a waste of time. After so long a discussion, I am myself not 100% sure anymore whether or not I'm going over the top with my requests (that's the reason for the 2ndopinion request), so I think it is best if you take over the remaining three points: the quotes on my request, and the other two points on the request of the nominator. Of course you are also free to raise any other points, as my initial review was based on the assumption that there would be a substantial rewrite, and that I would look into each paragraphs wording only after that is done. I was pondering whether I should make the point to the nominator that I am the reviewer, not he, but that would have unnecessarily fanned the flames. Make sure you're not running into the same direction.
I feel I have by now made my position abundantly clear, but if you have further questions don't hesitate to contact me... preferably here, I think there already was sufficient drama on the GA talk. Cheers, and good luck, --Pgallert (talk) 18:38, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank-you, Pgallert. I'm glad to hear you have no problem with this idea. The nominator was giving up; he left a note on the GAN Talk page saying this, and I hated to see such a thing. Yes, this may mean I may run into an issue too. I have been on both sides of this, as I suppose you have also, so I can at least empathize. Thank-you also for your offer to discuss this right here; if needed I will surely do so. I see that another editor whom I have worked with in the past has also volunteered to assist me, so perhaps all will go well. I think it would probably be good if you failed the review now; that way your decision will have it's proper ending with loose ends tied up from your point of view and will enable me to start with a fresh page; He told me he expects you will do this and I've informed him to be ready to start a new nomination when you do so. Don't think I won't refer back to your review for guidance, though! Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 18:55, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
