Hello, it looks like you're going through same confusion I did when trying to work out the best names for various aerial cable transit systems! I'm trying to find some good references and explanations but it's not a thoroughly covered topic online. The best I can find is The Gondola Project. I did a big proposal for category renames some years ago but never progressed it - I'll try to find the link! -- Chuq (talk) 03:41, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Who added this?
The article on the unit Bar could use some additional information. What are the fundamental units of Bar (Kg/cm^2)? And the article reads like the SI committee won't accept it as a SI Metric unit of pressure for reasons other than it is NOT compatible with the modern SI Metric System! It is no more compatible than accepting an imperial unit of pressure such as PSI. In the SI System, mass and weight/force are two completely different things. If you multiply pressure by area in the SI Metric System, you get force; namely, a Newton (Kg meter/sec^2). Multiply Bar by area and you get Kilograms. That mass has to be converted to weight/force to bring it into the SI Metric System. How can you do any numerical analysis with an ambiguity of not knowing if a person means kilograms as mass or kilograms as force if kilograms can have an accepted double definition. How long has the SI Metric System been officially adopted by "metric countries" now and people still can't let go of the past.
Please sign.
- The relationship between the bar (unit) and the kilopascal is simple and direct. Both are derived in a similar manner. So 1 bar (100.0 kilopascals; 1.0 kilogram-force per square centimetre) or 100 kilopascals (1.0 bar; 1.0 kilogram per square centimetre). So the bar, the hectare and the stere fall in the same category, namely older metric units that are still in use. The fact that they are not included in the International System of Units is for daily purposes immaterial. Incidentally, the one who added this note appears to be an American who, as usual, is totally unfamiliar with the metric system. It is kg, not Kg. Peter Horn User talk 16:05, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Photos from Myanmar
Dear Mr. Horn, There was no clarification concerning two photos which I posted in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Miscellaneous&diff=next&oldid=887320264#Myanmar_railways.
And also:
Is it, in fact, a Guard rail? The term here is guard rail, dual gauge it is not. Peter Horn User talk 02:17, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Perhaps you can help...
Thank you! ¬¬¬¬
- @Etan J. Tal: ¬¬¬¬ is the WRONG way to sign. I doubt that there'd be dual gauge in Myanmar. See Rail transport in Myanmar, so it may be a guard rail. Peter Horn User talk 13:53, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Etan J. Tal: I found that there is now dual gauge in Yangon. It looks like dual gauge 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) standard gauge / 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) metre gauge? The difference does not appear to be big enough.
- Thank you for your prompt answer. The rails photo was taken in Pekon 19° 51′ 03.14″ N, 97° 01′ 32.62″ E (not in Yangon). Is it a Guard rail or a dual Gauge? Could you clarify the other photos too? Etan J. Tal(talk) 20:52, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I’m a volunteer at the Texas Transportation Museum. I saw your addition to the L&W page about the tracks being constructed by the Texas Transportation Company. This is false. Hi Peter, I'm confused. You redirected counterweight handbrake to the non-existent German Wiki de:Wurfhebel-Handbremse. Fifty-Fifty
Thank you for your edit to the disambiguation page Fifty-Fifty. However, please note that disambiguation pages are not articles; rather, they are meant to help readers find a specific article quickly and easily. From the disambiguation dos and don'ts, you should:
- Only list articles that readers might reasonably be looking for
- Use short sentence fragment descriptions, with no punctuation at the end
- Use exactly one navigable link ("blue link") in each entry
- Only add a "red link" if used in existing articles, and include a "blue link" to an appropriate article
- Do not pipe links (unless style requires it) – keep the full title of the article visible
- Do not insert external links or references
Thank you.
- I have modified your addition to Fifty-Fifty. I removed the reference and reflist, and added a link to Ball valve. Leschnei (talk) 13:22, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
Broken infobox
Hallo, this edit of yours seems to have broken the infobox. I don't know enough about the infobox to fix it short of just reverting your edit. Could you please have a look and fix it? Thanks. I removed a pair of "}}" which were showing up in the display but there's more. PamD 06:21, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
- @PamD:. Fixed. The "extra" "}}" are very much a part of the template. Peter Horn User talk 13:14, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
- @PamD: The problem was here, an extra pair of "}}" that should not have been there. BH'F|0.0|Scheuerfeld WEBA||}} → Peter Horn User talk 13:25, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I could see that you'd added that "}}" - I tried moving them to after the "F" in that field but that didn't work, so at that point decided you could fix it better than me. Removing the other pair improved the look of the non-infobox part of the article. Seems a seriously complicated infobox! Thanks for fixing. These things happen - my computer has odd habit of moving the insertion point to the wrong place while I'm typing which can produce weird stuff if not noticed. PamD 16:06, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
- @PamD: That extra "}}" should simply not have gotten there at all. It was a "typo". I only became aware of that snag until I compared the copy and paste version to the previous version. However "}}}}" at the very end is correct. Peter Horn User talk 16:32, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

- I removed most of that because it's confusing. This can be solved but it needs investigation. How is your laptop connecting to the internet at the moment? Is it using a wifi connection or a phone connection? Does your laptop use some VPN software to connect to the internet via a VPN? Roughly how long will you be in Mexico? A week, a few months, indefinitely? The point of that question is that there are some temporary workarounds that can be applied if you are only there for a limited period. @ST47: Can you please look at this (you blocked Special:Contributions/31.14.72.0/24). I know of Peter Horn's work and he is definitely not purposely doing anything strange. Johnuniq (talk) 00:47, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- The laptop is connected to the internet by WiFi to the modem of the cable provider Megacable https://www.megacable.com.mx which also provides me with WiFi for my Apple Ipad as well as a land telephone line and TV. I'll be using the same service until about 2020 04 10 Peter Horn User talk 02:50, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- I think there will be a solution soon, see User talk:ST47/Archive20#31.14.72.0/24. Johnuniq (talk) 03:48, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Johnuniq:, @Peter Horn:, it looks like this IP address range is used by a VPN. Per the proxy checker, it is likely to be a hosting provider, which VPN companies usually use to host their serevrs. If you disable your VPN, you should easily be able to edit. You may need to clear your cookies from en.wikipedia.org (or simply wait 24 hours) after disabling the VPN, due to a MediaWiki feature called a "cookie block". ST47 (talk) 03:56, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- @ST47: Thanks but I don't think that is going to be a solution here as I asked above and Peter says he is temporarily in Mexico and is using Megacable to connect to the internet, and that appears to be an ISP. From the above, Peter does not appear to be using a VPN. How about I allow logged-in users from that range? Johnuniq (talk) 04:04, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Johnuniq: The range 31.14.72.0/24 is a hosting range, the current block settings are correct. The most likely explanation is that some VPN service is being used. If Peter isn't intentionally using one, it's possible that it's something bundled with their web browser or their security software. The WHOIS data on that range is very confusing, I'm having a hard time figuring out what PRCDN is, but the ownership is clearly Softlayer, not Megacable. ST47 (talk) 04:08, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- Actually, I think it might be Avast. Possibly Avast SecureLine VPN? ST47 (talk) 04:10, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- I think there will be a solution soon, see User talk:ST47/Archive20#31.14.72.0/24. Johnuniq (talk) 03:48, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
I granted you a user right known as IP block exemption (IPBE). That will allow you to edit Wikipedia from an IP address that has been blocked. The exemption will expire in six months. I'm not sure when you will be able to edit—it might be now, or it might be after a delay of 24 hours. If there is a problem, reply here and I will investigate. Johnuniq (talk) 05:40, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- @ST47: @Johnuniq: My IP address is 70.24.224.136. It was not blocked the previous time that I was in Mexico and used the same cable provider. I don't use Avast but AVG. I'll be back in Canada in Aprij and back with Videotron Peter Horn User talk 01:18, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- Strange, the AVG I deal with is based in Amsterdam. Peter Horn User talk 01:23, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- Avast and AVG apparently have the same ownership now. You probably ran a setup program supplied by AVG and it installed various software on your laptop. Part of that probably was a VPN which causes your laptop to communicate over the internet using an AVG server with an IP address in the 31.14.72.X range. Anyone can install the same AVG software and use their VPN server. That makes it an "open proxy" which is why it was blocked. That is not a problem for you during the next six months because of the IPBE right. However, if you use the laptop after six months, you will have the original problem and you would need to find a better solution because IPBE is for exceptional and temporary circumstances.By the way, in the future you should consider using better anti-virus software such as Avira. For example, see this story about how Avast/AVG browser extensions have apparently been exploiting customer privacy. I have seen other reports that they are not optimum. London Underground Sidebar on station articles
Hi Peter, I noticed that you have added template London Underground sidebar to a number of articles on tube stations. As per the template documentation, this template is designed to be used only on those articles that it links directly to as it can cause clutter on station articles.--DavidCane (talk) 19:07, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Question
Hello Peter,
I wonder whether or not this was an accident. I have never seen internal combustion engine swept volume in gallons, and I reckon that is because it would be very difficult to work with it. It's best if we stick to anything raised to the power of three. Best regards, --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 23:27, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- I just finished correcting that. Peter Horn User talk 23:39, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hello Peter, I generally don't mind additions to articles that I have created, but I would appreciate if they appeared a bit more reasonable. Frankly speaking, I doubt that your edits were improvements at all, since you added a couple of little errors to every single article that you have edited, and these errors required fixing. However, some of your edits have clearly demonstrated (at least to me) that your intent was "North-Americanising" these articles rather than improving them. I have seen removal of sourced information because you didn't understand that information, and wikitext comments such as "in North America, we NEVER use this and that". The Unimog isn't North American, and its description in the English Wikipedia doesn't have to be "North American reader friendly", it just has to be in English, which it is (and was). I like sticking to the source information, and if it's "not North American", the article becomes "not North American". As long as the source information is not obviously erroneous, that is fine! There is a lot of differences between "North American" and "European", and we can't make Wikipedia homogeneous. I make a lot of errors myself, especially spelling errors, but in your 19 edits to the Unimog 421 article, you didn't make any apparent attempts of fixing them. So please, be a bit more careful. Best regards, --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 13:40, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Johannes Maximilian: Hello Johannes,
I try not to introduce errors but I tend to work fast so at times it happens. That said some models of Unimog are probably sold in N. America and like in the case of passenger car engines and even of diesel locomotive engines, the engine displacement is given L. Formerly it was given in cubic inches. In addition our American friends and readers do not know what is a kW and even less often what is a PS. Anyway, it is a Wiki convention that if a vehicle of any sort is dimensioned the metric dimensions are given first and by using template:convert the imperial measures follow generally in brackets. If the vehicle of any sort is dimensioned in imperial measures then by using template:convert the metric dimensions follow generally in brackets. Most Americans are quite unfamiliar with the metric system and even dislike it, if not actually hate it. Peter Horn User talk 23:38, 15 June 2020 (UTC)- Hello Peter, as I've said, I generally don't mind these additions. But outside the US, engineers usually don't stick to US conventions. I find it a bit bizarre to assume that Daimler-Benz would immediately abandon the conventions associated with the metric system if a vehicle is sold in the US; in this particular case, the Unimog was not even sold in the US. What I actually found to be unfelicitous was the way you put the convert templates into tables that aren't covering technical specifications. I'd say that I've put some thought into sorting Unimog models, types, and series so the reader somehow gets an idea; I wanted to put as few information in there as possible, but still enough information for the reader to be able to get the key points. It wasn't meant to be "exact" wheelbase/engine power output figures. For instance, instead of writing something like "wheelbase 1234 mm", I could have written long/short wheelbase; and instead of engine power output "23 kW", I could have listed the engine model. I've chosen to put actual figures since I felt they were saying the same thing in an easier way. But with the addition of the convert template, some fields now have up to nine different numbers, which I find to be too much. I was also confused by the removal of kilopondmetres (something that was very common in West Germany in the 1950s and 1960s), as well as the conversion from litres into gallons for engine displacement. On your user page you write that you are a retired draughtsman; I am not a draughtsman by profession, but at university, I attended mechanical draughting classes, and to me, designing a cylinder using inches and having a cubic inch displacement figure makes perfect sense. But a gallons figure doesn't; I'd assume it's something liquid that I'd pour into the fuel tank or oil filler neck. I reckon my message has got too long already, so I stop here. Have a good evening! Best wishes, --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 01:18, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Johannes Maximilian: Hello again
This is NOT about manufacturing practices and standards of any given company. Instead this about giving cyclopedic info to two culturally different groups readers. One group of readers understands only the imperial system and the other group or readers, the majority, understands only the metric system. Personally I'm of a third group that understands both but prefers metric. Decades ago I owned in Canada in turn at different times three NSU cars. As was the marketing custom at the pre metriction days, the displacement one was marketed as 996 cc (60.8 cu in) (4 cylinder) the other two were marketed as 600 cc (37 cu in) (Two cylinder). The cc is a N American aberration but used on Wiki within historical contexts. IPBE
Hi Peter, I apologize for the delay in getting back to you, today was a busy work day! As you've seen above, I did not directly block you, it's related to a (possibly misconfigured) service provider on your end. However, You've been here for ~15 years, and have ~90,000 edits, and had IPBE (which allows you to bypass this sort of block) up until a couple weeks ago (it had expired 21 June 2020). I also see that a steward issued you global IPBE - which will help somewhat, but you will need local IPBE in order to bypass this block.
Anyhow - I've granted you local IPBE for another year (which is the longest duration that I typically give out). If the situation is still the same in a year, just ask for it again (the preferred method is laid out at WP:IPECPROXY, for reference next year if needed - but I don't mind being pinged).
If there's anything else I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask. SQLQuery me! 21:23, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
IP block exempt
I have granted your account an exemption from IP blocking. This will allow you to edit the English Wikipedia through full blocks affecting your IP address when you are logged in.
Please read the page Wikipedia:IP block exemption carefully, especially the section on IP block exemption conditions. Inappropriate usage of this user right may result in revocation. I hope this will enhance your editing, and allow you to edit successfully and without disruption. SQLQuery me! 21:23, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

- Err - no - you added it in this edit at 01.29 and I deleted it in this one at 12.00 - Best wishes - Arjayay (talk) 12:18, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Stock car (rail) into another page. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from page name; see that page's history for attribution
. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted copied template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was copied, attribution is not required. — Diannaa (talk) 10:48, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Diannaa: Thanks for the info and directions. Would it be necessary to do this retroactively or do I keep this work when needed in the future? Peter Horn User talk 12:36, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
- You can add the attribution retroactively - I have already done so for the ones I found. If you could remember to do it in the future that would be perfect. Thanks,— Diannaa (talk) 12:40, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

- @MB: I would have no way of knowing that. So how do we fix that? By the way South Australian Railways T class is 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) gauge, not 5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm) gauge as listed in

Stanley Steamers
Hi Peter, I don't wish to dampen your enthusiasm for contributing to the Stanley Motor Carriage Company. It was with regret that I deleted mention of your museum, because I couldn't find a link to an image or description of a Stanley Steamer. I removed a number of other items in the External links section, because they didn't conform to WP:LINKSTOAVOID. I encourage you to do a compilation of exhibits with steamers on display, as verified by each museum website. Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 20:43, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Hickory Island (disambiguation)
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Hickory Island (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
- disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
- is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Speedy deletion nomination of Log cradle container
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Log cradle container, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Log cradle
Please note that disambiguation pages like Log cradle are meant to help readers find a specific existing article quickly and easily. For that reason, they have guidelines that are different from articles. From the Wikipedia:Disambiguation dos and don'ts you should:
- Only list articles that readers might reasonably be looking for
- Use short sentence fragment descriptions, with no punctuation at the end
- Use exactly one navigable link ("blue link") in each entry that mentions the title being disambiguated
- Only add a "red link" if used in existing articles, and include a "blue link" to an appropriate article
- Do not pipe links (unless style requires it) – keep the full title of the article visible
- Do not insert external links or references - Wikipedia is not a business directory
Thank you. Leschnei (talk) 13:08, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Royal Wolf
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Royal Wolf requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion".
