Your report of edit warring

[edit]

Hello Mvcg66b3r. Your report about 50.200.90.234 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) may be closed with no action since it only mentions two edits at WHBQ-TV. Normally it takes four reverts in 24 hours to break the 3RR rule. It seems possible that the same IP has been reverting multiple articles. If that is so, perhaps you could expand your report to explain that. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 18:33, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Kyw-tv

[edit]

I just what you to know that David Rogers was a meteorologist at Kyw in Philadelphia. Ianandruby2002 (talk) 23:13, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

But it doesn't say that in the linked article. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 23:25, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Consistency

[edit]

There is actually no consistency in formatting of radio station or TV "branding" or "slogan" in the templates. Some use bold, some use italics, some use quote marks, some use combinations. But WP:MOS does not support any of these except for quote marks. See also this, which uses simple quotes for the branding. If we're going to have consistency it should be consistent with MOS. Jeh (talk) 03:16, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Then you would have to change every article. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 03:20, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, not at all. As for the current offenders, I've been working on that, but sometimes people keep reverting. Jeh (talk) 03:39, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please become familiar with the above-linked guideline, particularly item 1: "Individual scheduled or expected future events should be included only if the event is notable and almost certain to take place. " A channel change that is invisible to the viewers (due to virtual channel numbers) is not particularly notable and may well be subject to re-think. That WP:OTHERSTUFF exists is not a valid argument; those should be removed as well. Jeh (talk) 18:33, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Invisible"? Well, OTA viewers have to rescan once the channel change takes place. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 18:37, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
True but that's not a compelling point as far as the guideline is concerned. With rare exceptions we don't mention future events. There will be ample time to mention them after they happen. Jeh (talk) 18:52, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As I had said with the italics vs. quotes debate, you would have to make changes to every TV station article. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 18:54, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's another WP:OTHERSTUFF argument. And as before: no, not nearly every article, nor is that a reason to allow new violations to stand. Jeh (talk) 19:23, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Location parameter for Template:Infobox broadcast

[edit]

Sigh... I see from your edit history that KGO-TV is far from the only article on which you've changed the "Location" parameter value to what I guess is a service area or market.

The documentation for this infobox (see template:Infobox broadcast) is very explicit: The "Location" parameter is for, and I quote:

The name of the municipality in which the station's programming originates. That is, the primary studio and office location. This is opposed to the transmitter location which may be in a different community, and also opposed to regional "satellite" studios or facilities.

I see no way that your text, "San Francisco Bay Area", can be interpreted as a "municipality".

Wikipedia is supposed to be edited collaboratively. Accordingly, before making a large number of similar changes to a batch of related articles, please at try to achieve WP:CONSENSUS for your changes first. If you come upon a series of articles that, in your opinion, all seem to show the same mistake, it would be best if you'd ask if it really is a mistake! Or if you are misinterpreting how e.g. a particular template is meant to be used. In this case, Template talk:Infobox broadcast would be a good place to ask. Thank you for your understanding. Houston TV

[edit]

Thank you for your concerns about my recent edits. I would like to clear up some confusion that most There has been some confusion among the city= and location= lines in the infobox. The city= is meant for the City of License (COL) and the location= is the Nielsen Designated Market Area (DMA). The COL is often neglected on these pages and is an important piece of information to stakeholders in the broadcast industry due to longstanding regulatory framework. These should not be left blank for consistency, even if it is licensed to the main city in the market, as many markets are two (or sometimes three) principal city markets.

Also, I have placed the link to the Houston TV template (always buried in the bottom of the page) in the location= since it is more appropriate for the topic than a general link to the metro area (which can be reached in the infobox label(s). I appreciate your efforts on innovating the Houston TV articles and template better to eventually reach Featured Article (and perhaps Featured Template) status as a shining example to similar pages in other cities. Please reach out to me on my talk page if you have anymore concerns.SirChan (talk) 04:47, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Today, I have brought the issue up in the template talk page. Can I count on your support for fixing the parameters to allow a DMA/MSA in the infobox? SirChan (talk) 03:22, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@SirChan: "Location is for the Nielsen DMA" - well, that's not what template:infobox broadcast says. The doc says that the "location" is for the municipality where the station's primary studio(s) are. A market area like "San Francisco Bay Area" is not a "municipality". And your last graf suggests that you already know this, because you're trying to "fix the parameters" to allow a DMA/MSA - if "location" was already for the DMA then no "fix" would be necessary.
Has there been consensus somewhere to use the "location" field for something else? And if so, why was the template documentation not changed accordingly? If not, "Location" should remain as documented and a new parameter added. Mind you, I agree that a "market" parameter is a good idea. Maybe it should even be prominently displayed where the "Location" is now. But making changes to existing articles that are contrary to the template doc (which has WP:CONSENSUS) is not the way to go about that. Jeh (talk) 16:37, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

C&P of others' talk page comments

[edit]

Please do not copy and paste others' talk page comments from one TP to another, as you did with this edit where you copied my comments from the above section.

A talk page is supposed to show a record of discussion. Your C&P resulted in an apparent contribution to the target page from me, but one which I did not in fact make and which does not appear in the page's edit history. To put it bluntly, if I'd wanted those exact words on that page, I'd have put them there.

If you want to start a discussion on a talk page, please use your own words. Within such words, the best way to refer to another person's comments on another page is with a link to a diff showing those comments (as I did in the first graf here). An advantage of a link to a diff is that it will always show the referred-to text as it was at the time you created the diff link; it will not reflect further edits to or even deletions of the text.

I realize that you are a fairly new editor and very eager to do a lot of work here. But try to remember that WP is edited collaboratively and an awful lot of collaboration had already happened before you started. It's even possible that in some cases that process already produced correct results. Jeh (talk) 23:33, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at User talk:Akandkur, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Tarl N. (discuss) 04:12, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have been warned about this before (about a week ago, here). I probably should have made this a level-2 or level-3 warning. DON'T do that. Tarl N. (discuss) 04:14, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. I do apologize. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 04:16, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
