The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Hi, Erpduo, and welcome to Wikipedia!
Right now your first concern is your username – Wikipedia has a very specific username policy. Specifically, accounts cannot be shared or used by more than one person, and cannot represent a company or corporation as a whole. Since the account username is against policy, your account has been softblocked for now; you can request an unblock and name change by putting {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}. at the bottom of your talk page, where there are also more detailed instructions for changing your username and getting unblocked.
You appear to have a conflict of interest (COI), which is when you are editing Wikipedia about someone you have an external relationship with. More specifically, you are a paid contributor, which means you are required to disclose that information as explained here before editing about the subject, and you should follow the instructions in this section of the conflict of interest guideline.
I assume by "register [your company]", you mean "create an article for the company" – Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and contains articles about subjects; its purpose is not self-promotion. As a result, creating an article can be difficult on Wikipedia, and paid editors must do so by putting their drafts through the Articles for Creation process. You will first need to determine if the subject of the article is notable by Wikipedia's definition; a corporation must be notable to have a Wikipedia article. (If a subject is truly notable, someone unrelated often will come along and write an article independently of the company.) If notability is determined, you will then need to make sure that you follow the other core policies. Wikipedia articles must be verifiable and keep a neutral point of view, the latter of which in particular can be difficult for a paid editor.
You should also know that should the article be created and accepted, it will not belong to you or your company. (See also the essay An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing.) Part of why there are so many rules paid editors have to follow is because Wikipedia does not allow self-promotion or advertising and it is contrary to its purpose.

Yes, you have to have made ten or more edits and have had an account for four or mays to be automatically confirmed, which allows you to move articles or pages. I made some revisions to an article about Tales of Legendia yesterday (1/10/2023) which you reversed, and I received your message today explaining why and what I can do to be sure these things work out. Specifically, you advised me to properly source the information that I added. You also linked me to an article (Referencing For Beginners) which I began to read. This encouraged me to work out a reply for you, and that encouraged me to create an account rather than replying from just an IP address.

So, I have to figure out how to properly cite/source the game itself, since that is my source of information.

Reliable sources are pretty important on Wikipedia; since video games can be harder to source well, editors created a list of sources and a measure of their reliability to make it easier, and there's even a search engine just for those sources (all credit to Panini! for knowing that, I'm not a video game editor). Hi, Jabes14! I'm sorry, but you shouldn't. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and that goes against several of our policies.
Think of it like Encyclopedia Britannica or World Book – would you expect to publish a blog in one of those? Wikipedia differs from them in some ways because of its format, but it's not designed for that. You can take a look at some alternative places for it included in this list, though.

Hello! I have a question. Is it okay to place more than two citation references next to each other after a sentence's period? For example, I have this sentence: "Everglow performed in nine different countries in a year without a formal tour: Saudi Arabia, South Korea, England, Australia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Netherlands, and the Philippines."

I have a reference for each country on the list. At first, I placed each citation after each country and its comma, but i found it hard to read, so I ended up placing all of the citations at the end of the sentence. Is that okay? --HoneyKpop (talk) 03:32, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

That's perfectly all right – Wikipedia:Citing sources says an inline citation is any citation added close to the material it supports, for which this seems to qualify just fine, and improving readability is a noble goal as well. Hi, Coryannyyz, and welcome! Sorry for the late reply, I’ve had a busy weekend. It is indeed a music reference. (I’m so excited someone got it!) I’m afraid real life commitments are hitting me hard right now, and I likely won’t be able to look at much beyond surface level for a few days. I did skim your sandbox and I didn’t see any major issues. I will give you a heads up that creating a new article is difficult for new editors because it takes a while to become familiar with Wikipedia’s policies and guidelines (check out Wikipedia:Everything you need to know for a simplified overview).
Feel free to upload pictures, though you should make sure the copyright is taken care of. For the process of doing so,Help:Pictures explains how to add an image into an article. If you want to add an image that's not yet on Wikimedia Commons (a sister website hosting pictures), Wikipedia:Uploading images has an explanation. You can also check out Wikipedia:Image use policy (policies about using images).

Thank you, @Perfect4th! I skimmed over the discussions in the Teahouse and found them interesting. Most seem to be people asking why their contributions were removed or declined. I learned one can request review, which is more or less what I am seeking. However, I'm very confident in my use of reliable, verifiable sources... I'm a published academic, so that is what I do! I'm less confident about tone and etiquette. It is a different kind of writing style and collaborative writing than I've done before. Perhaps I am being over cautious and should just go ahead and post the segment on the article page. No problem, Coryannyyz! The Teahouse is designed to be helpful for completely new editors as well as those who have a little more experience, so it gets a lot of beginner questions; however, most of the hosts have been around a while and can answer pretty much anything. Good to hear you have a good grasp of sources – that'll get you a long way. For the picture, I think it would be fine to go ahead and change it, and if someone thinks it was better previously it can be reverted and discussed. I saw your other talk page question and I'm afraid I don't know; I've not worked with images myself. You could try asking on a talk page like Wikipedia talk:Wikimedia Commons, but it's not very high-traffic, so you might do better at the Teahouse or the Help desk.
I did look over your sandbox a bit more for tone, and most of it looks pretty good. The sentence The new hall, designed by Eugene Burgmann, attempted to maintain the blue-themed ocean and sky ambiance of the original hall, but with softer lighting and more intimate spaces. gets a bit less encyclopedic; describing the ambiance and intimate spaces doesn't quite fit with the the information style (and also, I'd remove "cozy" from the following sentence for similar reasons). Newcomer experience projects

The Growth team partnered with other WMF teams to conduct several experiments around increasing account creation and new editor retention. Results from four of these experiments are now available:

Newcomer tasks

  • Several communities suggested improving "add a link", by suggesting underlinked articles first. We released this change to Growth pilot wikis. We will review the data and collect feedback before considering releasing it to more wikis. [1]
  • The deployment of the "add a link" to all Wikipedias is still in progress. Suggested links use a prediction model, which has to be trained. The deployments will resume after we finish training all models. [2]

Mentorship

  • When someone wants to signup as a mentor, they are now informed if they don't meet the defined criteria. [3]
  • Workshop hosts asked us to have workshop attendees assigned to them. They can soon use a custom URL parameter. This way, workshop hosts will continue mentoring the event's attendees after the workshop. It will be available in February. [4]
  • Have you considered to help new editors on your wiki, by signing up to be a Mentor?

Hi, Chilicave! Sorry for the late response. Wikipedia’s guide for this kind of thing is called the Manual of Style. I’m not familiar with the issue myself, but based on the foreign italics section, I think continued italics are correct. Hope this helps, and happy editing! I was browsing through the reference list on the Vijayadashami article and I noticed that there are two citations that lead to the same article: "Dussehra | Festival, Meaning, Puja, & Significance | Britannica" and also this one Encyclopedia Britannica Dussehra 2015. This second one also links to a bibliography at the bottom of the page. Is that correct? Also, I'm still a little confused on how to appropriately get rid of duplicate links. Hi again, Chilicave! My deepest apologies for taking so long to get back to you. I had a project due yesterday and forgot to mark myself away.
For your question, it looks to me like the second is used more like a general reference as described here, though it is labeled a bibliography. That is probably okay – what matters most is that you provide enough information to identify the source (from Wikipedia:Citing sources).
When you say duplicate links, are you referring to citations or in-wiki links? You can install user scripts like this one to help with the latter.

For duplicate links, the Manual of Style duplicate link guidance is intended for in-wiki links, but if you come across citations that are duplicates, you can remove them too (check to make sure that what they support is properly linked to the remaining citation, though). So I'm editing a page on an Indian woman musician - Veenai Dhanammal - and it's still very underdeveloped. When reading about her career, there is a quote that is the length of a paragraph that has been added to that particular section. Although it can be verified, can such a lengthy quote be placed there? Also, is there a way to tag that particular section saying that it needs to be rewritten or rephrased? In looking at the quotes information page, the short answer is that I'm seeing that lengthy quotes are allowed with limitations but not encouraged, and probably shouldn't be used in this case. Long answer: this section describes how copyright relates to it: quoted material should not be a substantial portion of the work being quoted. I don't have access to the source document, so I'm not sure about how well the specific issue fits that. It is also mentioned, however, that [e]ditors are advised to exercise good judgment and to remain mindful that while brief excerpts are permitted by policy, extensive quotations are forbidden. There's no set length limit, but considering that the quote is half of the career section, it's probably too long.
For the template, I think the best fit here is {{Long quote}}. I'm not aware of a single template for a section to be generally rewritten for that reason, but Wikipedia's template index is extensive, so there could be one (or maybe just one for every specific issue that could ever occur, who knows).

I've redirected the content form the Hindola page to the Jhulan Purnima page by following WP:Merge. While reading this policy, I got a little bit confused about reconciling talk pages. Chilicave, the only content you need on a redirect page is the redirect itself, not article content, so you can remove that from Hindola. You'll also want to document on Talk:Hindola that the article content was merged to the ariticle Jhulan Purnima rather than its talk page. Hello and welcome to the March 2023 newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since December and our Annual Report for 2022. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. We extend a warm welcome to all of our new members, including those who have signed up for our current March Backlog Elimination Drive. We wish you all happy copy-editing.

Election results: In our December 2022 coordinator election, Reidgreg and Tenryuu stepped down as coordinators; we thank them for their service. Incumbents Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo were returned as coordinators until 1 July. For the second time, no lead coordinator was chosen. Nominations for our mid-year Election of Coordinators open on 1 June (UTC).

Drive: 21 editors signed up for our January Backlog Elimination Drive, 14 of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Between them, they copy-edited 170 articles totaling 389,737 words. Barnstars awarded are here.

Blitz: Our February Copy Editing Blitz focused on October and November 2022 requests, and the March and April 2022 backlogs. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine claimed at least one copy-edit; and between them, they copy-edited 39,150 words in 22 articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Drive: Sign up now for our month-long March Backlog Elimination Drive. Barnstars awarded will be posted here after the drive closes.

First off, I am so sorry that I took so long to respond – real life got really crazy and I didn't mark myself as away, which was my fault.
For your question, basically, what I'm seeing at Wikipedia:Moving a page is that you want to move it over a redirect. It may be possible to do so as described here, but because there are two edits in the edit history, even though one of them is just maintenance, you may need to make a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests instead.

Hello!

It's me, CrowEater! I'm not dead, and my userpage isn't redlinked (yet), so I'd say I've been doing pretty darn well for myself. You said I could ask you a question if I needed any help, so, here we are I guess.

I'm (trying) to copyedit S-300 missile system, and right around the "Land-based S-300P (SA-10)" section, it references this page: "http://www8.janes.com/Search/documentView.do?docId=/content1/janesdata/yb/jlad/jlad0108.htm". Now, there was an 8 that somehow snuck in after the www, and after thoroughly squashing it into oblivion, I was led to a fun little "error 404" page.

I've read my fair share of Wikipedia policy articles, so I'm pretty confident that being unable to verify if a source even exists is really bad. I'm not sure what proper procedure would be in this case. Finding an alternative source is above my paygrade as a copyeditor, so how can I flag this and make it someone else's problem?

5,000+ images added via the newcomer task in February

  • In February 2023, 5,035 images were added via the newcomer “add an image” feature (on all wikis where available); 155 were reverted.
  • Since the feature “add an image” was launched: 36,803 images have been added; 2,957 images were reverted.

Recent changes

  • Add a link
    • Community Ambassadors completed an initial evaluation that confirmed that prioritizing underlinked articles resulted in better article suggestions. We then evaluated the change on Growth pilot wikis, and results suggest that more newcomers are successfully completing the task and experiencing fewer reverts. We have now deployed the new prioritization model to all wikis with "add a link" enabled. [6][7]
    • We continue the deployment of "add a link" to more wikis. These changes are regularly announced in Tech News. To know if newcomers at your wiki have access to this feature, please visit your Homepage.
  • The Impact module was deployed on our pilot wikis, where we conducted an A/B test. We published initial findings, and a data scientist is now completing experiment analysis. [8]
  • Donor Thank you page experiment – Donors land on a “thank you” page after donation, and that landing page now includes a call to action to try editing: Example Thank you page in French. This promising feature is tested at several Wikipedias (French Wikipedia, Italian Wikipedia, Japanese Wikipedia, Dutch Wikipedia, Swedish Wikipedia).
  • Growth features are now the default experience on both test.wikipedia.org and test2.wikipedia.org. You can test our features there.

HoneyKpop, I'm afraid I'm not entirely sure on this question – I haven't personally worked with pictures much. Looking at the image use policy, it might fall under the 'Own Work' section here as long as the other copyright rules work out correctly (here's the help page about copyright on Wikipedia if you don't already have the link). Sorry I can't give you more specific help on this one, but I would suggest asking elsewhere – you could try the image use policy talk page, but it seems pretty quiet, so you might be better off asking at the Teahouse – there's a number of experienced editors there, so some of them ought to have an answer for your question.

It sounds like you have a conflict of interest (COI), which is when you are editing Wikipedia about yourself or someone you have an external relationship with). More specifically, you are a paid contributor, which means you are required to disclose that information as explained here before editing about the subject, and you should follow the instructions in this section of the conflict of interest guideline.
Creating an article can be difficult on Wikipedia, and paid editors must do so by putting their drafts through the Articles for Creation process. You will first need to determine if the subject of the article is notable by Wikipedia's definition; a company must be notable to have a Wikipedia article. If notability is determined, you will then need to make sure that you follow the other core policies. Wikipedia articles must be verifiable and keep a neutral point of view, the latter of which in particular can be difficult for a paid editor.
You should also know that should the article be created and accepted, it will not belong to you or your company. (See also the essay An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing.) Wikipedia does not allow self-promotion or advertising – it is contrary to its purpose. That's part of why there are so many rules paid editors have to follow.

Hi, MarkScoopit, and welcome.
I'm assuming you're looking to create articles. I'll have to begin you with a word of caution: creating articles is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia. While technical knowledge will help with implementation, it's content that's the most challenging aspect. Wikipedia aims to be an encyclopedia summarizing what reliable, secondary sources say about a subject, and try to make everything traceable back to those sources. Another very important hurdle is notability, which is whether a subject even belongs in the encyclopedia at all; no amount of editing can make something or someone non-notable notable. If you're trying to write about people, you'll need to look at the biography information page; for other subjects, take a look at notability. It's also very important to keep a neutral point of view, which is difficult if you have a conflict of interest (an external relationship with the subject of an article) and requires following additional rules. While the technical ability to create articles comes after an account has been created for four days and made ten edits, it's highly unlikely that any article created at that stage is ready for mainspace, and will probably at least have to be incubated in a draft stage first.
In short, it's much better to wait on creating articles until after a period of making smaller edits and getting much more familiar with content policies. Creating an article is possible, but it requires time and effort for a longer period than most people expect. We passed the 1 million Suggested edits milestone in late April!

  • The Suggested edits feature (AKA Newcomer tasks) increase newcomer activation by ~12%, which flows on through to increased retention. (source)
  • Suggested edits increase the number of edits newcomers complete in their first two weeks and have a relatively low revert rate. (source)
  • Suggested edits are available on all Wikipedia language editions.
  • Newer Suggested edits, like Add a link and Add an image, aren’t yet deployed to all wikis, but these structured tasks further increase the probability that newcomers will make their first edit. (source)

Positive reinforcement

Positive reinforcement aims to encourage newcomers who have visited our homepage and tried Growth features to keep editing.

  • The new Impact module was released to Growth pilot wikis in December 2022, and we are now scaling the feature to another ten wikis. [13]
  • The Leveling up features are deployed at our pilot wikis.
  • The Personalized praise features were deployed at our pilot wikis on May 24. Mentors at pilot wikis will start to receive notifications weekly when they have “praise-worthy” mentees. Mentors can configure their notification preferences or disable these notifications.

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

The short/incomplete answer to your first question is that you don't have to ask anyone else specifically to create an article. On Wikipedia, such profiles are called articles. Creating an encyclopedia article is very difficult on Wikipedia, especially for newcomers, because there are a lot of policies that have to be followed. Wikipedia articles:
  • have to be about notable subjects (subjects that have received significant coverage in multiple reliable sources)
  • have to be verifiable (the information in the article should be traceable to its sources)
  • should be written in a neutral point of view (neither try to look the subject look good nor bad, but simply report facts as indicated by the sources)
Because there's a lot that goes into creating an article, it's recommended newcomers start with other contributions and get a better handle on how the encyclopedia works prior to creating one (you can find some editing suggestions on your homepage). If you still would like to create an article, you should keep the three policies I linked you to earlier (notability, verifiability, and neutrality/neutral point of view) in mind and read this page, which guides you through creating a draft article.
To go back and further answer your first question, a good resource for asking about new articles can be the talk pages of WikiProjects. Wikiprojects are project pages for groups of Wikipedians who share similar interests and discuss them there; they can give you much better advice on specific person notability than I can. The talk page is the discussion page for such a group. Some of them are more active than others, and some are more specialized than others, so you may have varying luck with questions. It looks like the Chess WikiProject is pretty active; you can find the talk page for that here. I wasn't sure what would be the best page for your other interest, but you can look up any WikiProject from this page. One more note about asking on those talk pages: many of the people there can be pretty experienced in that editing area and tend to think others might be too, so if you specify at the beginning that you're a newcomer you may get more helpful/detailed replies. And of course feel free to ask me any further questions you might have! I know this can feel like a lot, but I'm happy to help with any questions you have. Happy editing! This guidance and knowledge is great. Especially for newcomers like myself it allows us to learn, and understand how to use the correct language for a neutral and reputable view point.
I have a question regarding the Savile Row page. As this is my industry and know quite a few Master tailors from The Row for the last 18 years content in which I thought was reputable from sources such as BBC, Daily Mail and Guardian have been deleted from another contributor. They have classed it as promotional material. However researching on other pages I can see links to reputable media companies supporting content within the article. Whats the best way around this. Subjects of articles have to be notable (by Wikipedia's definition) to be included in the encyclopedia. Any article's subject should pass this guideline. I skimmed the apple.com article and it seems to mention the franchise in passing. Unless you have several more reliable sources with more coverage, I'd recommend expanding the section including Tyl in the NatWest article for now. Hi, Rose-Alicia! Sorry for the late response, it's been a busy summer. I'm going to reply to both your comments here to make it easier to follow conversation.
The source one first: I don't think the problem was with your sources necessarily – the BBC and the Guardian are considered generally reliable in their fields (which is, as many things on Wikipedia, something that needs to be evaluated in every case still and not assumed to be okay – it just gives a general guideline). I think the concern was more about sections adhering to the policy about how aspects of an article should be covered. The goal is not to spend too much time on smaller parts of articles that are not as related to the direct subject matter.
One other comment for you: on Sanditon (TV_series) one of your edits apparently messed with the references a bit, so another editor tried to change it back and I think there was a bit of back-and-forth there. Often editors, especially those who've been here longer, will explain their edits in an edit summary so that other editors don't have to guess at their purpose in it. In this case, the editor later mentioned it on your talk page – you can respond there and collaborate with the other editor on working on that page.

Annual plan for Growth

We shared our annual plan, for the period July 2023 - June 2024.

Our first project of the year will be Community configuration 2.0, which helps editors with extended rights transparently and easily configure important on-wiki functionality.

After we finish work on Community configuration 2.0, we will hope to fit in one of the following projects:

  • Article creation: This project aims to provide new editors with better guidance and guardrails in the article creation process, with the intention of lightening the load of new page reviewers.
  • Non-editing participation: This project aims to create low-risk ways for readers to participate in Wikipedia with the intention of funneling more readers into contributing to the Wikimedia movement.

Suggested edits

The new "Add an image" section-level task

We released a new Section-level “add an image” structured task to Growth pilot wikis (Arabic, Bengali, Czech, and Spanish). This task was part of the Structured Data Across Wikipedia project. We are monitoring the edits made, and we look for community feedback as well.

Suggested Edits are now receiving topic predictions via the new Language-Agnostic Topic Classification. This change affects non-English Wikipedia wikis. It will ensure newcomers receive a greater diversity of task recommendations. Before, as this feature was a test, English Wikipedia was used to select topics. The change is gradual as lists of topics are refreshed when they become empty. The Research team will evaluate the impact in a few months. [17]

Starting on August 1, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link": Georgian Wikipedia, Kara-Kalpak Wikipedia, Kabyle Wikipedia, Kabardian Wikipedia, Kabiyè Wikipedia, Kikuyu Wikipedia, Kazakh Wikipedia, Khmer Wikipedia, Kannada Wikipedia, Kashmiri Wikipedia, Colognian Wikipedia, Kurdish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia.

Mentorship

The Growth team provides dedicated features to establish a mentorship program for newcomers. Every newcomer gets a volunteer mentor who provides encouragement and answers questions. Communities can set up or join this mentorship system by visiting Special:ManageMentors. This mentorship system is configurable by the community at Special:EditGrowthConfig.

More communities have implemented mentorship. A Wikimedia Foundation data scientist will be looking at the impact of Mentorship. We will look at the impact on Spanish and English Wikipedia. [18]

The Growth team will also host a Mentoring new editors on Wikipedia session at Wikimania 2023 in Singapore. Workshop attendees will help brainstorm improvements to Growth’s mentorship features.

Positive reinforcement

We will share more complete experiment analysis for all the three parts of the Positive reinforcement project soon. At the moment, the new Impact module, Leveling up, and Personalized praise are still being A/B tested on the Growth team's pilot wikis.

In the meantime, initial leading indicators for the Personalized praise project have been published. Although this is still a relatively small sample, results seem healthy. They show that Mentors are indeed receiving notifications and clicking through to view their praise-worthy mentees.

Growth contributes to IP Editing migration

The Growth team is currently focusing on IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation. It is a project that touches many different Wikimedia Foundation teams. The Growth team will focus on temporary accounts through two main points:

  • the user experience of a logged-out user, that switches to a temporary account,
  • change Growth-owned extensions and features, so that they work as expected with temporary accounts. [19]

Community Configuration 2.0

We are still in the early planning stage of the Community Configuration 2.0 project:

  • We are gathering internal Wikimedia Foundation teams' needs, so as community feedback. [20]
  • We have started to investigate design improvements. [21]
  • We are also reviewing similar tools that are part of other products. [22]

Hi, IP user! Yes, the term "military aggression" is not very neutral unless sourced to reliable sources. It's not a very egregious wording given the history there, but still technically not quite worded as it should be without a source. The rest of it looked fine, though. Thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia!
Also, a couple tips: a) you can to sign posts on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~), which makes it easier to reply. Also shameless plug incoming, you can create an account to more easily edit and keep track of conversations with people, as well as other stuff explained on the account page. David Thomsen: Prolific Wikipedian and Guild member David Thomsen (Dthomsen8) died in November 2022. He was a regular copy editor who took part in many of our Drives and Blitzes. An obituary was published in the mid-July issue of The Signpost. Tributes can be left on David's talk page.

Election news: In our mid-year Election of Coordinators, Dhtwiki was chosen as lead coordinator, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo continue as assistant coordinators, and Baffle gab1978 stepped down from the role. If you're interested in helping out at the GOCE, please consider nominating yourself for our next election in December; it's your WikiProject and it doesn't organize itself!

June Blitz: Of the 17 editors who signed up for our June Copy Editing Blitz, 12 copy-edited at least one article. 70,035 words comprising 26 articles were copy-edited. Barnstars awarded are here.

July Drive: 34 of the 51 editors who took part in our July Backlog Elimination Drive copy-edited at least one article. They edited 276 articles and 683,633 words between them. Barnstars awarded are here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Community configuration 2.0

  • Community Configuration 2.0 is a feature that will enable Wikimedia communities to easily customize and configure features to meet their unique needs. This approach provides non-technical moderators with more independence and control over enabling/disabling and customizing features for their communities.
  • Technical approach and associated tasks are detailed in this Epic task on Phabricator.
  • Initial designs are drafted for two different approaches (see images). We will soon demo interactive prototypes to interested admins, stewards, and experienced editors (T346109). Please let us know if you have feedback on the design approach, or want to participate in prototype testing.

IP Masking

  • The Growth team has been working on several updates to ensure Growth maintained features will be compatible with future IP Masking changes. This work has included code changes to: Recent Changes (T343322), Echo notifications (T333531), the Thanks extension (T345679) and Mentorship (T341390).
  • Before December, the Growth team will initiate community discussions with the goal of migrating communities from Flow to DiscussionTools. This move aims to minimize the necessity for additional engineering work to make Flow compatible with IP Masking. (T346108)

Scaling Growth features

  • We continue the deployment of the structured task "add a link" to all Wikipedias. We plan to scale the task to all Wikipedias that have link suggestions available by the end of 2023.
  • We plan to scale the new Impact Module to all Wikipedias soon, but first we are investigating a bug with the job that refreshes the Impact Module data. (T344428)
  • At some wikis, newcomers have access to the "add an image" structured task. This task suggests images that may be relevant to add to unillustrated articles. Newcomers at these wikis can now add images to unillustrated articles sections. (T345940) The wikis that have this task are listed under "Images recommendations" at the Growth team deployment table.

Other news

  • We disabled the “add an image” task temporarily (T345188) because there was a failure in the image suggestions pipeline (T345141). This is now fixed.
  • You can read a report about the Growth team’s representation at Wikimania in Singapore here. Growth team members presented two sessions at Wikimania Singapore.
  • After a 2.5 years-long collaboration with Bangala Wikipedia, we have decided to start a collaboration with another wiki. Swahili Wikipedia is now a pilot wiki for Growth experiments.

November Articles for creation backlog drive

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Impact Module

At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [23]

We released “add a link” to 35 more Wikipedias. [24] [25]

We have a few Wikipedias remaining:

  • German and English Wikipedia will be contacted at the beginning of January 2024.
  • There are a few small wikis that will not receive the task until they have enough articles for the algorithm to work properly.

Community Configuration

Mentorship

When a mentor marked themselves as "Away", they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [27]

We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [28]

We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [29]

It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [30]

Election news: The Guild needs coordinators! If you'd like to help out, you may nominate yourself or any suitable editor—with their permission—for the Election of Coordinators for the first half of 2024. Nominations will close at 23:59 on 15 December (UTC). Voting begins immediately after the close of nominations and closes at 23:59 on 31 December. All editors in good standing (not under current sanctions) are eligible, and self-nominations are welcome. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term that ends at 23:59 on 30 June.

Drive: Of the 69 editors who signed up for the September Backlog Elimination Drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 661,214 words in 290 articles. Barnstars awarded are listed here.

Blitz: Of the 22 editors who signed up for the October Copy Editing Blitz, 13 copy-edited at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 109,327 words in 52 articles. Barnstars awarded are listed here.
